WHY CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS
Check out the video
stills I took!
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
I seen ya I seen ya I seen ya 'round
for a long long time
I really I really I really remember
when you drank my wine
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
I seen ya I seen ya I seen ya walkin’
down in Chinatown
I called ya I called ya I called but
you did not look around
I pay my I pay my I pay my money to
the welfare line
I seen ya I seen ya I seen ya standing
in it everytime
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
The color the color the color of your
skin don’t matter to me
As long as as long as long as we can
live in harmony
I kinda I kinda I kinda like to be
the president
And I could and I could and I could
show you how your money’s spent
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
Sometimes I don’t speak right
But did I know what I was talking
about
I know you’re working for the CIA
They wouldn’t have you in the mafia
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
Why can’t we be friends (4x)
Why can’t we be friends (4x)

I REALLY I REALLY I REALLY DO LOVE THIS SONG! (I'm shouting because I'm pretty sure some hate this song as it is so sugary and syrupy sweet--heck, I love lots of sugar and honey!) Truthfully though, the lyrics make no real sense (actually it does, but i'm just tired of writing); nevertheless, it sounds damn good and sometimes that’s the only thing that matters. Plus it has a wonderful message of love, peace, brother/sisterhood, and harmony. (Anyway I just wished that they included the rap that Steve would do or improvise at the finale of this song in their concerts.)
I heard that this is a remake. Is it so? If so, please tell me who the original singer (3) is.
If you are interested, check out my
updated
versions of this song. I think Smash mouth can tweak this song
a bit when performing live by adding new lyrics. Sing about skinny people,
fat people, short people, tall people, handicapped people, gays and lesbians,
etc.
footnotes:
(1) initially, i had no idea
as to what steve harwell was mumbling about in that line! i thought it
went “a teller august don't matter to me”...also, it took me awhile to
figure out that "ma-fa-yeah" was "mafia" and not "month of may."

(3) thank you, King
Brygon of Lucitania, for telling me who the original singer of
this song was! it was by war (a), the same group whose immortal
song low rider hummed into our hearts in the opening credits of
the critically-acclaimed film classic: cheech & chong's up in smoke.
athlete's footnote:
(a) here's
a comparison
between war's song and smash mouth's version
trivial fungus:
how many times do they sing "why can't
we be friends" in this song? (silly me! the answer's on the lyrics on top!
anyway, check out this intriguing mystery
i've unfortunately created concerning the significance of this number...)
check out 4 of my updated versions of this song. i love it so much that i have composed alternative versions of it.
