Before picking up a knee injury in
the game against Liverpool's arch enemies, Everton, at Anfield towards
the end of last February, Robbie had been in devastating form, scoring
with regularity on the scale of his mentor, Ian Rush.
The injury saw him unavailable for selection for the rest of the campaign
and, according to the physio, Mark Leather, the striker's comeback target
would be January 1999. As in previous seasons, many of his goals were vital
to the cause, his ability to be in the right place at the right time offering
him more goalscoring opportunities than the vast majority of other strikers
in the game, and his ability to produce a positive finish to a good percentage
of them placing him in the top bracket.
Comfortable in possession, with great technique, much guile, and the
ability to hold the ball up or go it alone, the fans can hardly wait for
his return, especially in partnership with the mercurial Michael Owen.
Played just once for England in 1997-98, against Cameroon, but is bound
to get further chances once fully fit.
