Thousands wasted every year...
At ten o'clock I received
a fax from MIMOS inviting me to Netpreneurs Meeting at 5pm.Immediately,
I told my secretary to cancel all my prior engagements. It is not an everyday
affair to get invited to have high tea with Captain Kirk (aka Tengku Azzman,CEO
of MIMOS) on his Starship Enterprise(aka MIMOS office). This is a meeting
I won't miss for anything. It is where we discuss ideas and business of
the future. An hour with a wise man is worth more than a thousand years
with a fool...
Everyone was talking about their business of making money using IT except Mr Fauzi. He told us how he already spent RM 1.0 million to build up a college to teach IT to bumiputra students in his hometown in Pahang. All of them could not afford to pay the fees because they come from poor families. The banks can't disperse any loans because their parents are not qualified to be their guarantors. However ,these students are those who scored grade one in their SPM(O-level) examination last year. They are the rejected thousands who could not get into IPTA (govt. instituitions of higher learning) nor can afford to attend IPTS( private sectors instituitions of higher learning). In Pahang alone, there are almost 4,000 last year. Most of them went to work in the factories. Mr Fauzi was very sad and upset over the issue. What a waste, according to him.
Another issue that really hit us was that the money to build the college for bumiputra was given by a Malaysian chinese tycoon. When Mr Fauzi wanted to close down the college because he needed money to pay the lecturers, the Malaysian Chinese tycoon told him not to.Instead he was given more money to continue the operation of the college.
When I asked him whether he recieved any donations from bumiputra tycoons/businessmen he replied NO!Honestly, I felt so ashamed listening to his great effort to help the young people in his hometown that I almost got up and leave the room.
Saya malu.
