Review written by Josh who e-mailed me his review, as well as some pictures! Thanks Josh!

These are the things that I remember in chronological order. We got to the Civic Stadium at about 11:00 and there were already 100 people waiting. The sun was really hot, but some guys at an Eclipse(tm) booth were giving away free samples.

By about 1:00 there were already what looked like thousands of people. There was some guy holding a sign that said to repent or go to hell. Ha. A sign on the gates said this Lilith Fair show was being filmed as part of a documentary. Cool. We squeezed in as soon as they opened the gates and ended up in the fourth row!

There were lots of booths with CD's, clothing, and free stuff. There was a huge mainstage with murals on both sides. The artwork looked like it was done by Sarah. The stadium was almost filled, and I would estimate there were around ten thousand people total.

Here's my band-by-band review of the concert:

1. Stephanie Schneideman-Sounded great, but I only got to hear one song because we were taking turns saving our fourth-row seats at the mainstage.

2. Murmurs-They just had vocals and acoustic guitars. Their lyrics seemed angry, not that that's a bad thing. They sounded good but would sound better with a full band IMHO.

3. Bijou Phillips-I'm impressed! She rocks! During her show she mentioned that everyone had sunglasses and she didn't have a pair. After her show, I immediately bought her album and some extra sunglasses. I went to get an autograph and gave her the sunglasses. She seemed a bit surprised at first, but she was seen wearing them later in the day! Wow!

4. Beth Orton-Missed it. Bummer. Heard she was good.

5. Eden AKA-Missed it.

6. Luscious Jackson-They sounded great as far as I know. I have only heard one of their songs before. Sarah Mclachlan joined them for the song "Ladyfingers"

7. Sixpence None The Richer-I must admit I'm proud of them. I've known about them for years now, and they've finally made it big. The crowd went wild when they played the radio hit "Kiss Me".

8. Sandra Bernhard-I'd never heard her before either. She was a riot.

9. Mya-I've never been into R&B-until now. They had the crowd jumping in no time. But wait, there's more! She did some tap-dancing, too! Cool!

10. Sandra again-'nuff said.

11. Liz Phair-I'm a big Liz Phair fan. Her performance was great, but IMHO her microphone volume wasn't up loud enough for her vocal style. Sarah Mclachlan joined her for a song. This was her last concert for a while because she's recording a new album.

12. Sheryl Crow-I'm impressed again! She immediately had the whole crowd rocking. I even noticed people on the tops of buildings outside the stadium listening in. She sounds great live!

13. Sarah Mclachlan-I hate to say it, but Sarah has evolved from singer-songwriter to superstar. She came on stage just as it was starting to get dark. The stage had background murals, blacklights and even a giant mirrorball. The crowd went wild. She was wearing blue sparkly pants and a beige hat. She sounded incredible as usual. She opened with "Possession", and her encore was "Angel", performed with just the piano. People in the crowd lit lighters and glowsticks.

The concert finished with all the artists coming on stage together and singing "Put A Little Love In Your Heart". I'd love to get my hands on a recording of THAT! The whole thing was so groooooooovious it almost had a dreamlike quality. Before we knew it, it was over. The entire event took eight hours, but it seemed more like two or three. That's my review. Send comments/questions/flames to josh@digisys.net. :-}

(snip)

Luscious Jackson---very good band, alot of fun. I didn't know the band that well but reconized 2-3 songs of theirs.

Sandra Bernhard---she came out twice for about 15 minutes each time with a stand up comic skit. She was hilarious but could easily offend some with her humor....WARNING if you are taking a child to the Lilith Fair and she is performing you may want to walk out for a few minutes, she uses profanity. It didnt bother me a bit, but might bug some.

Mya---cute but R&B isn't my fav. She had a lot of young fans in the crowd that sounded like squealing pigs.....LOL....but she is an awesome tap dancer and her dancers are very in sync with each other and the music. At the end of her performance she had about 12 young girls come up on stage and dance and sing with her. They were all so happy. A couple of them were sitting next to us and I know that this will be the biggest moment of their lives for a while. Kudos to Mya!!!

Liz Phair---I didn't really know who she was and only reconized one song. She is very energetic though and got into her music.

Sheryl Crow----what can I say??? Its Sheryl Crow!!!! I didn't know she had cut her hair though....it looks like Sarah's LOL I thought it was cute She played most of her #1 hits and interacted and joked with the audience, and had us participate too.

and of course... Sarah

She was wonderful. She wore a cowboy hat out on stage though, and when she had come out before to say Hi and perform with Luscious Jackson she had been in a real cute sundress. Anyway she sang a bunch of stuff off of Surfacing and some old stuff too. Of course she sang Ice Cream and had us all pitch in. She did Angel as an Encore and then everyone that had performed that day came out and sang "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" The whole audience was singing, it sounded so cool.

Our venue did not allow water bottles in but you could buy water for a discounted price of $3.00 a bottle!!! Don't you just hate venues sometimes!! And we were allowed cameras but the biggest beef I had was on the website it states that no cameras were allowed, so we didn't bring any. As we are sitting in line they anounce to us that we can bring them in as long as they are personal cameras. Talk about the rush to find a mini mart that sold the disposible kind!!! Then the security staff would only allow us to come up and take one photo at a time and only gave us about 5 seconds to point and click. It was a pain in the a$$!!! I do hope my pictures turned out. I have one that has a security guards finger in it...he shoved his hand in front of my camera because he thought I was taking more than one. Oh well just doing his job I suppose.

Overall an excellent concert! However, I was disappointed that Beth Orton only had 20 minutes to perform.!!!!!!She has a rare talent and I was shocked to see her perform on the second stage. She should have been on the main stage along with Sixpence (also on the second stage). Luscious Jackson was a disappointment and gave me a headache. They should have been on the 2nd stage. Liz what's going on here??!! Whatsup with the soft ooogie sound. Where ever did that hard rocking babe go?????

Lilith did a great job in presenting a diverse collection of musical talent. The stage people were incredible and very organized especially since this was only their 4th show. There were very short intermissions. Someone is doing an awesome job behind the scenes.

Sarah and Sheryl were incredible.... as usual. Sarah is incredible live...one of the few artists that sound better live than on cd ( good marketing with the live release.

Please let Beth Orton play more!

Beth come back to Portland so we can hear you!!! You rock babe!!! Portland loves you!
