The Liberty Legion

America's Homefront Heroes...

After the Invaders, the Liberty Legion was the greatest assemblage of World War II heroes. The group was formed by Bucky for one main reason...to defeat the Invaders! Well, actually, the Invaders had been brainwashed by the Red Skull and became Nazi agents. Bucky assumed only another super-powered group stood a chance against his mind-muddled allies and sent out a distress call to every available super-hero. Seven newcomers to the heroing game heard and responded: the Patriot, Whizzer, Miss America, Red Raven, the Thin Man, Blue Diamond, and Jack Frost. Banded together as the Liberty Legion, they were able to free the Invaders from the Red Skull's control. After defeating the Nazi genius the Liberty Legion decided to remain together as a homefront equivalent to the Invaders. The two teams basically acted as two halves of the same group, with the Invaders fighting Hitler abroad and the Liberty Legion battling Nazi saboteurs and sympathizers in America.

The Liberty Legion next encountered the Fantastic Four member Ben Grimm--The Thing. The Nazi menace Brain Drain had stolen vibranium and was going to use it to build an indestructible flying weapon for the Nazis. Realizing this would help the Nazis win the war and upset the balance of good and evil in the universe, the celestial Watcher intervened and sent the Thing back in time to 1942 to help the Liberty Legion defeat Brain Drain and his cohorts Master Man, U-Man, and Sky Shark. The Legion split up to battle these villains and managed to defeat only Sky Shark. They regrouped and joined the Thing to battle Brain Drain and all of his henchmen. This time, the Legion managed to defeat Master Man and U-Man, and the Thing took care of Brain Drain. After the victory, the Watcher appeared to return the Thing to the present (1976).

The Liberty Legion and the Invaders next crossed paths during a battle with the Iron Cross. After this battle, the Whizzer and Miss America temporarily left the Legion to join the Invaders. Shortly after WWII, the Invaders and Liberty Legion melded together to form the All-Winners Squad.
