Radio 1's exclusive BOYZONE concert 3/11/98
After a very boring 4 ½ hour train journey, Mum and I dropped off our
bags at our B+B and made our way to Broadcasting House, where we were to pick up
my ticket. We grabbed a bite to eat and went to see where we were to queue to
get in. It was only 4.30, 1 ½ hours before the doors opened, but already
there were around 60 peeps queuing in the freezing rain, apparently some of them
had been there since about 10.00 that morning!!!! Mum used to work at
Broadcasting House so she knew where BZ were gonna be entering the building so
we went round there to wait. Just after 5 o'clock three cars pulled up. Barry
Knight jumped out and told us all to move back (there were less than a dozen of
us!). Keith got out first and posed for one piccie (not mine unfortunately!)
whilst Ro and Steo made a sneaky entrance out of their car. A minute later
Shanno and Mikey hopped out and walked right past us all, looking completely
spaced out!!! Ro called back to us "We'll see ya's later girls!" Too
right you will, Ro!!! Nothing much happened after that until we were allowed
to get into the radio theatre. I got in just after six and found a seat in the
6th row, directly in line with Keith! Around 6.50, Zoe Ball came on stage and
she looked as excited as the fans in the audience!! Within minutes we were on
air and Zoe was introducing BOYZONE!!!!! The Boyz bounded onstage, wearing all
black, except Ro, who had on a white tee under his shirt, and launched into "Must
Have Been High" and then "One Kiss at a Time". Then Ro welcomed
us all and said he hoped we'd have a great evening, before introducing "Baby
Can I Hold You"during which Steo waved at me and pointed at my BZ scarf.
After that was over, Steo talked to us, sorry, I don't know what he said, I
couldn't make it out for all the screaming!!! He and Shane seemd to be sharing a
private joke cos they kept looking at each other and trying v. v. hard not to
laugh! "All That I Need" came next and then Steve was left on stage
for his solo "Where Did You Go?". All through it he had to keep
ducking to avoid being hit by all the cuddly toys that were being chucked on the
stage! Then Stephen went off stage and Mikey came on to sing "Good
Conversation", which got one of the biggest cheers of the night!! Then
Mikey walked off and walked back on again with the rest of the group to sing "A
Different Beat". During the choruses, the entire audience was doing the
hand actions whilst BZ just stood there, so, on the last chorus Ro joined in and
tried very hard to keep a straight face coz he'd obviously forgotten the dance!!
After ADB, Shanno and Keet introduced "This is Where I Belong". At
one point through the song, a single red rose is chucked at Ro, which makes him
beam like a kid in a candy store!!! Then BZ went straight into "Words"
and the whole audience sings along, also in "Words" Keith waved and
stuck his tongue out at me, don't ask me why!! Then Steo talked about "No
Matter What", their next song, which Ro kept forgetting the words to!
Surprise, surprise!! This also made Keith fall about laughing!! Strange sense
of humour! Ro introduces "I Love the Way You Love Me" by telling us
all to go out and buy it on the 23rd, as if we need any encorougment!!! He tells
us that the 23rd is also Zoe's birthday. Once that's over the Boyz leave stage
and Zoe bounces back on and asks us if we'd like to hear some more? The noise
was deafening!!! Boyzone come back on stage and Ro tries to persuade Zoe to sing
with them but she declines, luckily for us!! Sorry, Zoe!! BZ go right into
their last song of the night "Picture of You"and Ro forgets his words
AGAIN!!! Then Zoe comes back on to thank BZ, so Ro thanks Zoe and Zoe thanks BZ,
you get the picture! We go off air and once BZ have had their piccies taken
with Zoe they all go off stage. Some of the audience make a mad dash round the
back of Broadcasting House to wait for BZ to come out, but unfortunately they
get into their cars behind the gates of the car park, so we don't get to see
them!! And that's my story about Radio 1's exclusive BOYZONE concert! Thanks
Zoe, and most importantly, thanks to BOYZONE themselves for giving us all a
really fabby evening!! Byeeeeeee!!
luv Harriet
