There are not even words to describe
how awesome Thursday night's show was. To me, it was 100 times better
than shows before. Maybe that's because this is the last Lilith Fair,
at least for awhile. Last year we didn't get to the show until 5:00.
This year we were bound and determined to be there early. We got in
about 3:30 and it was great to have time to just walk around and
check out all the tents/booths. We got pretty good lawn seats where
we could actually see the whole stage without any poles obstructing
our view. The absolute highlight of the entire evening for me was
seeing K's Choice on the Second Stage. They kicked A**!!! If anyone
out there doesn't own one of their albums (they have a new one coming
out soon, they said) BUY THEM! There was a pretty good crowd for K's
Choice and you could tell by crowd response that most everyone had
been drawn in by the song "I'm Not An Addict". When she started
singing it everyone went wild. Very cool. The Indigo Girls had them
come out and play during their set too. Awesome. The Main Stage
started with Deborah Cox. No offense to anyone who loves her music
but I wasn't really into it. That was kind of our time for chatting
with each other and getting some of the VERY EXPENSIVE BEER! When
Dixie Chicks came out - Wow! I don't know a whole lot of their music
but they were a lot of fun and really got everyone going. Indigo
Girls were GREAT but, sad to say, I didn't know a whole lot of the
music they played. Then again, I'm not their hugest fan, I'm sure.
Galileo was a big favorite, though, and Get Out the Map. I also liked
Love's Recovery (I think this was the one K's Choice joined in on -
not sure though). And, of course, their big close - Closer to Fine.
Sheryl Crow rocked the house! We were up and dancing the entire time,
along with pretty much everyone else. She played all the favorites
and a couple of new ones. It was interesting that such a big artist
closed with a new song. But she was awesome. What I really loved this
year was how the artists interchanged sets so much. I mean, during
almost every artist's time on stage, she had another band/singer come
out. Sarah came out and sang "Strong Enough" with Sheryl and that was
absolutely incredible! ANd then Sheryl came out and sang "Angel" with
Sarah during her set. Sarah was amazing, beautiful and mezmerizing,
as usual. She sang a lot of the favorites and it was cool to see the
mirrorball come down when she sang "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy". She
always has a way with the audience. The only thing that threatened to
ruin it was a group of girls in front of us having a big old make-out
session, and then taking their shirts and bras off. I got the
impression they were really loaded, especially when one of them
started cussing really loud during "Angel". Talk about ruining the
mood. Plus, who really needs to see that? At least don't stand up
right in front of me and ruin my view! Yikes. I guess they think that
maybe we haven't seen that before and need to. Whatever floats your
boat. Overall this was a fantastic show. I wouldn't have missed it
for the world. The last song was sang by every single artist, and
watching these women (and men) on stage, you get the impression that
it's one big party and you just want to be a part of it. Thank you
Sarah and all the incredible artists, for letting us take a small
part in that.

'Twas a Night to Remember. .
.
That is a line from one of Deborah
Cox's songs called "September." I think it sums up the whole evening
at Lilith. It was my first one, and I hope there are more in the
future, despite the rumors that this is the last year for Lilith. I
had 11th row tickets (THANK YOU, NIKEA AT SOUTHPAW!!!!), and arrived
about 5 minutes into Deborah Cox's set, after driving through 2 hours
of traffic and running around the theatre to find the will call
window. I advise you to arrive early, as the show starts on time and
stays with the schedule. The seats were awesome, and so were the
people around my friend and me.
Deborah's set:
Sentimental (from album 1, "Deborah Cox")
Who Do U Love (from album 1)
September (from album 2, "One Wish" - just announced platinum on the
day of this concert!)
