Injuries again meant that Rob had mixed fortunes
for Liverpool, this time in 1997-98, after he had begun the season so well
and had begun to re-discover the form of two years ago. On his day, he
is the complete right back, who is decisive in the tackle, wins balls cleanly,
passes quickly and accurately over both short and long distances, and is
not adverse to getting down the flank like a traditional winger to cross.
Unfortunately, although the tactical awareness is still in place, injuries
have slowed him down somewhat and he will be working on that aspect of
his game with the view to starting 1998-99 in pole position. Interestingly,
he has yet to score for the club since arriving from Crewe back in October
1991.
Was ruled out of the last few matches due to him requiring a hernia
operation and, at the same time, pledged his long-term future to the club.
