Lilith Fair Bound For Europe Next
Year
The first-ever Lilith Fair concert
outside North America took place Wednesday night at London's Royal
Albert Hall. Before the sold-out show, Lilith founder Sarah McLachlan
told a press conference that plans were underway to bring the Fair to
Europe as a touring package in 1999. "We're going to ask a whole
bunch of [artists], but we just last night had our first
meeting about it," she said. "It's a whole summer away."
According to Billboard Bulletin,
initial plans call for a short run of Lilith Fair shows to take place
in Europe in late May and early June next year.

Ladies Of Lilith Leave For
London
Prestigious Royal Albert Hall
welcomes Sarah McLachlan and company on first overseas
jaunt.
Senior Writer Gil Kaufman
reports:
The women of Lilith are packing for
London on the first-ever European date of the wildly successful,
all-female summer tour. The trip would make Lilith the third
traveling U.S. festival to take its music across the
Atlantic.
On Sept. 23, tour co-founder Sarah
McLachlan will be joined by Ireland's Sinéad O'Connor, former
Yaz leader Alison Moyet, lo-fi rocker Beth Orton, former Brand New
Heavies diva N'Dea Davenport and pop singer Lisa Loeb for a
performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, according to
McLachlan's manager.
"Europe isn't like the U.S., in that
they don't have the same series of amphitheaters as we do," said
Terry McBride, McLachlan's manager and one of the co-founders of
Lilith. "But we're going to do this one-off [date] and see
how everyone reacts to it. And if they react well, maybe next year
we'll try to do two weeks in Europe."
Ozzy Osbourne's metal-edged Ozzfest
made the jump last summer to Europe. The skate- and punk-oriented
Warped tour took its act on the road to the Far East and Australia
last summer, and will visit Europe this fall.
Whether or not the tour goes
overseas, McBride said that next year's Lilith will not take on as
ambitious a schedule as did this second annual, 12-week tour. McBride
said the 1999 Lilith, whose roster is being considered, will be pared
down to its original seven-week schedule.
"Touring the U.S. for 12 weeks was a
very long tour and, even though we would have liked to, because we
were on the road for so long in the U.S., it took us out of the
European festival season," McBride said. The London date will be more
like a traditional theater show, with none of the side stages or
midway attractions of the U.S. dates, due to the single-stage setup
of the venue.
McBride did predict, however, that
the gig at the prestigious venue will be like "seeing six of your
favorite artists with a more warm and cozy feeling than you get from
other Lilith dates." Among the artists who have played at the hall
are guitar greats Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, as well as piano
songstress Tori Amos.
Building on the unexpected success of
last summer's inaugural outing, this year's Lilith -- which featured
appearances from O'Connor, Liz Phair, Bonnie Raitt, Lauryn Hill of
the Fugees, Paula Cole, Mono, Lucinda Williams and Erykah Badu, among
dozens of others -- was another smash affair.
The 1997 Lilith tour was one of the
most popular summer festivals of the year, proving, among other
things, that a women-heavy lineup could command large audiences night
after night. The tour played to more than 600,000 fans and, according
to McLachlan, raised more than $700,000 for various causes and
charities. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music, a double-CD
set of performances from last year's tour, was released on April 28.
Based on incomplete numbers from tour-industry trade magazine
Amusement Business, the tour grossed nearly $19 million this
year.
This year's tour began in Portland,
Ore., on June 19 and closed the U.S. leg on Aug. 26 in Boise, Idaho.
The final North American tour date is Aug. 31, in Vancouver, B.C. A
representative at McLachlan's publicity firm, Shore Fire Media, said
the second phase of the tour has thus far sold more than 900,000
tickets to date and raised nearly $1.5 million for various charities
and nonprofit organizations.
If the London show goes well,
organizers might be smart to expand upon the overseas schedule next
year, said Ray Waddell, live entertainment and touring editor at the
Amusement Business trade journal.
"I don't see why the concept wouldn't
work," Waddell said. "Europeans are as festival-oriented as anyone.
