I like to plant in raised beds with wide rows so I can get my wheel barrow down the paths. Since the entire area is heavy red clay, the soil will have to be ammended with compost, well dried manure and top soil. I'll cover the paths with a thick layer of newspapers with grass clippings 3 to 4 inches deep over top of the papers.
The stone wall surrounding the garden will be set with spaces between the stones for plants such as Hens and Chicks, Purple Wintercreeper, Dragon's Blood Sedum, Canadian Ginger and Hardy Verbena. Marigolds will be planted all around the outside of the walls, with crushed egg shells under the Marigolds to keep the slugs out. A sheer netting can be placed over the entire garden that allows sun in and keeps critters out.
To the rear of the herb garden will be a large trellis with dipper & birdhouse gourds.
Here's a draft of what I'm planning for my Veggie garden
