partial transcript from  "The Doors In Europe", 1988 ish

Grace: "Hello, my name is Grace Slick and this is Paul Kantner and in 1968 Paul and I were members of a band called Jefferson airplane, and both of us toured europe for the first time with a band called The Doors, and what we're going to do is talk here a little bit about what we can remember of that time
    [Paul puts his finger in the air as if he's having trouble remembering. Grace laughs and hits him on the shoulder
saying]
    Yeah, you can remember something...
    ... I Think what the Doors and the Airplane had in common was the shift that came about which was from the 50's into the 60's, which was partly musical."

Paul: "And partly accidental history. I think the whole 60's was more than just music, and bands I think, as well and artists, as well as poets, as well as creators of furniture for that matter, reflected the chaos that was swirling around us. And rather than say `right, we're going to write strange songs, you just wrote what came, and it wasaccepted... "
            [Paul goes on to talk about San francisco, America and London in the 60's amoung othr things]

Grace: "Amsterdam was very much like San Francisco at the time. All the buildings were painted the same way, in the psychedelic sense if you want to talk about that, the business of having the door frame yellow, the doors red, the frames around the windows are blue, and the walls are purple, and there's bongs in all four corners of the room.
    And in Amsterdam also drugs are legal.
    There was one main street where they had shops of our kind, which means the psychedelic stuff- hand made tie-dye, beads and that kind of stuff- and we're walking down this street, both bands, you know, we weren't walking in a big group, Jim was over there-"
Paul: "Swinging on a bottle like a gunfighter"
Grace: "-and we were here.
    But the kids would offer us drugs, everything, drugs of all kinds, so you say `thankyou very much`, put it in your pocket, maybe have a little bit of that later, but you don't take everything you're given because otherwise you'll be dead. Jim, on the other hand took everything that was given to him, on the spot.
Paul: "We were playing in Amsterdam and Jim came out in the middle of our set- we would trade off, we'd open one night, they'd open the next night.- we were opening and Jim came out in our set, somewhat drug abused, and started doing almost like soofy dancing, to Plastic Fantastic Lover, which is a pretty fast song for us, and getting really ild and having a good time"
Grace: "He looked like a pinwheel"
Paul: "and we, in our perverse manner, started playing faster, just because he sort of invaded our turf. We didn't consult ourselves, it just occured, and it was amusing, and he went faster and faster and then he collapsed, and he couldn't do the show.
    Then when we were in our dressing room, we heard Jim was sick or something.
    Then the Doors started- we heard the Doors coming from out on the stage, so we went to check them out.
    There was no Morrison out there, and quietly Ray is there behind singing "baby you could light my fire", probably having never done it before"
Grace: "The whole set"
Paul: "The whole set, and sounding very much like Jim"
Grace: "And thats where [Ray] Manzerek comes in. The man is amazing, because i've watched him, and heard other stories about him having to do things that are just increddible.
I dont know of another band where the keyboard player would all of a sudden take over the show, and sing, and play the piano and get all the phrasing right without probably having ever done it before.
    I don't know of another band where the lead singer was that erratic. We were sort of erratic, but Marty [Balin] and I were generally on stage"...

Grace: I think his looking the way he did, being born that way, was not entirely terrible. The guy looked physically real good.
He wasn't doing- and I'm not going to name any group now because I don't want to slam anybody- but there's alot of guys who get up and do alot of posturing out front, and you just think `go home`. Like Keith Richards said `shave and go home` because its, it's corny. It's obvious that you're doing that because you want to come off as something, you want everybody, you want girls to get a hard on. Whats the word for hard on? what do we get, soft ons? wet- something,
    And you just think [sort of laughs]
    But Jim wasn't doing any of that stuff"
