Socketcom has announced shipments in the US of their Digital Phone Card Data Connection Kit. Socketcom describes their Digital Phone Cards as an energy-efficient plug-in card that offers universal connectivity between a data-capable PCS phone and any mobile computer powered by Microsoft's Windows CE, Windows 9x or Windows NT operating systems. Essentially they can turn your Palm-size PC or HPC into a wireless modem allowing for Internet access, email capability and network connectivity. The Digital Phone Card comes in a CompactFlash Type I form factor and can be used in areas with access to Sprint's nationwide data service.

Microsoft and British Telecommunications PLC have announced a
worldwide agreement to develop new Internet services and products that will enable consumers to access rich, interactive content on a wide variety of new and existing mobile devices. The companies' plans include developing a mobile, multimedia-enabled portal based on the Microsoft MSN™ Mobile service and building a new generation of wireless handsets based on the Microsoft® Windows® CE operating system that will enable access to new multimedia content and games and other services.

DESkey have announced CompactFlash card dongles that enable developers to protect their Windows CE based software from unauthorized use as well providing the means to encrypt/decrypt data within an application.

LEOSync the new division of LEO Systems, Inc. has announced the release of their new
Freestyle e-Color Palm-size PC -Chinese edition. The e-Color is expected to sell well particularly in the Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets where the LEO Freestyle Executive Palm-size PC last year paved the way for Win CE using a Chinese version of the operating system. The Chinese version of Win CE has the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser thus the e-Color gives Chinese speaking professionals the opportunity to take advantage of a color screen portable device in the Palm-size PC form factor and surf the web in color.

Socket Communications Inc. today announced the first shipments of the
Socket® In-Hand Scan Card, a matchbook-size plug-in card with an integrated laser scanner that makes it easy to add bar code scanning capability to Palm-size PCs, Handheld PCs and pen tablets powered by Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. The In-Hand Scan Card features a new low-power laser scanner engine from Symbol Technologies that is the smallest, lightest and brightest scan engine available today. With Palm-size PCs from Casio, Compaq and Hewlett Packard, users can select any programmable control button on the Windows CE device to trigger the laser scanner, making it possible to scan bar codes with one hand. Applications for the In-Hand Scan Card include asset accounting, inventory management, shipping/receiving, patient tracking, clinical control, route delivery, field inspection, market research, and other mobile data collection activities that can benefit from single-handed operation and point-of-capture computing.

Applian Technologies has announced a new upgrade to its CoolCalc application, a fully programmable calculator for Windows CE. New features include an interest rate converter, a Weight Watchers "points" calculator, and a metric converter – making a total of 14 total now available. The upgrade also has more flexible menu management, more numeric display options, and improved font and color support for custom calculators. Puma Technology, Inc. announced today that it will launch a free Internet-based synchronization service scheduled to debut in the first quarter of 2000. Socket Communications, Inc. today reported that it completed a private placement equity financing of approximately $1,011,000 consisting of approximately 936,000 shares of common stock at $1.08 per share and three-year warrants to acquire an additional 140,000 shares of common stock at the same price. The net proceeds from the financing will increase the Company's working capital to finance its operations and anticipated growth.

"This financing provides additional working capital to support the introduction and sale of Socket's newest Windows-CE based connection products, including its recently announced digital phone cards for the North American CDMA and worldwide GSM markets, and its newest bar code scanner, the In-Hand Scan Card," said Chief Financial Officer David Dunlap. "These products are expected to begin volume shipments in October.

Boundless Technologies has announced that its Caprio line of Windows CE terminals has been accepted by the University of Massachusetts. Featuring the Cyrix MediaGX CPU operating at 180MHz, the Capio is designed to outperform other thin-client units on the market, and weighs less than five pounds. It supports both Microsoft RDP and Citrix® ICA® protocols, which can run concurrently in multiple sessions. Optional configurations include local text terminal emulators for legacy and UNIX system access.

CNet reports that Philips will discontinue its Windows CE based Nino Palm-size PC product line. Philips claims the market size has not matured fast enough and was never as big as they anticipated. Visit CNet for the full details.

Z4Soft has released an updated version of PTab, a fully-functional spreadsheet program for Palm-size PCs that is compatible with Microsoft Excel. New features in Version 1.1 include date/time support, insert/delete rows/columns, CSV import, and copy/paste text to/from other applications via clipboard. PTab can be downloaded for $40 from the Z4Soft website; a thirty-day trial version is also available.

new mobile computer families based on the Microsoft Windows CE operating system for a wide variety of enterprise and government mobile computing applications, such as logistics, parcel and post, retail, warehousing, and data collection and data management.

Puma Technology has announced the launch of Intellisync Version 3.6 software for Palm Computing platform and Windows CE devices, featuring support for Novell GroupWise 5.5.2 email synchronization.
