Setting Up Your Own Mobile Channel. Day 2 -Building Your Channel.

Well hopefully you have collected and installed everything discussed in Day 1's "-Getting Prepared" tutorial, if not click here to review. Now using your mastery of html and your creative genius its time to present your content.

There are several important things to bear in mind when developing/designing your channel using Avantgo.

  • With notable exceptions (discussed later) Avantgo channels support HTML 3.2 standard tags.*
  • You need to put between the HEAD tags this META tag -
  • Most CE devices have small screens with Palm-size PCs only having a screen size of 320x240. So if you expect your content to be viewed on a device as small as a Palm-size PC than you'd better make sure your content fits in a space even smaller than that to accommodate the scroll bars and headers on the screens (approximately 260x225).
  • Avantgo does not support Frames. They plan to in the future.
  • Minimize your use of images… to save valuable file space, screen space and to maximize info content. Make sure your images are scaled down to the correct size before they are put into your html code as the width and height attributes won't work.
  • Plan your channels hierarchy carefully in advance. Put the important links to more detailed information 1st and let people go deeper to the information that suits them. Also as a general rule of thumb, don't make your information much more than three screens long on one page (when scrolling down).
* Avantgo has an excellent "Style Guide" with complete design details and also a comprehensive list of HTML tags NOT supported. You can find it here:

Now go out and create a sample page that you can use to publish as part of the AvantGo's partner program. We'll go into publication details on Day 3 of Setting Up Your own Mobile Channel.

NOTE: Due to national holidays Day 3 of Setting Up Your Own Mobile Channel will take place on Monday June 21st.
