General guidelines

Are you reading this document at the beginning of the school year? If so, please don't expect to understand all of these terms and concepts yet. That's why we have our class sessions.

Your grade at the end of the school year will be based upon various factors, including the assignments submitted by the end of the school year. The major project must be submitted no later than four weeks before the end of the year, according to a schedule that we will discuss in class.

Your grade will be based upon the assignments submitted by the fourth (4th) class before the end of the school year. You should select and submit 80 points of projects from the list below. If you have not submitted enough projects or assignments by the deadline, then you will receive a grade based upon the number of points that you submitted. The other 20 points reflects your classwork and participation.

Your grade will be based on these assignments and on your classwork and participation.

Assignments with dates may not be submitted past the due date.

Some documents will be submitted on paper (that means they will be typed on a computer, of course). Documents that are submitted on paper must include a completed copy of the Translation Class Submission Form. Click here for the Translation Class Submission Form.

You will be asked to submit material either by our group e-mail or by regular e-mail directly to the teacher.

Semester 1, Week 5-8

Who can succeed as a translator? Prioritize your reasons, giving the most important reason first. Submit your translation to the class e-mail group on the date announced (0.5)

Translation humor

• Submit a real translation that makes me laugh (1 point per item)
• Two additional points for a photograph or a very clear and good photocopy
• This item may be submitted for credit during the second semester as well, up to the fourth class before the end of the school year
• Total original submissions in this section - whether they are 1-point or 3-point submissions - may not exceed 18 points over the entire school year.
• Translations accompanied by the original (non-returnable) document are worth 3 points. You may submit up to 6 funny original documents

Your translation for a real client: Date due depends on negotiations with your client (1-10)

Semester 1, Week 9 to the penultimate class of the semester

Translate part of a Shul handout page. Measure about 10 centimeters of a column, and submit it together with the original Hebrew and the Submission form (0.5)

Translation of a 60 cm (24") article of your choice (submit it on paper together with the Submission Form) (3)

Dictionary preferences and reasons (0.5)

Thinking translationly: Hebrew/English differences. Purpose: To help you think rapidly and automatically in both languages simultaneously. (0.5 points per item; limited to 20 points)

• This item may also be submitted during the first eight meetings of Semester 2
• Indicate the category for your translation. Choose from the list in the Translation website
• If you choose Opposites, then you may submit either English OR Hebrew items.
• Be sure to define each item into the secondary language.
• Check the website before submitting. Do not submit an item that is already on the website!

Analyze a significant thread with a large number of postings in Hebrew Translating. Tell how you would use the term in different contexts (4). You may do up to FOUR different threads, for a total of 16 points.

Show the teacher which document(s) you will translate for your major project (see the end of Semester 2)

Semester 2, Weeks 1-4

Bagrut terms - class presentation, before Purim (6)

Translation humor (see Semester 1, Week 5-8 for details). May be submitted during the first 8 classes of the second semester.

Create a Manual for Translators (20)

• Describe the things that a person needs to know and have in order to be a translator
• May be submitted during the first 8 classes of the second semester

Semester 2, Before Pesach

Hit reply and comment on an article translated by a classmate within 1 week of submission (1). You may submit up to 10 comments and receive up to 10 points

Translation vs. interpretation (2)

Major project

The major project (35 points) is Required.

Select any topic, document, or genre. The bad ורגמוהו draft must take 5 hours using the Grossman Method.

• Submit the first, awful draft by Rosh Chodesh Adar, either typed or handwritten, on paper (5)
• Give the teacher a photocopy of the original Hebrew document before Purim. Do not submit the original Hebrew document
• E-mail the final draft to the instructor during the week following Purim (5)

Semester 2, after Pesach

Meet with me privately according to a schedule that we will prepare together in class. Required for all students. (0)

• Meetings will take place six to ten sessions before the end of the year
• Bring the following documents to the meeting:
  • Your five-hour project
  • Your completed Translation Record printout
• Submit your final printed document within two weeks after your meeting (25)
• Checklist: Include these items as a single unit when submitting the revised final document:
  • Final perfect translation
  • A staple. That's right - it must be stapled in order to be accepted.
  • Photocopy of the original Hebrew
  • Completed submission form
  • Updated Translation Record

Semester 2, last four classes

• Papers may be submitted by the fifth class before the end.
• No papers may be submitted during the final four classes

• Only two students may select this option - one student for each of the two websites. Students next year may have to do some of your exercises! (4)
• Work only on the Translation section
• Create exercises for each page on the website (only one student; students next year may have to do some of your exercises!) (6)
• Find four mistakes or bad links on the website. Indicate the name of the page (in small letters on the bottom right corner), the mistake, and how it should be corrected. Most mistakes were put in on purpose for this proofreading exercise. (0.5 points for each mistake; receive credit for up to 4 mistakes).
