Here is a list of the Top Ten software applications that I have loaded onto my color Palm-size PC and what I use them to do. Both my color Palm-size PC's memory and my patience are limited, so this list may change from time to time as I delete evaluation programs I don't like and replace them with new ones that I find more interesting. The software I have selected and the comments I have made about it are totally subjective.
The Top 10 as they stand at this time...

AvantGo.com Off-Line Browser
Comments... |
Ignore the Mobile Channels application if you want to view news and information downloaded from the Internet and use the Avanto.com browser instead! I use it to download the latest news and information from the Avantgo.com home page for me to view later at my leisure. With its City Snapshots channel, Avantgo.com is also great for organizing business trips and impressing your clients by choosing the best restaurants in their locality.

ParaGraph CalliGrapher 5.3
Comments... |
I'll admit it. JOT, the handwriting recognition program that is included with Windows CE, is a pretty good application. But it does have its drawbacks, most notably its inability to recognize cursive text, which prevents you from being able to quickly scribble notes down when you are in a hurry. I am a complete convert to Calligrapher, which recognizes about 95% of my almost illegible writing and also comes with some neat additional features like a spell checker and vocabulary editor. You do have to go through a short learning curve with Calligrapher (there is an excellent tutorial posted on the Calligrapher Home Page), but once you get up to speed you'll never look back! JOT or, heaven forbid, Graffiti just don't stack up!

Foliage Software Systems iBrowser
Comments... |
Initially, I didn't think it would be necessary to install an Internet browser on my color Palm-size PC , but following a recommendation from a friend I decided to try out iBrowser and I haven't looked back since! iBrowser was fast and easy to download and install, and does an excellent job of formatting the content on web pages to fit onto the limited real estate provided by my devices small 240x320 screen. Now, if I'm going on a short one- or two-day business trip I have the luxury of really travelling light by leaving my HP Jornada 680 behind and just relying on my color Palm-size PC for my email and web browsing requirements.

Applian QuickWallet
Comments... |
The Pocket Outlook Contacts application is fine for saving basic contacts data but it's not so great if you want to store confidential credit card and passport information. For this, I use Applian's QuickWallet, which combines a highly user-friendly interface with password protection capabilities. QuickWallet also lets you store audio files and even color photos, though I haven't used these features yet.

Microsoft Pocket Streets
Comments... |
I use Microsoft Pocket Streets whenever I need to prepare directions for business trips to the US. Pocket Streets is easy to install, delivers stunning color map images, and has powerful search capabilities. Pocket Streets can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft Windows CE home page, but you need to have Expedia Streets and Trips 2000, MapPoint 2000, or AutoRoute Express Great Britain 2000 installed on your PC to take full advantage of it.

BSQUARE SpreadSheet
Comments... |
Even though I don't do a lot of heavy number crunching on my color Palm-size PC, I find BSQUARE SpreadSheet a very useful application for tasks like updating sales forecasts, recording pricing information on market research visits to stores, and even writing down shopping lists. BSQUARE Spreadsheet is fully compatible with Excel and supports over 50 mathematical, statistical and financial functions.

Pocket Explorer

If you're anything like me, you write lots of short notes and reminders using Note Taker on your color Palm-size PC, and then when you need to find some information you forget which file you wrote it in! Palm Explorer is just like Windows Explorer on your PC. It lets you organize your files into folders and with its easy to navigate interface enables you to quickly locate the document you are looking for. You can also create new folders with Pocket Explorer and rename and delete files. This is a must-have utility for the power Palm-size PC user!

BSQUARE bTASK
Comments... |
bTASK is a very useful utility that came free with my color Palm-size PC. It tells you which applications are running on your device and allows you to close them (something you can't do using Windows CE). In addition, bTASK lets keep track of vital device information, including the main and backup battery status and the amount of storage space that is remaining. bTASK is available as a stand-alone application or as part of bPRODUCTIVE and bUSEFUL suites.

Audible
Comments... |
Since this application came free with my device, I thought I'd give it a try -- but so far the jury is still out on it. Yes, I do like being able to listen to audio books and news articles on my color Palm-size PC. But no, I don't like having to wait for ages while I download the files from the Audible website. It's at times like these when I really wish I had a cable modem or ADSL connection!

Image Expert CE
Comments... |
Although I prefer the eloquence of words to the power of pictures, I decided to load the free trial version of this application that was shipped with my color Palm-size PC. With Image Expert CE you can view JPEG or BMP images from a digital camera on your Palm-size PC -- without having to hook your device up to your PC. You can also annotate the images with voice, ink, or text, share them via email and IrDA, and create slide shows for viewing on a CE device or external monitor. At US$49.95 this software is pretty expensive, however, and - for me at least - I'm not sure that it's worth it. So when the trial period runs out, its chances of survival are limited.
