Indigo Girls: One of the Greatest Musical Duos in the World

by kelli kay

amy & emily

amy ray & emily saliers have been playing together since highschool & have been friends ever since elementary school, when Amy was in 5th grade & emily was in 6th. they started their musical careers playing in highschool when Amy was going to do a song with emily for a pta show, & the song was "junkies lament." for some reason, emily didn't do it, so amy had to play it by herself. later on, after playing solo gigs, they joined forces & were known as "saliers & ray," then the "b-band," & finally (after amy looked through a dictionary & decided she liked the word indigo & felt it described them well....they became the "indigo girls"....

their blend of vocal harmonies are captivating & very powerful. add to that their wonderful ability to play a very diverse range of songs, styles, & instruments...acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, etc....

the indigo girls have come a long way, & they just keep on growing as artists & as people, & that's a very important thing for them as well as their fans. they have so many amazing songs. & they keep on making them better every time. the new cd come on now social really mixes it up with various styles--from folk & appalachian to rock, with lots of musical guests appearing on their songs, too.

the indigo girls are very special to me, & the fact that they invite talented friends to come & record with them & invite other musicians to join them onstage when they play--that just makes it a real friendly, fun, good time environment....jammin' with anyone who wants to come onstage & play is something not alot of musicians do, so it's nice to see that kind of comradery among musicians....

in the alley...

now, i haven't seen the indigo girls live yet, but it's my ultimate goal to get to see them play, & soon i hope, 'cuz i really am enjoying every cd. i love their songs, & i am so glad i came across this wonderfully talented, inspirational, energetic, powerful, poetic, intense, truthful duo when i did.

they support many important causes: honor the earth, the national gay & lesbian task force (ngltf), the zapatistas, youth pride, handgun control, greenpeace, habitat for humanity, women's action for new directions (wand), and parents and friends of lesbians and gays (pflag). they speak the simple truth. they touch people's lives with their music. i know, 'cuz ever since i've become an indigo girls fan, i've become more involved, aware, & active. their music has definitely helped me, & it means the world to me 'cuz i like amy & emily--love music just as much as they do.

it's so true that music is food for the soul....if you've never heard their music, i strongly suggest you take a listen 'cuz they will get to your soul, & you will become a fan just as i am. if you're truly listening to their message in their music, you will become a better person, too, which is always a good thing in this complicated world. it's my belief that if everyone would really listen to the indigo girls, this world would be a much better place.

now i wanna end by saying "thank you" to amy & emily for being yourselves & doing what you love to do. you're very inspiring & great role models for any young kid who wants to be a musician or who just wants to be the best person they can be & be themselves. i wish you both the very best always & will be looking forward to every new cd you make....keep writing those excellent songs you write, & keep touching people's souls with your music, activism, & courage. lots of love, peace, & music....
