Biography:The Life and Times of Captain
Midnight
Jakob Abraham Dylan was born December 9,
1969, on 92-94 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, NYC.
He is the youngest of 5 children-Jesse, Samuel, Anna, and
Maria (step-sister). He grew up in L.A. where he attended
the private Windward School. In high school he maintained a
D-average because he was too shy to give reports in front
of the class. After that, intending to become a painter, he
tried his hand at art school at Parsons School of Design in
NYC. This college experience lasted for three weeks before
he went home, at which time he penned "6th Avenue
Heartache." In 1990, he assembled a band and they played on
regularly on Tuesday nights in the Kibbitz Room of Canter's
Deli. In 1992 they signed on with Virgin Records and on
August 25, "The Wallflowers" was released. This "was no
ordinary debut" and was hailed by critics, but was largely
ignored by the buying public. At that time, which Jakob
describes as "teen spirit everywhere," the market was not
friendly for a folk-roots-rock album. After a mutual
agreement, the band was released from the label who only
offered publicity through the exploitation of Jake's name. An amiable parting, for Virgin did not hold the band responsible to pay back a debt of any kind.
This ushered in a period of 3 years which Jake filled by
writing new songs and regrouping his band. Finally on May
21 1996, "Bringing Down The Horse" was released on
Interscope Records. Since then the album has gone
quintuple platinum and "OH" has pocketed a Grammy each for
Jake and the band.
