MOUNTAIN SPIRIT DANCE

Apache history tells of mountain spirits that live high in a sacred mountain and that they descend at specified times to bless the people and heal the sick.

Apache medicine men perform this ceremony known as the Mountain Spirit Dance, or Crown Dance. The spirits are accompanied by a clown who exaggerates and mimics the movements of the spirits.

This is one dance of the San Carlos Apache in Arizona.
