Review written by Shelby on the FTE Mailing List (includes little of each Shoreline show)

(snip)

Now, I guess I should add something about the Shoreline shows. Tuesday didn't seem to be as good as Wednesday, even with us arriving much later than expected. We heard the end of Tekla's set as we walked by the gate. I heard Cibo Matto's set from near Nettwerk's booth...sounded great. Today, we got a much closer spot to see Beth Orton perform who really mixed up her set. She was lovely and witty, more so than yesterday. The Murmurs quickly got onstage within 2-3 min. of Beth leaving the stage. I heard the first two songs, as Fred & I made our way to the Main Stage for Luscious Jackson.

LJ put on a fabulous set which was different from yesterday's. I wish someone else would mix things up a bit (hint Sarah!!). Sarah came out for "Ladyfingers"...sang and danced around. No Sheryl. Bonnie Raitt was the surprise guest.

I didn't see Mya's performance (watched it yesterday). She did the same setlist from what I heard while in the Village area talking to all the fumblers. I think she has a good presence and will improve with age. LF is a good learning experience for her.

The Pretenders seriously ROCK!! Chrissie was in fine form! Tuesday was their first day at Lilith and she mentioned flying in and not having time to arrange any collaborations. I knew something would happen Wed, and it did. Chrissie stated that being at Lilith was turning her into a nicer person. I really loved her banter between songs...much funnier than Sandra's 10 min standup spots (btw, Sandra did the same material for both shows!). Pretenders set was entirely different than Tuesday's...never did "Brass in Pocket" :(

Sheryl Crow's set was the same for the first 3 songs than entirely different at that point. She seemed more into the show this evening and that was the case with most performers. Bonnie came out for "Every Day is a Winding Road"...didn't know most of the lyrics. Sheryl talked a lot to the audience. She hadn't seen "Big Daddy" then launched into the much discussed GNR cover. Btw, Sheryl uses three videoscreens on the stage for an added visual enhancement...stuff shown could be used at a rave show.

Sarah was terrific! She was much more interactive with the audience, as they were with her. This lady down front threw a bra at her. Sarah put up to her chest and stated, "Thanks, it's nearly my size." She told us about the woman who flashed her at the Gorge. Sarah perfomed the same exact setlist. She told everyone she gave a crappy performance the first night, which I have agree it wasn't up to the Sarah standard. I still find it strange to do the glowstick during "Hold On", just not the same as "Witness." Bonnie sang "Angel." Their voices blended much better than last year's Emmylou's duet. I knew Bonnie would be out, but I never thought it would be "Angel."

The encore was really amusing. KFOG DJ was talking about this evening on our way to dinner. The band scrambled to get the correct music and most the singers flubbed the words. Nice to see a completely impromtu performance onstage! :)

Interesting things seen at Lilith:

Tuesday: Beth Orton, Brian Minato and David Sinclair walking around without any notice. Two VERY drunk fumblers. Sean Penn & Robin Wright-Penn had been in our seats before we got there (later saw them leave the backstage area). All coed bathrooms....scared quite a few men - including Paul, in spite of all our encouragement :) Mya at Denny's while we were talking about the show, showing photos & videos from last year's rumbles.

Wednesday: Mirah's attempt to give Ash and later Brian a glowstix. She got an A for effort in my book! Trojan condoms, handed out while talking by the Nettwerk tent. Video documentary booth set up to interview people...Mirah did it, but alas I skipped by it. Paul trying to get his comp. tix from the box office...luckily Edward was able to help him out with a Row I seat in the center orchestra section! A near fight in the stands between two group of lesbians...don't know what started it. Michael's interesting experience with two drunk ladies after the show, who were lusting after him and his 15 year old cutie nephew.

Review written by Emily, who e-mailed me her review! Thanks Emily!

Every performer was full of energy, and a joy to watch. Sheryl Crow, The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde), and Sarah McLachlan all interacted with the audience creating a much more personal show. Sarah talked about the pants she was wearing, light blue with rhinestones, she said that she loved the pants but if she was walking down the street wearing them, people would probably think her a freak, so she loves these concerts where she can play "dress up" it was a great concert, I loved it.