There's a longer history of rock festivals than in the U.S., maybe
not in the tradition of traveling festivals, but at least the concept
of multi-act concerts with ancillary attractions is
there."
McBride said next year's U.S. Lilith
tour will open on July 5 at an undisclosed venue and will be preceded
by a live album from McLachlan as well as another Lilith Fair
compilation next spring.

'Great music, great
women'
Lilith Fair organizer Sarah McLachlan
defies critics
By JOSHUA OSTROFF -- Ottawa
Sun
"So be nice to me. Don't rip me
apart, all right? Or I'll come looking for you."
The threat of Sarah McLachlan coming
to look for me when Lilith Fair rolls into Lansdowne Park on Friday
is not necessarily an unwelcome one. But it is indicative of the way
she has been treated by the media since launching her women-oriented
music festival last year.
"We had backlash before we even
started. Let's see ..." McLachlan pauses while on the phone from a
tour stop in Charlotte, N.C. to consider her festival's alleged
transgressions. "We weren't diverse enough. We didn't have this kind
of act, we didn't have that kind of act. We weren't political enough,
we were too political.
"It's human nature, like people
watching a basketball game. You look at someone who misses a shot and
you go: 'If you just moved over two inches you would have gotten it
in.' We do press conferences every day where I'm forced to justify
this whole thing every step of the way."
One of the major complaints from last
year was that the line-up -- featuring McLachlan, Jewel, Indigo Girls
and others -- was not musically- or ethnically-diverse
enough.
That particular criticism has faded
with the addition of hip-hop artists such as Missy Elliot, Queen
Latifah and Lauryn Hill (of the Fugees) and alternative acts like
Drugstore, Luscious Jackson and Liz Phair.
But McLachlan says the increased
diversity is simply a reflection of last summer's success.
"We asked them all last year and they
said no. That's one thing nobody likes to hear," she says. "(This
year) we had a lot of people knocking on our doors saying 'we'd love
to be a part of it.' Whereas last year we had to hunt people
down."
As for the political nature of show,
McLachlan doesn't understand why it should even be an issue. For her,
Lilith is just about celebrating women in music.
"We never set out to make a huge
political stance. Yet so many people saw this as a great platform for
them to jump on with their own agendas," says McLachlan, bitterness
creeping into her voice. "When we didn't live up to that expectation
a lot of people got upset."
McLachlan started the tour as
reaction to a general unwillingness among concert promoters and radio
programmers to play women artists back to back.
"I'm not naive enough to think that
the old pig-dog attitudes have actually really changed," she says.
"They just had to be reckoned with because we have proven that we are
a viable commodity. That in itself is rather unfortunate, that it is
the only way we're recognized."
But McLachlan is smart enough to know
trying to please everyone is a lost cause. Instead, she concentrates
on the positive aspects of the tour, refusing to even judge one show
or performance over another.
"They're all great for hundreds of
little different reasons. Great music, good energy, great women.
Great guys too, lots of really nice guys in the bands."
Many others apparently agree, making
Lilith Fair one of the most successful North American summer tours
two years running.
One of the signature aspects of both
years has been a small number of headliners who play every date and a
large number of rotating artists. Ottawa's show will feature
McLachlan, Paula Cole, Emmylou Harris, Diana Krall and Liz Phair on
the main stage.
"I'd say (the shows) definitely lack
consistency. Thank God. If you're talking consistency in it being the
same every night, that's boring," says McLachlan.
In between organizing the two tours,
McLachlan also had time to release an album, Surfacing, which won her
four Junos, two Grammys and a whole lot of album sales.
Despite Lilith Fair's impressive
cultural impact, McLachlan is not worried about turning into a Perry
Farell (Lollapalooza's organizer), who is now more famous for his
tour than his music.
"Fame has nothing to do with what I
do in the first place. I make music for the love of making
music.
"I love doing this festival. But the
rest of the year, you know, I'm doing other things."

McLachlan's Lilith to Remain
Testosterone-Free
Forget what you've read: There will
never be any male acts at the Lilith Fair.
