Review written by Dave
Sarman, who e-mailed me his
review! Thanks Dave!
My wife and I arrived at Canterbury
Park at about 1:30 and the gates were to open at 2:00. We were both
amazed at the line of people to get in!! It was a great day - hot,
humid and steamy - a great day for an all day outdoor
concert!
This was the first Fair for both of
us and we were really glad we got to see it before it is gone
forever. Canterbury Park is a horse racing track, so everyone sat on
the infield - no bleachers or seats. This was great because everyone
brought blankets, lawn chairs, etc and it really lent to the
community atmosphere of the place! We carved out a pretty decent spot
and sat down in the hot sun. I went to get a couple of beers for us
(would have liked something a little more tasty than bland Michelob,
but corporate sponsorship is a necessary evil, I guess) and when I
got back, my wife was joining in a card game with some concert goers
in front of us. Very nice and friendly people all around us which was
nice.
Deborah Cox played a nice set. This
woman has some great pipes and impressed me. I'm not a big fan of her
or that type of music, but I enjoyed it.
Dixie Chicks were next. I knew one or
two of their songs, but my wife is a bigger country music fan than I
am, so she was more pumped for them than I was. They actually were
the biggest surprise of the night for me. These women can PLAY! A
refreshing change from the typical female country star that now it is
more important to bare their midriff than to play great music. Very
talented! They knew how to get the crowd involved and looked like
they were having a blast! I think we will buy their CD.
Indigo girls came next. I like them,
but have never bought any of their music. I knew about 4 or 5 of
their songs, but didn't know the words. I think I was about the only
one in the crowd that didn't. I really liked their spirit of
community with the other performers, including the second stage acts.
Just about everyone except Sheryl Crow joined the Indigo Girls on
stage at one point or another.
Then came Sheryl. By now the big full
moon was coming up and lent a spooky glow to the whole scene. Very
cool. I am a HUGE, HUGE Sheryl Crow and this was the moment I had
been waiting for. I have seen here twice before in the Twin Cities.
This was by far her best performance. Previously, she had appeared to
go through the motions a bit, but tonight she was WAY into her
performance. I had been secretly hoping that Prince would join her
onstage since I had heard he did that in Toronto, and he is from
here, and is giving a concert here over Labor Day, but no luck. He
joined Lenny Kravitz on stage that night, who was playing across town
in the Target Center. Sheryl rocked, sang every note hard and got the
crowd going the hardest it had been all day. Sarah joined her on
stage for "The Difficult Kind" which is my favorite Crow song, and
this just took me to new heights. I'll never forget how great her set
was.
Sarah then took the stage, and it was
clear from the start who owned the show. She played all the right
songs, played them perfectly and her voice couldn't have been better.
It was great hearing the entire crowd sing her lyrics, especially
"You're love is better than ice cream..." It was clear that this was
her baby, she was proud of it and was honestly taken aback by the
amazing crowd response. (I read in the paper that attendance was
about 28,000.) Very impressive performance. She also brought everyone
back out and when Sheryl sang "Angel" with her, it took the song to
another level. The closer, Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" was a tight,
but fun jam that got everyone involved.
This was probably the best experience
that I or my wife have ever had at a concert. Great day, great venue,
great atmosphere, great performances. Sarah, I am grateful to you for
putting together a show like this and showing all the people who said
it couldn't be done successfully that you were right.
