Still a major player, despite sometimes
appearing out of position for Liverpool in 1997-98, Phil remains a defender
of the highest order, only enforced absences forcing him out of action.
And, while there are those who think that his role is purely a destructive
one, it is positively constructive because, when winning the ball, he is
more often than not able to find the front runners with pin-point accuracy
and thus set the side up for a dangerous attack.
Continuing to play for the Republic, in October it was reported that
he had agreed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the club worth a
staggering £1 million a year.