Sarah McLachlan, the Canadian
singer-songwriter who heads up the Grrrl Power concert tour, says she
entertained the idea of bringing men aboard, -- but only briefly.
"That was one of my early moments of weakness from being beaten down
by the media," she tells the Boston Globe. "I thought, 'God, maybe I
should make this more equal.'... But no, definitely not. Lilith is
what it is. It's a beautiful thing, so why change it?"
Next year might be the last for
Lilith, which wraps up its second annual summer tour on Sun., Aug.
31, in Vancouver, BC. "We're going to stop and reassess things
[after next year]," says McLachlan. "I don't know what we'll
do. We don't have anything planned at this point."
If anything will stop McLachlan from
hitting the concert trail, it's family. "I know I want to have kids
-- and I'm not going to come out on the road when I have kids." --

A Fair to Remember
LILITH MEMBERS DISCUSS THIS YEAR'S
TOUR
On the eve of the second annual
Lilith Fair concert tour, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY sits down with
festival founder Sarah McLachlan and 4 other performers: Natalie
Merchant, Missy Elliot, Paula Cole, and Liz Phair. What follows is a
selection from the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly which
features Sarah, Natalie, Missy, Paula, and Liz on the
cover.
***
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Lilith
certainly tapped into something last year - now it's hail the
conquering heroine and all that.
SARAH MCLACHLAN: I'm so happy that
this year - partially because of that success - we're allowed to make
a more diverse bill. We asked so many people last year who said no,
who didn't know what Lilith was all about, and were hesitant. And
honestly, I can't blame them. It would be like if Lollapalooza asked
me last year, and I looked at the bill and went, "There's no fuckin'
way I'm going out with Metallica! I'll get my ass kicked!"
***
McLACHLAN: ...I've fought an image
long and hard of me being the ethereal soul who rides off in the
sunset on a white horse. [To Phair] It's like you and your
bad-girl thing - I got typecast as the demure waif...
EW: But it does seem, Sarah, like
you've gone to a different extreme, at least with that sexy
Levi's-Lilith advertorial you did for the most recent issue of
Vogue.
McLACHLAN: You're basically at the
mercy of the stylist and photographer...I've got my hand down my
pants because the jeans were too damn tight, and when I was scrunched
over - you know, you need to sort of fix yourself - there they were
taking the picture...I remember that exact moment, too, going
"Oh-kay, I bet this is the f---ing shot they're gonna choose!" And of
course it was. My mother is horrified: "You look like a heroin
addict! You look like Courtney Love in The People vs. Larry Flynt!"
Thanks, Mom!
***
COLE: We can spout a lot of words,
but I think really it's our actions that determine the meaning of our
lives...
MERCHANT: There's that whole
argument: Do you have to be a good person to be a good artist?
Because I'm always saying "Bob Dylan is an a - hole in Don't Look
Back. The way he treats people is reprehensible." Then you always
hear people: "Oh, he was so cool in Don't Look Back!" And I'm like,
"He wrote great songs, but he was mean!" Picasso...
McLACHLAN: Tyrant!
MERCHANT: And a misogynist, from what
we read.
PHAIR: Frank Lloyd Wright never paid
his bills.
MERCHANT: It just seems like as an
artist, you can excuse a lot of things because you created something
that was meaningful to the culture. And my argument has always been
no, you have to live a good life, be a good person...
***
EW: Missy, with your
battle-of-the-sexes tracks, do you sense women and men relating on
different levels?
ELLIOT: Basically, I write for the
females, because we go through the most stuff. But even though I'm
speaking from a woman's point of view, guys can relate, because they
know the dirt that they do. I always write realist. In the hip-hop
world, we don't get this deep! We're just straightforward: "Okay, he
was playin' on me, and I'm coming to your house, we're gonna
fight!"
[Laughter]
EW: Missy might be an unexpected
presence here, but so, Liz, are you. You might've been predicted to
side more with some of the rock women who've made statements against
Lilith, like Courtney Love, Tori Amos, and Ani DiFranco, who feel it
perpetuates a Women in Rock separatist media mythos.
