1997-98 was a season of mixed fortunes
for the Norwegian, who had quickly established himself in the back line
at Liverpool. His strong tackling and raiding down the flanks proved a
useful asset for the club, but after the manager, Roy Evans, reverted to
a flat back four midway through the campaign, he struggled to retain his
place and was in and out of the side from thereon.
Many had expected him to make the international breakthrough for his
country, especially with the World Cup being held in France during the
summer, but the fact that he was not a regular fixture at club level would
not have helped his cause and he was ignored.
