Celebrities (that's what LA's all about, right? *winks*) - well, they were there in force supposedly, but we didn't spot too many sitting near us in 2nd row on the floor. Sylvester Stallone was there, and Tara was sitting in B6. Tekla was also wandering around on the floor, and there was a woman behind us who looked like Sandra Bullock. Beth Orton and Dave Sinclair walked up & down the tunnel a few times, and Brian Minato could be found relaxing inconspicuously at the Lilith Centre booth from time to time... :)

Sarah came out for Luscious' Ladyfingers as expected, Mya did her R&B routine, the Dixie Chicks won the crowd over, and the Pretenders rocked, though not at the same incredible energy level displayed at the 2nd Shoreline show, nor did Chrissie engage in as much banter...

Collaborations abounded much to the delight of the audience... Sheryl was especially in gear, with Beth joining her on a couple of songs, completely unrehearsed (I'm a fan of spontaneous get-togethers, personally believe all the little miscues and surprises add to the charm...{g}), Ash came out yet again to help out, and of course the big surprise guest of the evening, Stevie Nicks, accompanied Sheryl on "Strong Enough"! Sweet... :)

And as if that wasn't enough, Sheryl made an unexpected reappearance harmonizing with Sarah, accompanied by the touching string strains of her violinist and cellist (the latter being Matt Brubeck, son of Dave) - it was such a beautiful version of Angel (even better than Sarah's rendition with Bonnie Raitt at the Shoreline, and than Emmylou Harris' at last year's Liliths) that I hope this debut will not be the last on this year's tour...as Bonnie did at the Shoreline Angel duet, Sheryl displayed her emotional response to Sarah's soul-touching vocal phrasing at the end of Angel... :)

Finally, a sizeable gathering of artists and band members (noticeably larger than at Coors Amphitheatre capped off the evening at the Rose Bowl with a rousing rendition of "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" - Sarah, Bijou Phillips, Luscious Jackson, Sheryl and Chrissie sang the solo verses, with Tara in tow along with almost everyone for the chorus - at one point Sean A. played a guitar solo quickly followed by Dave S.

IT WAS THE BOMB!!! What was cool about Lilith Fair is that the artists appeared at different times and in different places so it was pretty likely that you'd get to see whoever you wanted if you just coordinated your time. When I went, Beth Orton, Cibo Matto, Noella Hutton were the understars who turned out to be unexpected suprises. Noella Hutton had one of those cigarette and whisky voices and her songs were bluesy and she looked sexy up there on stage, making goo goo eyes at her background singers. Equally as well was Cibo Matto, an East Coast Jersey band with a guitar player who looked like Sean Lennon. They sang a crazy ecclectic mixture of Asian spy and hip hop music and all their songs seemed to be related to food. Lastly, I already knew Beth Orton was an aspiring Sarah McLachlan vocalist, but she proved herself in person and held her own, even when she later joined Sheryl Crow to sing a song. And guess who else appeared on stage with Sheryl? Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. The crowd went wild. They sang one of Sheryl's songs--"Strong Enough". Finally, my girl, my goddess, my top dog Sarah McLachlan came out, much to the crowd's and my own personal delight. She opened with "Possession", and sang all of her hits, and grooved and danced on the stage with an air of grace an easy-spiritedness. Seeing her live gives one a sense of the deeply meaningful lyrics writted in her songs---esp "Building A Mystery" and "Angel", which Sheryl came out to sing with Sarah. Sarah's songs are like poems, whereas Sheryl's are like stories: Sarah's are contemplative and deep and mirky with emotion, and Sheryl's are a bit more clear, and straightfoward and easy to figure out what the story is. Anyways, Sarah was really in command. She had a very relaxed stage presence; it was like she came to lead 25,000 of us in a gigantic sing-a-long. I loved her--she's an all-around beautiful person...I never thought I'd say this, but Thank Canada for her. Other highlights were Mya, who came out and tapdanced, and those crazy-ass, musically acrobatic Dixie Chicks (who have a fine banjo player). The Pretenders, to my friends and I were boring, except for the 1 or 2 songs we barely knew; but watching Mya, a much more-but not necesarrily better liked- familiar face was alright.

At the end, when Sarah made her little disapperance and then reappearance, she sang "Angel" with Sheryl, like I mentioned earlier, and then she invited all the other singers and their musicians to sing "Put a Lil Love in Your Heart". We all sang, young and old alike, and burned our bras-no, just kidding!-and danced in the aisles and praised Sarah and co. when they finished. I loved that part the best because it really gave a feeling of a fair and of female unity and strength and triumph. Sarah must rejoice at the conclusion of each and every Lilith Fair. It must be a really triumphant feeling for her to know that she created feelings like these for many women and in turn has become an inspiration and a legend-like Lilith-in her own way. Even if Sarah does leave, I will return to Lilith Fair annually because of the oppurtunity of chillin with so many cool and beautiful women, young and old, famous and fanatical, inspired and carefree.