PHAIR: If they choose not to be a
part of it, that's absolutely fine. But to me, it's like a blessed
event. I hate my job, because it's always surrounding me with men,
and I never feel like I have peers. I'm so excited to be around other
women who do what I do - I don't even care what it stands for. Can
you, as a man, imagine working in an entirely female workplace, from
the boss down? You'd be like, "Periods - whatever!" I get junior high
feelings coming on...
MERCHANT: ...There's just so much
going on in the world that's worth protesting without saying anything
negative about a group of women that are just going to play some
music.

Indie rock princess Liz Phair will
replace Sheryl Crow on three Lilith Fair dates this month.
Phair will join up with Lilith on
June 24 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., June 28
at Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix and June 29 at the New Mexico Wine
Festival in Albuquerque, N.M., according to a source for the
tour.
Phair will fly in specifically for
these dates, but no replacement has been named for the two remaining
shows that Crow left open -- June 20 at the Gorge in George, Wash.,
and June 27 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Although Crow's cancellation news
becamepublic only a few days ago, the singer called Lilith founder
Sarah McLachlan last month to say she wouldn't be playing those
select dates, according to Crow's label, A&M Records. Crow
explained that after two years of working and touring non-stop she
needed "some time at home to regroup."
With these three additional dates,
Phair will now delight Lilith-goers on 15 dates this summer,
including stops in Wantagh, New York; Columbia, Md.; Austin, Texas;
and Chicago. (AriBendersky)

From Lilith to Lilith Fair to be
Released June 19
May 04, 1998 - The book From Lilith
to Lilith Fair explores how the most successful concert tour of 1997,
the all-woman Lilith Fair, came to pass. Tracing Lilith's roots from
the Monterey Pop festival in the sixties, to the Michigan Womyn's
Music festival and on to Lollapalooza in the 90s, the book provides a
thoughtful discussion of what is at the root of this blossoming
cultural phenomenon. Through extensive interviews with the performers
on Lilith Fair, author Buffy Childerhose tells the story of Lilith:
how the event was conceived, the performer's reactions, and the
impact the tour has had on the role of women in music.
The book includes quotes from
performers and organizers, profiles of several of the Lilith artists,
and an exploration of the media frenzy around the fair. As a creative
and informative addition, there are profiles of sixteen pioneering
women throughout history Ð role models for all women Ð
helping to situate Lilith Fair in a context by which it can be best
understood.
The book is beautifully designed by
John Rummen, who also designed the Lilith stage, and Sarah
McLachlan's album Surfacing. With over sixty photographs, many of
them previously unpublished, this book is a great collector's
item!
Historical profiles include:
Artemisia Gentileschi, Countess Ada Lovelace, E.Pauline Johnson
(Tekahionwake), Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Emma Goldman, Hannah Senesh,
Hildegarde of Bingen, Hypatia, Lise Meitner, Mary Wollstonecraft,
Murasaki Shukibu, Nellie McClung, Rani Lakshmibai, Rosa Parks,
Sojourner Truth, and Trung Trac and Trung Nhi.
This book will be available at select
Starbucks locations throughout North America, as well as in book and
music stores throughout Canada. You can also order it through

PLANS FOR LILITH FAIR 1998 NEAR
COMPLETION
Tour Builds On Last Year's Success
With A Wider Reaching Tour Kick Off June 19, with Over 50 North
American Dates to Follow
What was once a dream is on the verge
of becoming a cultural touchstone. This year's Lilith Fair festival
promises to be bigger and better in every way -- more performers,
more shows, and more cities. In 1997, Sarah McLachlan's vision was to
create an event that would celebrate women in music. Despite the many
people who were convinced that an all-women festival tour wouldn't
work, McLachlan forged ahead. Selling out venues across North
America, Lilith Fair became the top-grossing festival tour of 1997
according to Pollstar, and garnered the trade magazine's award for
"Tour of the Year." Lilith Fair also scored covers of magazines
including Entertainment Weekly and Time. "It was a great example of
strong women out there doing something they love, doing something
really positive," says McLachlan.
