Industry Insider Report for: Physix, Incorporated More and more healthcare professionals demand mobility. The need for access to information anywhere that they provide care is paramount. Windows CE provides this mobility and anytime, anywhere performance unlike any other computing platform. To be sure, Windows CE is making a significant impact on healthcare. Physix has been developing software for handheld computers since its inception. When Microsoft began development of the Windows CE platform, they also saw the potential for the operating system to solve real needs in healthcare, and they saw Physix as the leader in handheld healthcare software. So, naturally, they asked Physix to consider developing software for this new OS so as to launch at the same time. Since then, Physix has built it's user base, now at over 3,500 physicians and healthcare providers, into the largest group of users for any handheld medical software. The product, designed by physicians, is a stand-alone electronic medical record (EMR) system. Known as PocketChart, it helps physicians and other providers to fully document their patient encounters, to access past medical histories and charts, and to utilize a full pharmaceutical library and write prescriptions, all while at the point of care. Using the customizable menu system within PocketChart, physicians of virtually any specialty can point and tap on the various patient responses or exam findings; and behind the scenes, the program puts it all together into a chart note. The notes can be printed out and stored in the patient chart and can be saved on the handheld unit and reviewed for subsequent visits. Physicians can reference a 1200-drug pharmaceutical library and can easily write prescriptions which are also stored in the patient's record. The program provides billing code reference lists and a patient summary screen. Physix is also developing a Windows CE client for its Compendia client/server networked EMR and coding compliance system. With Compendia, physicians will use the handheld computers on a wireless local area network. The thin operating system and long-lasting battery life make the Windows CE an ideal option for the Compendia system. Physicians can take the units off-line away from their offices and continue to use the functional software. Again, the mobility and durability of Windows CE are key factors in Physix's decision to use it for Compendia. The Windows CE platform has grown in popularity and with new and improving hardware, it's on the verge of explosion within the healthcare industry. The access to information is so important within this industry, and this access is required wherever patient care is offered. We are already starting to see its use increase substantially, and the increase is sure to continue.
