Eating...A New way of Thinking!
Eating....oh what an experience it is!!!
In Korea there are many new things to experience, but the biggest and the hardest is dealing with the food!! When I was back home in the states I would eat a lot of bland meat and potato dishes, but that is totally different from what you will find in Korea. Korea is known for Kimchi...which is a very hot, sour sidedish. Kimchi is served for breakfast lunch and dinner here. In the beginning I hated Kimchi, but honestly it does grow on you. I have now learned to not only enjoy it, but appreciate the flavor of it. The other little fact about Korean food is that most of it is very spicy, and has lots of seafood. I neither enjoy spicey food nor seafood, but I am learning to at least tolerate it. . SO here is my problem..what do I eat (oh and I can't cook!!)??? Well there are actually many foods that are enjoyable for those of us in the bland tastebud family. My favorite dish is Bokumbap...it is a dish that I affectionately call "egg on top" This dish is fried rice, mixed with vegetables, and a fried egg on top, henceforth the name! I also enjoy many of the blander types of soups, and usually anything that has rice in it. Kalbitang is very good. It is a beef soup with clear noodles, rice and vegetables. Fried or steamed mandoo (potstickers for those of us from the states) are more of my favorites. My friends and I often eat Samgyupsal, which is pork fried at the table, wrapped in leaves with rice and sidedishes. Bulgogi (marinated beef) is another of my favorites. As time goes by, I have learned to enjoy and appreciate Korean food. If you try it and stick to it...you will be amazed at how much you may enjoy the food here. Also Korean food is hot..but you do actually get used to it! If you like real Mexican food then you will probably be ok...it is just as spicy! If you begin to feel that Korean food is just not for you...don't despair there is a McDonald's. In Ulsan they also have a KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken), Melly's and many pizza places (just beware of corn on all kinds of pizza!) . I have also found a Baskin Robins, and a very nice italian resturaunt (the chief studied in Italy!!). And new western style restaurants are popping up everyday. SO don't despair. And if none of this sounds good...then just head on over to Pusan (about 45 minutes away by bus). Pusan has a larger western population, and it is the second largest city next to seoul...so you can find just about any kind of food there. I the beginning I thought that I would never survive, but with a little patience, and a lot of experimenting, you may come to find out that you really like Korean food....and remember it is extremely healthy. Most Korean food is all vegetables and a bit of meat, so it is possible to enjoy the food and be healthy. Also one side note about Chopsticks!! They are really not that bad, and if you just can't get the hang of the silverware chopsticks, then just ask for some wood ones (they are a whole lot easier!). |
