What kind of mapping and route-planning software applications are available for Windows CE Palm-size and Handheld PCs?
One the most popular Windows CE mapping applications is Microsoft Pocket Streets, which is available as a free download from the Microsoft Windows CE website. Designed for use with Microsoft Expedia Streets & Trips 2000, Microsoft MapPoint 2000, Microsoft AutoRoute Express Great Britain 2000, Pocket Streets lets you download city maps and customized road and street routes to your Palm-size PC. Once the maps are installed on your device, the program lets you view them in varying styles and levels of detail and also allows you to search for street names and places.
Another common program is HandMap, a vector-based map viewer for Handheld and Palm-size PCs. With suitable map modules it allows you to search for streets or landmarks, plan routes, and create custom markers.
If you have a Palm-size PC, you could also try out the Pocket MapBlast service offered at http://www.mapblast.com. After clicking the "Pocket MapBlast Home" button, you will be asked what kind of palm computer you own; simply click Windows CE and follow the instructions. MapBlast offers a huge variety of both US and international maps, which look very good on a color Palm-size PC screen. To view the maps, you'll need to download some software called PalmPICS and a shareware Windows screen capture utility called HyperSnap. These programs are both available on the MapBlast home page.
