Socket Communications in conjunction with Microsoft® has announced that the Microsoft® Communications Kit for the Windows® CE operating system is available immediately for distribution with the Battery Friendly® Digital Phone Card Data Connection Kit from Socket. With this hardware and software combination, people can unite a Windows CE-based Palm-size PC or Handheld PC with a data-capable cell phone and easily access e-mail, browse rich Internet content in color and synchronize personal information while on the go.

Socket Communications also announced that their Digital Phone Cards are now available for GSM Phones in Europe and that together with SanDisk Corporation they have made a cooperative arrangement to bring to market Socket's patent-pending technology for combining I/O connectivity plus removable memory onto plug-in cards designed to fit in the expansion slots of Windows CE operating system-based PC Companions as well as other mobile computers and intelligent appliances.

ParaGraph has released a SDK called NetCalif™ which enables OEMs and service providers to deliver remotely to web enabled thin client devices (including Windows CE devices) natural handwriting capability. Based on ParaGraph's popular CaliGrapher® handwriting recognition software the SDK includes: NetCalif server for Windows NT, working through HTTP gateway, firewall transparent connection protocol, Developer's Guide and a sample JavaPad source code application. Franklin has announced that The Handbook of Adverse Drug Interactions (HADI) will now be available to users of CE devices (as well as Palm and Psion users also). The natural follower to the Physicians Desk Reference PDR already announced by Franklin, HADI will provide doctors and nurses who use mobile computing devices as life-saving resources even more authoritative drug information.

Microsoft has released a Market Bulletin to compare Handsprings new Springboard concept with already existing Window CE devices software capability and compactflash card strategy. Main points being that the expand your devices capability strategy has all along been Microsoft's with their encouragement of 3rd party software development. Also that compactflash card slots are in all PPCs and many HPCs, are smaller, and offer more variety because of the industry support for them as a standardized product with different functions and that they work with other devices as well -ie. notebooks.

Microsoft has started its "Web On the Go" promotion campaign. People who purchase a color Palm-size PC before Jan 1. 2000 will receive for an additional US$49 a special "Web On the Go" kit. The kit includes Xircom's new CompactCard Modem 56 GlobalACCESS, special deals on wireless add-ons and ISP access, and over 10 mobile software applications including Microsoft ActiveSync® 3.0 and the Microsoft Communication Kit which has a dial up Wizard for simplified internet access.

HP has announced their latest Handheld PC the Jornada 690. In color with 32MB of RAM HP appears to be trying to market the product more directly towards vertical solutions playing up the increased RAM as the necessary storage space for healthcare and database specific applications. The 690 comes with a built-in 56Kbps v.90 modem, 8 hrs of battery life and a 133MHz processor. The HP Jornada 690 is expected to be available at the end of November and will retail at approximately US$999.00.