This year Lilith Fair features an
even larger roster of performers. Artists confirmed to join McLachlan
on this year's tour include Natalie Merchant, Erykah Badu, Liz Phair,
Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Shawn Colvin, Bonnie Raitt, Me'Shell
Ndegeocello, Victoria Williams, Paula Cole, Beth Orton, Queen
Latifah, Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls and Sinead O'Connor. In
addition to the Main Stage, Lilith Fair will again incorporate Second
and Village Stages for both established and emerging artists, with an
emphasis being placed on offering an even broader range of
musicianship to this year's audience.
This year's tour will feature 57
North American dates, as the festival kicks off June 19th in
Portland, Oregon, and continues through August 31st. Lilith Fair is
scheduled to stop in many cities not visited in 1997, and will offer
multiple nights in various markets including Seattle, San Francisco,
Detroit, New York, Houston, Toronto, Milwaukee and Washington,
D.C.

CHARITABLE EFFORTS A KEY GOAL FOR
LILITH FAIR
Tour Aligns With National Non-Profit
Organizations and Donates $1.00 From Every Ticket to Local
Charities
The organizers of Lilith Fair have
announced a plan for charitable contributions in 1998 that promises
to up the ante on last year's $700,000 total. Tour sponsors will
participate in the effort, each company committing in advance to a
major tie-in with at least one national non-profit organization. In
addition, $1.00 from each ticket sold will be donated to a local
charity (in most cases the local charity will be a domestic violence
shelter).
The following is a partial list of
national non-profit organizations who will be recipients of Lilith
Fair's contributions and will also have booths in the Village area on
each Lilith Fair date:
The Breast Cancer
Fund
The Breast Cancer Fund is devoted to
creating a widespread public response to the breast cancer epidemic.
The fund is working nationally and internationally to find better
ways to detect, treat and ultimately prevent breast cancer - and to
make sure that the best possible medical and psychological care is
made available to women living with the disease. Representatives of
The Fund will be at each of the Lilith Fair concerts to distribute
breast exam cards and other educational material.
Rape, Abuse & Incest National
Network
The Rape, Abuse & Incest National
Network (RAINN) operates America's only national hotline for
survivors of sexual assault. The hotline - 800.656.HOPE - offers
free, confidential counseling and support 24 hours a day, from
anywhere in the country. In under four years of operation, the RAINN
network of 738 local rape crisis centers has already helped more than
19,000 victims of sexual assault. RAINN representatives will be at
each of the Lilith Fair shows to distribute their educational
material.
LIFEbeat
LIFEbeat, a not-for-profit HIV/AIDS
resource and awareness organization, is the American music industry's
response to the International HIV/AIDS crisis. Their presence on 1997
Lilith Fair enabled LIFEbeat to perform an unprecedented level of
HIV/AIDS outreach: Through partnerships with 37 local AIDS service
organizations, LIFEbeat was able to distribute condoms, brochures,
hotline cards and educational information at all 35 shows. With the
increased number of tour dates on Lilith Fair 1998, LIFEbeat hopes to
reach even more people with even more condoms, brochures, hotline
cards and educational information.
Planned Parenthood
The world's oldest and largest
voluntary reproductive health care organization, Planned Parenthood
is dedicated to the principle that every individual has the
fundamental right to choose when or whether to have children, and
believes in equal access to health care. Planned Parenthood further
believes that such self-determination will contribute to an
enhancement of the quality of life, strong family relationships, and
population stability. In 1998, Planned Parenthood will step up their
efforts to educate and mobilize 18 to 30-year-old people by launching
Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood. Vox will be present at Lilith
Fair 1998 to educate this generation about the very real threats to
reproductive freedom and family planning.

CORPORATE SPONSORS SHARE LILITH
FAIR'S COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
This year Lilith Fair has once again
joined with sponsors which share its commitment to entertain, benefit
and contribute. The 1998 sponsors include Biore, Excite, Levi's,
Royal Neighbors of America, Starbucks Coffee, Tower Records, VH1 and
Volkswagen of America. Following is a brief description of each
sponsor's involvement in 1998 Lilith Fair:
Biore
Through their second annual
sponsorship of Lilith Fair, Biore will once again confirm their
support of charities dedicated to serving women's needs by donating
funds totaling $100,000 to five national women's organizations. They
include: Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN); LIFEbeat;
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders
(ANAD); Wider Opportunities For Women (WOW); and International Rett
Syndrome Association.
