The Industry Insider's Report |
Industry Insider Report for: Spyglass Spyglass is a pioneer in providing Internet solutions for the non-PC market. When Microsoft needed to answer the call of the burgeoning wireless device market for a reliable platform, Spyglass immediately began to familiarize itself with the Windows CE OS. In the past two years Microsoft has brought Windows CE to numerous classes of devices, including clamshell and palm computers, automobiles, industrial control systems, and set-top boxes. In addition, licensees for Windows CE are bringing the platform to still other markets, including industrial control and point-of-sale applications. Recognizing the growth potential there would be in creating software and solutions to work with Windows CE, Spyglass made several moves to tap into the Windows CE market in 1998 by becoming a member of the systems integrator program for Windows CE. Soon after joining Microsoft's systems integrator program for Windows CE, Spyglass began developing more technology, including a Windows CE version of their leading Spyglass Device Mosaic Web browser. Spyglass offers the Windows CE port of its Web browser to bridge the gap for hardware running Embedded CE, the variant of Windows CE targeted for non-handheld devices, so as to allow Internet browsing capability for a wide range of wireless devices. Also in 1998, Spyglass professional services began offering custom Windows CE application development. Last April this service became easier to master because Spyglass acquired Navitel Communications Inc., a privately-held Menlo Park, Calif. developer of a Microsoft Windows CE-based software and applications platform for Internet-enabled telephones. Navitel's extensive experience in providing Windows CE-based solutions for devices is a natural extension of Spyglass' current solutions practice for Windows CE. With the Navitel acquisition, Spyglass gained significant expertise in developing Internet-enabling software and applications running on the Windows CE platform. Overall, the Navitel acquisition enhanced Spyglass' ability to leverage the success of Windows CE as one of the leading Internet device platforms. Also in April and in another significant move to partner Windows CE technology and Spyglass' Internet expertise, Spyglass secured a $20 million multi-year agreement with Microsoft. The strategic agreement includes Spyglass' licensing technology and providing services to Microsoft that will help to accelerate the development and deployment of Windows CE-based products. Spyglass will work directly with Microsoft to develop and integrate multiple Windows CE-based applications for Internet device manufacturers that are developing products utilizing the Windows CE operating system. The partnership is still in its early stages but will certainly enable the development of a broad variety of products and services for intelligent connected appliances.
