Quitting
while they're ahead: Summer '99 to close Lilith Fair - From
CNN
|
|
May 7,
1999
|
By Donna Freydkin
CNN Interactive Contributing Writer
(CNN) -- Last year, Lilith Fair
helped fledgling, unsigned New York-based singer-songwriter and
pianist Eden White land a record deal. This summer, after completing
the festival's third tour, driving force Sarah McLachlan will pull
down the tent.
"It was a privilege to play Lilith
Fair," says White. "It may be a smart thing to end it now. Lilith
Fair came out and made a statement and it was a good
thing."
Having helped launch such artists as
White, and being celebrated as much for its stellar lineups as for
its clean bathrooms and placid crowds, Lilith Fair is set to pack up,
after assembling its most impressive ensemble of artists to
date.
Lilith Fair has weathered criticism
for its ostensible lack of diversity to go about its blissful
celebration of female bonding. But festival mastermind Sarah
McLachlan has decided to bail after this summer's round, opting for
motherhood.
"We're all well into our 30s now,"
the 31-year-old Canadian singer announced at an April 27 news
conference, "and we decided we wanted to have babies. This will be
the last year for a good, long while. It could be three years, it
could be 10 years, it could be forever."
All aboard for the last bus
trip
Earlier this week, McLachlan
announced the lineup of the 40-date North American amphitheater tour.
Playing all 40 stops herself, she's to be joined by a rotating lineup
that includes root-sy popster Sheryl Crow; veteran rockers The
Pretenders; former 'Til Tuesday frontwoman Aimee Mann; hip-hop
sovereign Queen Latifah; indie darling Liz Phair; R&B looker
Monica; country ingenues Dixie Chicks and Kelly Willis; and popsters
Bijou Phillips and Sixpence None the Richer.
"I'd love to get to know or at least
meet some of the women, such as Sheryl or Sarah," says Leigh Nash of
Sixpence None the Richer, which is signed to play eight dates this
year. "I know we won't have time to develop friendships with anyone,
but I would love to get to know them."
Again this summer, Lilith Fair,
Ozzfest and H.O.R.D.E. fill the vacuum left over by the grandparent
of summer festivals, the ill-fated Lollapalooza, on hiatus until
2000. But McLachlan insists that from the outset she'd planned to run
Lilith Fair only for three years. And she says she's enough of a
control freak to not relinquish command of the tour to anyone
else.
Nevertheless, for emerging artists
and groups such as Sixpence None the Richer -- which has the adorable
hit single "Kiss Me" in heavy radio rotation nationwide -- Lilith is
an incredible opportunity to play for huge crowds drawn by the likes
of McLachlan, Crow, the Indigo Girls and Luscious Jackson.
"It's very encouraging to be
included," says Sixpence's Nash. "Last year, we played one date in
Nashville and it was our first experience. But in light of the
popularity of 'Kiss Me,' it worked out again this year. And it's
amazing to be on such a great bill."
From Lilith to
label
If you work it right and your luck
pans out, Lilith has amazing payoff -- as musician Eden White can
attest. She landed a record deal on the strength of one performance
at a New York's Jones Beach venue.
"I would absolutely do it again if I
had the chance," says White. "As a result of Lilith Fair, I got
signed to a label. My CD ('This is the Way') came out nationally and
internationally. Billy Joel came to one of my shows. And all that is
the result of meeting and being seen by people at Lilith."
Last year, White was one of two
performers to win a nationwide contest to perform at Lilith Fair. Her
demo was chosen from a pool of thousands, and she and 19 other
finalists auditioned to play at the kickoff concert. White and the
band Antigone Rising came out on top, and ended up performing for an
audience estimated at 8,000.
White, who says she knows her place
in the pecking order, says she was hesitant to fraternize with top
acts such as McLachlan and Tracy Bonham, but says all the performers
made her feel instantly welcome. And while she may not be having
slumber parties with the A-list, White says being a part of the
festival had its value.
"Sarah was nothing less than
amazingly gracious to me and really supportive," says White. "I don't
want to exaggerate about being buddy-buddy with everyone. But to me
it was enough to be exposed to it and be in the company of these
people. Lilith Fair made a point of opening up to local artists and
giving them opportunities."
Sharing the stage with McLachlan at
the end of the show was a revelation for an unsigned singer who was
about to give up on making music.
"You see Sarah on stage and feel like
a freshman -- and believe me, I know my place. I was standing in the
wings during the encore at Jones Beach, and Tracy pulled me out on
stage. I held hands with Tracy and Sarah, and I realized that I was
standing between two people who had achieved so much success," says
White. "It really showed me that anything is attainable when you
really love what you do.
"That was the one moment when I knew
it was really real."
Chanteuses and
charity
The 1999 Lilith Fair again dedicates
itself to introducing new talent through a national search. Winning
female-fronted acoustic acts in each of 16 United States cities are
to be booked as openers on the Lilith Fair Village Stage.
And for the first time this year,
Lilith Fair is holding an MP3 talent search, with all entrants having
their music posted on the Lilith home page in MP3, a format for
storing audio files on computer. The winner is to be flown to Chicago
to open the show there.
As usual, each show is to include the
"village area" with booths operated by retailers and nonprofit
organizations including the Breast Cancer Fund; LIFEbeat; Planned
Parenthood; and the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network
(RAINN). And in keeping with the good-music-and-good-works themes of
Liliths past, local charities are to receive $1 from each ticket
sold. Since 1997, Lilith Fair has donated almost $2 million to
national and regional nonprofit organizations.
The festival is scheduled to open its
tour July 8 on McLachlan's home turf -- Vancouver, British Columbia
-- and is to end August 31 in Edmonton,
Alberta.

