Calibrating
Your System - A tutorial for calibrating your monitor and your desktop
printer for consistent output of digital graphic files.
Copy a GIF or JPEG from my GIF
Art Studio to your Own Computer
- These instructions assume that you are using Netscape Navigator or
the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Other browsers are similiar.
- Right click on the image with your mouse.
- Choose File-Save Image As from your menu bar.
- Save a copy to your local hard drive.
- Note: I suggest you save the image to your local drive with a meaningful
name. I have given the images code names to make them easy for me to catalog
and keep track of. The following image is called buwd1.gif. I suggest
that you name it wowbulet.gif. That will make it easier for you
to know what the file is.
Naming Files in your Web Pages
- When giving a file a name, be sure to use only 8 letters or numbers,
the underline ( _ ) symbol, or the dash (- ) symbol. Many operating systems
cannot read long file names.
- Follow these 8 characters with a dot ( . ) and the 3 or 4 character
identifier.
- You can use .html, but it is safer when naming a JPEG file to
use only .jpg.
- Be sure to use only lower case letters or uppercase letters iin your
file names. Then you don't have to worry about which letters were capitalized
and which weren't. Many servers are case sensitive. If you name
a file Index.html and then establish a link calling it index.html, some
of your users who log onto your page might not be able to link up. Unix
machines are case sensitive for example.
- It is better to be safe than sorry after all.
Testing your Web Pages for Broken Links
- Have you ever uploaded pages, logged on and everything worked perfectly?
Then you started getting messages from people that several of your graphics
had broken boxes showing up as broken links. On your own computer they
appear to be good links because they are actually pointing back to your
own hard drive and are finding them there.
- There is an easy way to spot these broken links on-line.
- Upload your pages and graphics.
- Log off from the web.
- Open up your File Manager and rename the top of your web site folder
or directory by adding an x to the end of the name.
- Log onto your web site. Now you will see the same broken links as everyone
else sees.
- If the link connects to one of your other pages and points back to
the version on your own hard drive, you will get an error message when
you activate that link.
- If you only have a few broken links, you can easily change them by
hand.
- If you have a large number of broken links, there is an easier way
to correct this.
- Log off the internet.
- Open your word processor.
- Find the first broken link by hand and edit copy what needs to be changed
leaving only the actual html document name.
- Example:
- Your link reads "..Version1/test.html"
- It should read "http://www.oocities.org/SoHo/7343/test.html:
- Edit copy ..Version1
- Open your find and replace feature of your word processor
- Edit paste ..Version1 into the Find box
- Enter http://www.oocities.org/SoHo/7343 in the Replace Box
- Now a few simple mouse clicks will replace all of the defective code
with the proper code. Save the document. Replace the next document errors
until you have completed all of your pages.
- Close your word processor.
- Rename you website folder by removing the letter x from the end. You
must do this before you upload your new pages or more errors
may sneak in.
- Log onto the internet, upload your files and repeat the original instructions
to do a final rechecking of your pages.
- You will now have a site that is free of broken links and graphics.
