Our course in basic computers would not be complete without a study of the Internet.

You already know how to search and send e-mail, and you know that instant messaging, chat groups, and discussion groups are a waste of time. We are going to do something new, useful, and worthwhile.

In this exercise, you will experience one or more frum Jewish Information Groups on the Internet. These groups are very different from any others that you may know, even though they are run on Yahoogroups. Each group is staffed by top experts in the field, and the subscribers include interested people like yourself.

Select from specific moderated groups in the Jewish Groups series. Be sure to follow the following guidelines:

• Select one or more information groups from the list provided in class
• Submit a relevant, meaningful, and significant query on one of these groups. The query must be accepted by the moderator
• Alternatively, reply to a query submitted by another subscriber
• Only a serious and worthy query or response will be accepted by the moderator
• Only real issues are acceptable
• Your posting is worth 7 points in your grade
• Use a proper Subject line
• Delete any extra material below your posting
• Do not leave spaces in the To: line. Thus, Jewish Beginnings is written as jewishbeginnings
• You may request a different group if these topics do not appeal to you
• Word your queries briefly, clearly, and completely
• Give all of the necessary facts
• Write in a serious manner, with full and correct sentences and correct spelling
  Your writing style should be similar to that which is accepted in a college-level English composition class

  All of the messages that are accepted in your group will be sent to your emailbox automatically after you subscribe

  Don't expect many messages from any forum. Months may elapse with no messages being posted.

Most submissions to Information Groups are rejected. Only messages deemed by the moderator to be worthwhile are posted.

The groups that may be selected for this project are as follows:

Men or women:

• Jewish Business
• Jewish Traditions (Halacha)
• Jewish Beginnings (Help others who are new to Judaism)
• Ivrit
• Siyyata (Upper teens and twenties; basic questions about college, parents, relationships, dating and marriage, and even the military, for those starting out in an independent life)
• Davening
• Olim
• Kosher

Men

• Chiddush (Only men in the group. Present your chiddushim to the group for critiquing before telling them to your chavrusa or shiur)
• Leining

Women

• Jewish Homes (efficient running of Jewish homes)

• Married men or women

  • Jewish Spouses
  • Jewish Parenting

  Married women

  • Eshet Chayil (discussions in a group open only to women)
  • Tisha Kabin (General discussions among women)

In some cases, you may select other groups after discussing your request with the teacher.
