1997-98 was yet another season in
which he promised much for Liverpool, but failed to have an extended run
in the side in which to fulfil his rich promise as a central defender,
who can break down attacks and then set up counter attacks with sudden
swiftness.
His skill also allows him to play in any number of positions,
especially out wide, where he runs at defenders to express himself in attacking
areas. Still on the verge of full England international honours, having
played for the "B" side against Chile last February and as an over-age
player for the U21s the following month, a settled run could see him called
up in 1998-99.