It's Over Now (from album 2)
??? (Stevie Wonder cover song - don't know the title, sorry)
True Colors (Cyndi Lauper)
Nobody's Supposed to Be Here (from album 2, Hex Hector Dance Mix - ~4
min. version)
As I mentioned, I was running to the
will call window when Deborah was coming out on stage. Her entrance
sounded similar to the R Kelly tour she did earlier this year. At
that tour, Deborah pranced/danced her way out to the front of the
stage while a mixture of guitars and R&B sounds and lots of drums
wailed. The crowd cheered and Deborah broke into "Sentimental." Too
bad I missed it. The next song was "Who Do U Love", not the David
Morales version, just the album version. Oh, did I mention? Deborah
had a LIVE band with her!!!!! Read: guitars, drums, keyboards, and 2
backup singers/dancers!!! No tapes!!! Gone are the days when she will
use the recorded tracks, although one of them could be used to her
advantage, I'll explain later.
"September" was next. I don't know
why this song wasn't released as a single. I have a promo 12" vinyl
of "September" with the album version, an instrumental, and the
vocals. My understanding is that it was supposed to be released, but
possibly the success of "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" delayed it
indefinitely. Perhaps Arista could reconsider - it's not too
late.
"It's Over Now" followed. Deborah
introduced the song by asking if anyone ever wanted to tell someone
that a relationship was over. Deb did a great job.
Deb then said she wanted to sing a
couple of songs by some artists that inspired her while she was
growing up. The first was the Stevie Wonder cover. It had a great
tempo and Deb sounded good.
The next cover, Cyndi Lauper's "True
Colors" was amazing, awesome, astounding, . . .WOW!!! I hope that a
future Lilith Fair CD contains this cut. Deb held onto one of the
notes near the end for the longest time. Her band members were
throwing towels at her feet while she held that note. She must have
that Kenny G talent - breathing in through the nose and out through
the mouth. I don't know what her secret is, but Deb gave true emotion
to this song. Lilith truly has color to it in the diversity of the
audience. I wish I had snuck in a tape recorder or my video camera so
I could hear/see this again. Someone in the front row was videotaping
other acts - I thought this wasn't allowed.
Finally - the newest queen of dance
divas sings THE SONG: the Hex Hector version of "Nobody's Supposed to
Be Here!!" The regular R&B version spent 14 weeks on Billboard's
R&B singles chart earlier this year. The 8 min. dance version is
still being played to enthusiastic listeners in dance clubs across
the U.S.A. (If you want to see this Deb, e-mail me :+)) However,
because of the widely known awful acoustics at the World Theatre, I
didn't recognize this song when the band started playing it. For this
song only, I wish Deb could've used the Hex Hector tapes. But it was
still a blast to dance to, along with many other brave souls. Most of
the crowd was still at the other stages. I think Deb looked at me for
a bit while I was dancing. Thank you for doing the dance version,
Deb!!! The other Lilith reviews on this web page said the dance
version wasn't done. Hopefully, future Lilith fans will hear the
Nobody's. . .dance version and True Colors.
And then Deb was done. So quick. Now
just a memory.
Deb did return with other Lilith
performers for two more cast songs. One at the very end and one after
Indigo Girls, I think. She sang a few lines solo for each
song.
Deb looked like she was having a
blast - dancing, singing, just having a good time. I think she fits
in so much better here than she did with Foxy Brown and NAS on the
now-cancelled R Kelly tour. Till next time, Deb, take
care!!!
I'm not as familiar with Sheryl Crow
and Sarah McLachlan, as I am with Deb, but here's an incomplete,
unordered list of the songs they did:
SC:
Everyday is a Winding Road - the crowd was dancing!!
Strong Enough
If It Makes You Happy
My Favorite Mistake
some song with Hood in the lyrics
SM:
Angel
Building a Mystery
Adia
I Will Remember You
They both did much more than this,
but it's all I can remember. BTW, Indigo Girls and Dixie Chicks both
rocked the fair as well, as did Susan Tedechi. All in all a really
great show. Everyone will have a blast. It was all about the music
and nothing else. No egos, show stealers, nothing.
Enjoy!!!
BTW, did I mention that there were
security guards guarding the men's bathroom? I even saw a girl trying
to bribe the guard with a $20 bill to let her in.
