This is where your host, Doug, answers the most common questions.
Feel free to email me if you have a question not on this page.
What's with the format?
Titles can't be copyrighted, so there can be more than one film or TV show with the same title. Parentheses after a title provide more information so you know which film or TV show I'm referring to. Some TV show titles are so common that I've identified the country of origin. All to serve your informational needs.
Why do you do this?
Turns out I’m a masochist.
Actually, I was trying to find information about a dog in some film and I couldn’t find it, so I started this web page for others seeking similar information. I'm as surprised as anyone that there are so many films and TV shows with dogs in them.
Why dogs?
I'm a dog guy. I've had cats all my life, too, but I prefer dogs. You'll find notes about other animal actors (cats, horses, bears, birds, etc.) scattered throughout the "Comments" columns.
Why do you link to the AKC and not another breed organization?
Inertia. When I first started, the AKC had the user-friendliest site. It still does. I do link to other organizations, such as the UKC or ARBA, when a breed isn't recognized by the AKC.
Why not a site about movie horses?
Great idea! I encourage you to make one.
Here's some trivia to get you started: three horses have their hoof prints immortalized in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre - Tom Mix's Tony, Roy Roger's Trigger and Gene Autry's Champion.
Why don't you list TV commercials, music videos or cartoons?
Just to keep it simple. Adding commercials and videos would be orders of magnitude more difficult simply because of the volume and the lack of information out there. That said, I do mention commercials if a dog is best known for them (like the Taco Bell Chihuahuas).
As far as cartoon or animated dogs, there are other sites that list them, so I figured that area was covered.
Where do you get your information?
Show business professionals (dog handlers, trainers and owners; producers, directors and writers), as well as from knowledgeable amateur film buffs. Also regular folks who've seen a dog in a movie or TV show and brought it to my attention. Their names are listed in the Contributors section.
A number of books and magazines have been valuable sources of information, the list available in the Bibliography section.
There are also many dog-centric websites that have snippets of moviedog information; I’ve concatenated those here. Some still exist while others have disappeared into the mists of time due to the vagaries of the Internet. I plan to create a Website section to list those yet extant.
Also, I watch a lot of movies.
Which breed is most popular/common as actors?
German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs), aka Alsatians. Although there haven't been any recent GSD superstars as in the past (Strongheart, Rin Tin Tin), they are used as visual shorthand for guard dogs and police dogs. Nothing says, "The Feds are here" like a GSD.
Can you recommend a trainer/handler for my film?
I'm sorry, but I can't. Although I've struck up e-mail friendships with trainers and owners all over the world, I'm not in the dog-training business and don't feel comfortable recommending people.
May I link to your website?
Absolutely.
Is it as much work as it seems?
More. I started this sometime in 1996 and have put hundreds if not thousands of hours into researching information, building and updating the site.
How much money do you make from this site?
Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Bupkiss. This is totally a hobby. Feel free to send me money or to hire me at a lucrative hourly rate with full benefits, including health, dental, 401(k) and Smarties.
Mostly I do this for the love of it, and I do it for you. (But you can still send money.)
Do you have dogs?
Yep. Have a look.
How tall are you?
I go all the way up.