Lilith Fair
'99 may be its last - From Jam

By KAREN BLISS -- Jam! Music
Sarah McLachlan will lay Lilith Fair
to rest in North America after this summer's tour, but the
female-fronted music festival might continue in other parts of the
world.
"We'd always intended for it to be a
three-year campaign," says agent Marty Diamond of New York's Little
Big Man Booking. "That was always Sarah and the team's ambition was
to do three years. We're going to be doing Europe and Australia this
year and then we will see next year what will happen with
those."
The final itinerary and line-up for
the North American tour will be announced April 27 at a press
conference in New York.
There will reportedly be 11 acts
performing at each date, under exactly the same premise as the
previous two years, to bring established and up-and-coming female
artists together. "When it works you don't fix it," says Diamond, who
confirms, "There will be few dates in Canada this summer."
Meanwhile, two follow-up albums to
last year's double-platinum Lilith Fair: A Celebration Of Women In
Music album, will be released on Nettwerk/EMI May
18.
The two separate CDs, Lilith Fair
Volume 2 and Lilith Fair Volume 3, will include live tracks from
1998's performers such as Sinead O'Connor, Queen Latifah, Luscious
Jackson, Natalie Merchant, Cowboy Junkies, Morcheeba, Holly Cole, Liz
Phair, Wild Strawberries, Sixpence None The Richer, Chantal Kreviazuk
and Angelique Kidjo.
"Ash (Sood), Sarah's husband (and
drummer) is the executive producer of the records and obviously Sarah
had final say," says George Maniatis, Nettwerk Productions VP of
A&R and marketing. "All the people involved with Lilith Fair --
Marty (Diamond), Terry (McBride, Sarah's manager and label head),
(Lilith Fair partner) Dan Fraser and Sarah have input, but Ash was
the one that went through all the tapes. He listened to everything.
Every show was recorded."
Initially, there was supposed to be
three albums but it was whittled down to a more manageable two. There
is apparently no thematic link to the artists or song sequence found
on each album.
Watch for a special promotion with
Ticketmaster, whereby fans who order the CDs early get first crack at
Lilith Fair tickets.

Sarah
McLachlan To Announce Plans For Lilith Fair '99 By Month's
End - From MTV
|
|
April 2,
1999
|
As the summer touring season starts to gear up, Lilith Fair
organizers have scheduled an April 27 press conference in New York
City to announce the lineup and itinerary for the third (and last)
North American edition of the femme music fest.
For the meeting, Lilith founder Sarah
McLachlan will be joined by several, as-yet-unnamed artists who have
already signed on for this summer's tour. McLachlan will also discuss
plans for this year's Acoustic Talent Search contest.
Last year's Lilith Fair featured a
roster that included Sheryl Crow, Paula Cole, Missy Elliott and
Erykah Badu, among others, as organizers sought to bring a more
musically encompassing show than that of the tour's inaugural
outing.
And if the continued sales of
McLachlan's 1997 album, "Surfacing," are any indication, fans are
ready for their Lilith fix. "Surfacing" remains in Billboard's Top 30
after more than a year and a half on the charts.

