Edenrot formed in early 1994, while all of its members were still in high school. The original line-up was Allan Ginther - guitar/vocals, Scott Hoffman - guitar/vocals, Justin Martin - bass, and James Boroi - drums, piano. The name Edenrot was adopted both for its meaning/imagery as the decay of all worlds (social, political, moral, religious, personal), and as a reference to the (once) mighty Paradise Lost. In the winter of 1996, the band released its self-financed debut, "Ashes of Forever", a ten song CD that mixed Megadeth’s "riff-first" philosophy with melodic death/doom and a dual growled vocal approach. Shortly after "Ashes..." was released, Justin Martin left the band to pursue other interests, and Rose Mraz took over as bassist. About the same time, Scott took the position of rhythm guitarist in Dawnbringer, and recorded the "Unbleed" album with the group, while keeping Edenrot as his primary endeavor.
During 1997, Edenrot focused their songwriting approach and emphasized the more melodic/expressive elements of their music, the result being "The Land Where the Crow Starves" four song EP, released by Twilight Records in 1998. A more epic, morose effort than the debut, the EP featured more layered arrangements and a diversified vocal approach, with Scott exploring low-toned clean vocals and growls, and Allan pushing his voice into the fierce upper ranges of rasp. Between these two releases, Edenrot grew into a quite energetic live act, despite the relative scarcity of metal-friendly venues in Western Pennsylvania. The band has played in Maryland and New York, and has shared the stage with Garden of Shadows, Thorns of the Carrion, CorpseVomit, and underground legends Deceased. In late ‘98/ early ‘99, Edenrot recorded a cover of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and a new original, "Aries Shield" , for inclusion on Twilight’s "Maiden America" tribute album (which has sold 1500 worldwide since summer ‘99). Scott recorded a second full-length, "Catharsis Instinct", with Dawnbringer.
By the summer of ‘99, Jim’s commitment to Edenrot had waned, and he and the band parted ways. Undeterred, the remaining members began work on songs for their next full length, two of which were recorded in September ‘99 with the help of The Hammer, drummer of Dawnbringer. "Idles" and "Stained Glass Eyes" sees Edenrot continuing to refine their song-oriented metal hybrid style, mixing strong hooks and melodies with solid riffs, a diverse vocal approach, intelligent lyrics, and a sense of class and professionalism lacking from many underground acts.
Edenrot are currently writing material for their next album, which promises to be more varied in dynamics, tempo, and arrangement than their previous work. The band is seeking an established metal label that sees the potential in hungry underground bands and seeks to develop it.