Excite
Excite, Inc., (http://www.excite.com)
a free, web-based online-service, will be hosting the Lilith Fair
website at http://www.lilithfair.excite.com. In addition, there will
be an Excite Pavilion at every show to give concert-goers access to
both the Lilith Fair website and to CD-ROMS by Lilith Fair artists.
Excite has selected Girls, Inc. (http://www.girlsinc.org) as its
official non-profit. Excite will work with the group's Girlslink
program to teach young women about the internet. For more than fifty
years, the national youth organization, Girls, Inc., has been
dedicated to helping "every girl become smart, strong and
bold."
Levi's
Helping to further Lilith Fair's
dedication to new and emerging talent, Levi's is sponsoring the
Levi's/Lilith Fair Acoustic Talent Search. In 14 cities across Norht
America, an artist will be selected to win the prize of opening slot
on the Village Stage at their hometown's Lilith Fair show. In
addition, Levi's will host a talent search on their website
(levi.com). The winner of the on-line talent search will be flown to
Portland, Oregon to perform as the first artist on the Village Stage
at the June 19 opening day of Lilith Fair 1998. Levi's will also make
a charitable donation of clothing to women's shelters in select
cities across the country.
Royal Neighbors of
America
Royal Neighbors of America was
charted as a fraternal benefit society in 1895. It was founded by a
group of visionary women who were dedicated to offering insurance
benefits, fraternalism and volunteer opportunities to Americans
through women and their families. In the spirit of Lilith Fair, which
helps to build a sense of community by helping others, RNA will make
significant charitable contributions to Habitat for Humanity, an
organization for which RNA members have long since been supportive.
Also, RNA representatives will be at each Lilith Fair show to provide
concert-goers with free personalized life insurance
profiles.
Starbucks Coffee
Starbucks Coffee will produce a
limited edition Starbucks/Lilith Faircompilation CD. The CD, as well
as a selection of other Starbucks/Lilith Fair merchandise, will be
available through the summer at all North American Starbucks store
locations. Ten percent of the sales from all of the Starbucks/Lilith
Fair co-branded merchandise will be donated, in the United States, to
Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) and, in Canada, to the YWCA.
Also, Starbucks' traveling cafe will be featured in The Village at
every Lilith Fair show.
Tower Records
Tower Records will be the official
on-site Lilith Fair 1998 record retailer. Tower will stock CDs, books
and videos dedicated to women in music. Not only will Tower's booth
feature Lilith Fair artists' recordings, but it will also highlight
many titles from the other influential female artists. In addition,
dozens of titles will be available to sample at Tower's on-site
listening stations. Tower will donate 5% of its on-site sales to
LIFEbeat. Also, in various cities throughout the tour, Tower Records
will host in-store performances of Lilith Fair artists.
VH1 and MuchMusic
The official U.S. television network
for the 1998 Lilith Fair tour, VH1 will provide special daily Lilith
Fair music programming and behind-the-scenes news coverage throughout
the summer. In addition, VH1 Save The Music will have a table at each
of the Lilith Fair dates. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation is a
non-profit organization dedicated to restoring music education in
America's public schools. MuchMusic is the official Canadian network
for Lilith Fair.
Volkswagen of
America
In the spirit of Lilith Fair,
Volkswagen will donate a special edition New Beetle which will be
raffled to benefit The Breast Cancer Fund. The New Beetle will be on
display at the Volkswagen tent at each Lilith Fair show. Raffle
tickets for the car will be available at the Breast Cancer Fund tent
adjacent to the Volkswagen display. The raffle for the "Lilith Fair
Limited Edition" New Beetle will be held at the tour's conclusion.
All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to The Breast Cancer
Fund.

