Major Site Change

'Why The Changes?'
The reason for this is very simple. Many sites are no longer allowing ra, or other music files, to be loaded and played from their servers, or they are just plain shutting down the 'free sites'.

1
What Is Happening?

You have the United States Government
( Big Brother )
getting involved in the web.

'Uncle Sam' is now dictating what can and can not be allowed out here. In recent times we have seen them go after both Microsoft & Napster.
( plus numerous orders we don't hear much about )
( Naturally - they use the disquise of: 'Righteousness' )

Accordingly - because of these law-suits being allowed by United States Courts ... other businesses ( free servers ) are becoming afraid, or very careful of what they are allowing on their servers.

Then to make the matters worse ...
It's no secret that the internet has suffered a terrible blow this past year with the fall-out of tech stocks and the shutting down of 100's of dot-coms. The back-wash from that blood-bath has created a major change in the free web hosting market-place. While there are still a number of free web space offerings, we are seeing a land-slide of web providers dumping their free hosting and moving to paid up-grades in order to stay solvent.

Xoom
( aka:  NBCI )

NBC the parent company of NBCi announced that it would shut down NBCi.com and acquire the assets of NBCi. The NBCi.com content will be integrated with NBC owned sites. However, it is not clear if the search engine and directory services will be available. As of today, we have not seen any changes to the NBCi.com site and it is not clear when the shut down date is. It is possible that they are waiting for all the paid banner ads to run out before they shut down.

You can read the details at:

In recent days it's been near impossible to up-date any xoom ( nbci ) sites.
For that matter - its been just about impossible to access same at all. Generally - all you'll get is a page not found
:-(

Tripod

Over the course of the last few weeks - this domain has deleted many of the real-audio sites from it's servers. The reason given:
'Copy-Right Infringments'
or as they put it
'Violation of The Terms Of Service'
It matters not that these files are poor quality at best ...
the truth is - they are just using to much space & band-width on their servers.

4
Fortune City

Well this domain does a lot of ( what I call )
'Flip Flopping'
One moment they are allowing real-audio, and other music files ... the next they are not. One moment there is a file size - the next it has changed.
ETC ... Etc ... etc

Writing to customer / tech support does no good
The reason is simple - They Don't Reply
:-(

Currently - they are allowing ra files to be loaded - but alas - they won't stream, nor at times even down-load.

5
Acme City

This domain has just been 'incorporated/bought',
and is now part of AOL Town Pages

In the past few months - it has been impossible to up-date the sites there
( File Manager - won't load the files properly - especially bigger files )
( FTP Server - just won't answer most times )

Writing to customer / tech support does no good
The reason is simple - They Don't Reply
:-(

As for AOL Town - the room they allow, plus the file limitations, make it un-usable.

'What Is The Answer?'
I wish I had one, but I don't. What I do know is this:

In order for us to maintain these sites is a lot of work, and time, being spent on our end.
( anyone that doesn't think so - give it a try )
The loss of a site is more then just a few juke-boxes ....
it's the loss of many hours of our time, and the 'wear-an-tear' on our systems.
( the time it took to alter / build the HTML )
( the time it took to load the songs to these servers )
( the time spend getting all the files ready, etc )

Accordingly - in order to try to 'stop / slow down' the loss of more sites, I am trying to give these domains more exposure - by allowing them to be able to display more banners ( what-ever ), thus allowing them to generate a little more revenue at their end.

Does this mean that people will have to spend a little more time to access the site?
YES
In the over-all realm of things - will this really matter to the domain?
one site - NO ... but if more did so - YES
Will this stop the site from going 'out-of-business', or stopping 'free service'?
maybe YES ... maybe NO - but it can't hurt.
Will it help stop the 'Band-Width' Crooks?
NO
( for sure - they're helping to put us out of business )

In order to continue to try to bring you the music ...
this site will incorporate with another. Hopefully - this will work OK. So please bear with me while I 'tie-in' - the newer format that will be used. YES - Netscape will be able to navigate the newer format, once it is in place.
