The GodFather Of The Blues
John Lee Hooker

John Lee Hooker was born August 22, 1917 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He was known to hang out and travel with Lightning Hopkins and Johnny Lee's cousin Earl Hooker.

JLH worked in a Detroit auto plant in the mid and late 1940's. It is said that he started playing electric guitar in 1948 which was the same year that his first hit "Boogie Chillen" came out. He was still working in that auto plant, apparently sweeping the factory floor, when his single hit the charts.

John Lee Hooker was finally honored in 1989 with a Grammy Award.

In the Blues Community, JLH took the seat of "Grand Ole' Man" after the death of Muddy Waters.

JLH still lives in San Francisco, and does not travel very far from home. His recent popularity and association with the likes of Carlos Santana and Bonnie Raite have brought his mellow style to a whole new generation of Blues Enthusiasts.
