Typefaces from the early 20th Century which placed form over function.
These fonts have a nationality flavor.
These fonts date back to the late mediaeval period. and are a Sans Serif type of font. They were designed for hand printing before the invention of the printing press. Gothic fonts became so popular that they eventually replaced other hand-written styles of lettering such as Uncials. Type used in the first printing presses were modeled on these fonts.
The derogatory name arose after the Renaissance age in Europe. . In Europe these fonts are often called Grotesque Fonts. At that time, people assumed anything from the Middle Ages to be barbaric or Goth-like. I guess Goths weren't considered cool!
Using these fonts will add a personal touch even if they are not your own handwriting.