Sheryl Crow
May Join Lilith - From music365
|
|
April 2,
1999
|
SHERYL CROW looks like she will be joining ALANIS MORISSETTE, LAURYN
HILL and more on the American Lilith Tour for its final outing this
summer.
Though CROW has been a supporter of
SARAH MCLACHLAN'S all-female festival since its inception, she has
only played two dates in the tour's history. Last year she had to
cancel her appearance as she was working on her 'The Globe Sessions'
album. She plans on making up for it however by playing every date on
the festival's calendar this summer.
CROW has been a very busy so far this
year. In addition to the Lilith Fair dates, she is in the midst of
producing STEVIE NICK's next album as well as contemplating the
release of an album of acoustic work.
No dates for this year's Lilith have
yet been set. Neither have any other acts been confirmed. Last year's
eclectic line-up included NATALIE MERCHANT, ERYKAH BADU, IMANI
COPPOLA and QUEEN LATIFAH.
Sheryl Crow finds it ironic that she's so closely associated with
Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair tour when, in fact, she's only played
on two Lilith dates. But she'll be alleviating that this summer, when
Crow joins the final Lilith outing for its entire summer
run.
"[McLachlan] has been very
smart about it," says Crow, who's currently in the midst of her own
headlining tour. "She kind of calculated the shelf life of something
like this and determined it could only last three or four years
before it went sour. People are still excited about it, so it'll be
nice to go out and play for that kind of audience."
Crow was slated to play a few dates
during last year's Lilith tour but had to cancel because she was
working on her latest album, The Globe Sessions, and didn't have a
band together at the time.
"You really don't want to just go out
and throw something together for those gigs," Crow explains. "Sarah
was amazingly understanding. She said, 'You just have to take care of
yourself. You can't let the career run you.' Also, she said, 'There
are only 1,000 other girls waiting for someone to drop
out.'"
Lilith is just one of a number of
projects Crow has going for the remainder of the years. She's
co-producing Stevie Nicks' next album, with four songs completed and
more work slated for May and June. The two musicians are talking
about going on tour together later in the summer, and Crow is also
contemplating some solo acoustic dates as well.
Meanwhile, an announcement is
expected soonon the rest of the Lilith lineup as well as its
schedule. Alanis Morissette, Lauryn Hill, and the Indigo Girls are
all rumored to be playing some dates on this year's outing, though
former Lilithite Jewel will be doing her own tour.

Lilith Fair
To Partner With RAINN On Potentially Final Tour - From
LiveDaily
|
|
Jan. 29,
1999
|
Tour organizers indicate that 1999 may be final Lilith Fair outing,
three live Lilith collections and a live Sarah McLachlan album are
set for mid-99 release.
The Lilith Fair will return for at
least one more outing in 1999, with organizers taking a wait-and-see
attitude toward the possibility of future outings. ''After this
summer, we might take a holiday for a year, or four years, or
permanently,'' tour co-founder Terry McBride, manager of co-founder
Sarah McLachlan, told USA Today recently. The tour will once again
bring representatives from Tori Amos' RAINN organization
[www.rainn.org] along to disseminate information about
RAINN's national network of rape and domestic crisis
centers.
The Lilith Fair, the brainchild of
McBride and McLachlan, surprised many in the concert industry when
its vision of producing a day-long show of female artists quickly
became one of the hottest-selling tours of 1997. Up to that point,
conventional wisdom among concert promoters was that female artists
needed male-fronted acts on the same bill to move tickets.
The 1998 edition of the tour played
more and larger venues, including a stadium stop at Los Angeles' Rose
Bowl. McLachlan, who began the tour after doing an extensive US tour
of her own, spoke of being drained by the combined responsibilities
of organizing and headlining the massive undertaking of what amounted
to a travelling city. At that point, industry rumors began pointing
to various scenarios for the tour's future, including a shutdown
after 1999 or a possible hand-off of the franchise to another kindred
act, such as the Indigo Girls.
''Lilith Fair is such a big
undertaking - you're moving a small village of people every single
day. We're managers and artists, not promoters. Putting on a festival
shouldn't dominate our lives,'' McBride said in USA Today.
The 1999 tour will launch in Europe
before moving into the North American leg, which will start in
Vancouver, BC on July 8th and end on August 31st. From there, the
tour will end with a string of Australian dates.
RAINN (the Rape And Incest National
Network) has had a presence on every Lilith Fair tour to date. The
Tori Amos-founded group connects victims of sexual abuse to local
crisis centers via a national access number (800-656-HOPE). On the
tour, RAINN will maintain a crisis hotline information booth and
distribute information about local member centers at each tour
stop.
Sonicnet reports that three separate
Lilith Fair albums, comprised of material recorded on the 1998 tour,
will be released in 1999 in addition to a live Sarah McLachlan album.
The first two Lilith collections will feature individual artist
performances and be released in May to coincide with ticket sales for
the tour. The third, a collection of jams that often closed the
featured sets on the tour, will be released in early July to coincide
with the launch of the tour. The McLachlan album, which will include
the radio hit I Will Remember You, is set for release in late April,
according to the Sonicnet report.

Lilith Fair
Takes a Break

Organizers have announced that the Lilith Fair will take a break
following the 1999 jaunt, but have definitely not ruled out future
tours. This year's Lilith Fair will launch June 11 in Europe, and
then return to North America for two months, July 8 - Aug. 31. The
tour may possibly head to Australia and New Zealand in
November.

Last Year
for Lilith Fair?

Jan. 22,
1999
|
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Lilith Fair may soon be the stuff of
history.
"After this summer, we might take a
holiday for a year, or four years, or permanently," said Terry
McBride, who co-founded the all-women's musical caravan with singer
Sarah McLachlan and is her manager.
Ms. MacLachlan will headline at this
summer's fair, which begins July 8 in Vancouver, British
Columbia.
"Lilith Fair is such a big
undertaking -- you're moving a small village of people every single
day. We're managers and artists, not promoters. Putting on a festival
shouldn't dominate our lives," Ms. McBride said in Friday's USA
Today.