From the Lilith
Fair Website:
One thing most people have wanted to
see on Lilith Fair is their favourite local band. Well, that
opportunity is now a real possibility. Lilith Fair has partnered with
Levi's to announce a series of talent searches in fourteen cities.
Local acoustic acts, either all-female or fronted by women, are
invited to submit a two song tape to the local promoters for an
opportunity to be awarded a slot on one of the Lilith side stages in
their city. The deadlines are fast approaching in each city, so get
moving!
To qualify, a two-song demo must be
submitted by mail or in person to the local promoter. Check here for
the name and address to send material to. Please note that these
deadlines are very firm and all material must be into the local
offices by 4pm. Due to production restrictions, all artists must be
acoustic in nature (or able to perform acoustically) with a maximum
of three people in the group.
From the tapes submitted the local
promoter will select a number (for example 20 in Toronto) to perform
at the local showcase listed below. Artists that are selected to play
in the showcase will be contacted by the local promoter. From the
local showcase one artist will be chosen to perform at the Lilith
Fair show in that city.
The judging for each showcase will be
organized locally by the promoter working within guidelines that
Lilith has supplied each promoter. Generally the panel of judges will
consist of a representative from the promoter, a representative from
a local radio station, a local press person and somebody in the music
industry in that market. At each showcase the artists will each be
given the opportunity to perform one song for the judges and the
audience. Did we mention that each of the showcases below is open to
the public? Come on out and show your support for your favourite
local act.
The dates, cities, venues and
deadlines (in that order) for each showcase is listed
below:

Lilith Fair 1998
Looks Ahead, with Broader Artist Line-Up and Wider-Reaching
Tour
This Year's Artists
to Include Natalie Merchant, Missy Elliot, Sinead O'Connor and Erykah
Badu
Tour Kick-Off
Confirmed for June 19th, with Over 50 North American Shows Planned
and European Concerts to Follow
"We began with a
blank slate. Anything could have happened," says Sarah McLachlan,
founder of Lilith Fair. "We were blessed with a wonderful first
year." Hard work and good luck transformed McLachlan's idea into one
of the most important musical events of 1997. Artists took a leap of
faith in getting involved in the festival tour, the media embraced
the concept, and ticket-buying fans showed their support. Now, with a
solid foundation in place, plans for the Lilith Fair 1998 Tour are
well underway.
A Broader Musical
Scope
Lilith Fair 1998
will again feature a broad and eclectic mix of performers. Artists
already confirmed to join Sarah McLachlan on this summer's tour
include Natalie Merchant, Missy Elliot, Sinead O'Connor and Erykah
Badu, as well as returning musicians Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Sheryl
Crow, Bonnie Raitt and the Indigo Girls. Lilith Fair will also
feature Second and Village Stages for both established and emerging
artists, with an emphasis being placed on offering an even broader
range of musicianship to this year's audience. Expect regular updates
to Lilith Fair's list of 1998 performers.
A Longer Tour with
New Cities and International Concerts
This year's tour
will feature over 50 North American dates, as the festival kicks off
on June 19th in Portland, Oregon, and continues through August 31st.
Lilith Fair is also scheduled to stop in many cities not visited in
1997, and will offer multiple nights in numerous markets. In
addition, plans are underway to take this year's Lilith Fair tour to
Europe. Details will be announced soon.
Charitable Efforts
to Remain a Priority
Lilith Fair will
continue its regional and national charitable efforts. Lilith Fair
1997 raised over $700,000 for national and local charities, and the
tour's organizers are looking to build on that success. Once again
$1.00 from each ticket sold will be donated to a local charity - last
year, Sarah McLachlan (on behalf of Lilith Fair,) made a check
presentation to a local organization in each market visited. On the
national level, the tour continues its association with sponsors who
share in Lilith Fair's commitment to charity. Corporate sponsors
involved in last year's tour, Biore, Borders and Nine West, all made
large contributions to several national non-profit organizations on
behalf of Lilith Fair. More sponsors, charities and outreach efforts
will be announced in the weeks and months ahead.
