News -Sept. 18/99 CNet reports that Compaq is unveiling its new Aero 1530 Palm-size PC on Monday in an attempt to draw business from rival Palm Computing's ultra-sleek Palm V. It is the smallest handheld device running on Windows CE software, the lighter sibling to Microsoft's desktop PC operating systems. iambic Software has released Expense Director] for the Palm-size PC, together with a major upgrade of the same product for the Palm platform. It provides Windows CE users with an essential tool for recording expenses for a broad range of purposes. The application can be downloaded from the iambic Software website for US$29.95. Advance Systems Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Extended Systems Inc. has announced that a new version of its ASL-Connect management and synchronization server solution for Windows CE and Palm computing devices has been released and is now shipping. The 2.2 version supports IBM's DB2 Everywhere 1.1 (DB2E) handheld relational database and Microsoft's ActiveX Data Object (ADO) interface. News -Sept. 17/99 On The Go Software, Inc., makers of Quicken ExpensAble, today announced it has begun shipping Pocket Quicken® for Windows CE. Pocket Quicken for Windows CE was developed in cooperation with Intuit to be used in conjunction with Quicken Deluxe 99 and Quicken Deluxe 2000 to track finances while traveling or away from the PC. Users can now capture checking, credit card and cash transactions while on the go and gain freedom and mobility utilizing Pocket Quicken. The program can be downloaded from On the Go Software's website for US$49.95. Developer One, Inc. has released AutoGraph 1.5, which enables you to graph your Pocket Excel data on your Handheld or Handheld PC Pro device. The application supports seven different graph types, automatic range zooming, axis scaling and more. It can be downloaded from the Developer One website for $34.95. HP not to be outdone by the announcements by Handspring and 3Com this week will also be releasing in October their Jornada 430se -a direct challenger to Casio's E-100 palm-size PC. Featuring a color screen, 65,000 colors, 133MHz of processing power, and MP3 digital audio software with a stereo headphone jack, HP plans to get their piece of the pie of an increasingly multi-media appreciative PDA market that Casio has been dominating thus far. News -Sept. 16/99 Casio has announced the introduction of a digital camera card for use with its Cassiopeia E-100 and E-105 color Palm-size PCs. This new Digital Camera Card will be available in the fourth quarter at a suggested retail price of $299. Clarinet Systems Inc. has unveiled its EthIR WAN access system designed to link notebook, handheld and Palm-size PCs to the Internet or corporate network, via their built-in infrared (IR) ports, eliminating the need for cards, wires or third-party software. News -Sept. 14/99 SoftWinter, Inc. has released a Windows CE version of its transparent encryption product, Sentry 2020 which uses strong encryption algorithms that allow you to protect confidential files on your Windows CE device. Proxim, HP, and Odyssey Software, have announced a co-marketing initiative to provide a single-solution JumpStart developers toolkit that offers companies low-cost, real-time mobile access to enterprise information via the ultra-portable HP Jornada 680 Handheld PC Professional device. Using the toolkit, in-house or commercial developers and solution providers can quickly and easily build mobile, real-time wireless applications with best-of-breed components, including the Jornada 680(TM), such as real-time access to electronic patient records and streamlining recording procedures and diagnosis to help automate patient billing. News -Sept. 13/99 Pentax® Technologies Corporation has introduced the PocketJet® 200 portable printer -- a compact, 1.1 pound printer compatible with Windows-based devices, including those using the Windows CE platform. The PocketJet 200 prints 200-dpi text and graphics at speeds up to three pages per minute. The printer is ideal for sales force automation, enterprise solutions or any other situation when a quick hard-copy print out is needed. Palmtop Software has announced the Millenium Edition of its popular route planning software. Available for both Symbian EPOC and Microsoft Windows CE, Route Planner enables users to map directions on the move. Improvements have been made to its speed, GPS interface capabilities and software features. Users of colour HPCs and Palm-size PCs may take advantage of a variety of colour schemes, tailored to match the mapping conventions of the country they are travelling in.
