Spitfire 1500 Page - week 1

I finally managed to get the car home.
I rented a Flatbed Car Transporter and together with a friend we picked it up and drove it to Wilrijk - Antwerp.

Everything went very smoothly until we decided to push it into my garage.
Nothing to do, the car wasn't moving a centimeter !!!

What now ?? Checking Gear, Everything OK. Checking brakes, aha, these were completely stuck at the rear. I must accidentaly have pushed on the brake when I got into the car. Stupid me !!
Solution : We simply lifted the rear with a jack and pushed it like that into its new home.
And I can assure you that this is not a very easy job when the underground isn't smooth concrete !! On monday I still had pains in my back.

I will very soon post some pictures of saturday.

Today I released the rear brakes. The car must be able to roll back and forwards.
What did I do ? Just took of the drums, and put the wheels back on.
It worked, its rolling back again. Still not easily but I didn't touched the front-brakes yet.

I spent the rest of the day cleaning and re-ordening my garage because in two weeks the body of the Renault 4cv will come back from the Sandblaster. I still have to figure out how I'm going to do to get them both into the garage in such a way that I can easily work on both of them. Will be tricky.

I hadn't much time so I only worked on the left hand front brake. luckily this wasn't completely stuck. The disc still turned. But it wasn't easy to get it the caliper off.
I took out the brake plates but of course couldn't remove the pistons.
I think I will have to use "Jeffs greasegun method" to get them out, or I'll maybe go to a Triumph garage to let them remove the pistons.

I went to the nearest Triumph-garage today and asked them if they could remove the pistons from the caliper. They can (if they're not completely rusted in place !)!!
And in the same time they will sandblast it for me.
For 25$ I will almost have a brand new (not rebuild) caliper. Quite a bargain when you know that a new one costs over 195$ !!
I also removed the caliper on the right hand side today. It came of quite easily as I know how to do it now !
I will bring it to the garage tomorrow and see what they've done with the first one.
Friday 12 may 2000
The garage succeeded in extracting the stuck pistons from the caliper. It looks nice !!
I brought them the second one and this will be ready next Tuesday. We'll see ....
Today I couldn't do anything more as I had to be the DJ at a birthday-party. Earn a lot of money to finance the restoration of the Spitfire. ;-)
Tomorrow I'm going to buy the first replacement parts at Anglo-Parts.
I'm also going to take a lot of pictures of the car.
Will post them next week.
