Review:
(translated
and summarized from La Nación newspaper, March 31 edition)
The theater curtains open and the universe contained in the circular screen explodes. A howl crosses the stadium when the first unmistakable notes of "(I Can Get No) Satisfaction", are heard. The whole stadium shakes. The trip has began and the 65,000 people at the place let themselves be carried by the energy and scream at the end of the song. The next song is "Let's Spend the Night Together" and, as if going back in time, the screen changes to the rainy black and white of an old movie.
"Welcome to Bridges to Babylon, it’s nice being back here", says Mick in Spanish. He strips off his blue jacket revealing an orange shirt and yellow t-shirt he is wearing underneath. It’s time for new songs now, so they start playing "Flip the Switch". Mick shows once again that he still knows how to move. His body seems electrified by rock’n’roll and still thrusts sex-rock from his hips. Once again they go back in time to "Gimme Shelter" and Lisa Fischer shows her abilities singing with Mick, exchanging voices and moves in a sensual dance.
Everyone seems to know Keith’s
guitar by heart. They admire him, they love him and
in return, he strokes his
forehead, chest, stomach and feet with both fists, surrending to the crowd.
"Let’s slow down now" says
Mick while he picks up an acoustic guitar and starts playing "Sister Morphine".
As he had antecipated it in his interview, this show has opera characteristics;
it does not abuse technology but is more oriented to design and creativity.
Played on the stage with
the huge curtains, statues and golden as the big classic theaters, this
was the most touching and intimate moment of the whole show.
They quickly leave melancholia behind and start playing "It’s Only Rock and Roll". Keith’s guitar drives the crowd crazy, while the lights create different environments and situations with switches and color combinations.
Again two of the new songs. First "Saint of Me". Jagger playing acoustic guitar again while the screen alternates the current images of the show with those of the Saint of Me clip and the curtains move uncovering a giant golden eastern-like statue. Suprisingly (probably even for the Stones), the audience sings the song. Then comes "Out of Control", which Mick starts quietly to literally "lose control" jumping like crazy and then playing harmonica followed by Keith.
"Are you having fun? ", asks
Mick and the audience roars happy with the opportunity
to shout their passion.
"Let’s surf on Internet" he says, while the screen shows the cybervote
page and goes to the winner "Under my Thumb".
New act and Mick wearing a shining jacket with golden tongues on the lapels and a red Fender starts playing "Miss You". Again Lisa Fischer comes into the scene. With a long dress with big cuts on the sides she dances. Mick licks her. The boys admire him. The girls envy her.
Bobby Keys also stands out during this song and is applauded.
In an almost perfect Spanish
Mick introduces the band. First the guests, then "el loco" (crazy)
Ron Wood, Charlie Watts gets a huge ovation (just as he did in 95), and
ends with
"el gitano" (the gipsy)
Keith Richards.
Now it’s Keiths time and he sings "Thief in the Night" and "Wanna Hold You". Touched by the applauses he almost gets on his knees.
Then the surprise.
The bridge unfolds and the Stones walk their way to the smaller stage located
almost in the middle of the stadium. A circle surrounded by
people where the band goes back to its begining. A rock band playing
in a small club as in the past.
The songs are "Little
Queenie", "The Last Time" and "Like a rolling stone", which everyone
is expected to be sung with Bob Dylan next Saturday. The whole stadium
sings with them.
The show goes on, it never stops. The Stones take no breaks so while they walk back to the main stage, the tribal drums start playing prenouncing "Sympathy for the Devil". The whole time Mick hipnotizes. He walks as a wild animal, while singing, along the 54 meters long stage. Suddenly he stops, moves his body, lifts his arms and no one can stop following him in his madness. He doesn’t seem to be the same guy who was on the TV screens on Saturday, wearing a pink jacket during the press conference. It’s on the stage where he reaches his whole dimension of a great artist and professional teaser. His body vibrates to the music. He gives it all.
The show keeps travelling in time. The Stones have decided to show their 35 years history which is also the history of many of those who are in the audience. Arms lifted, lighters, shirts whirling in the air.... and Mick shares the game.
"Tumblin’Dice" comes next, followed by "Honky Tonk Women" and "Start Me Up" comes with the fire works.
An unmistakeable riff sounds and Mick puts on dark glasses. Blue T-shirt on top of a red one which he lifts showing his chest while he starts singing "Jumpin' Jack Flash". More fire works and to complete the scene Mick waves his T-shirt in the air and thousands of fans follow him doing the same. Rock helicopters. Keith wants more. He gets closer, comes down the stage and walks while playing his guitar and hundreds of arms stretch trying to reach him.
The final outburst. They leave but they come back for the encore with "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and the great end with "Brown Sugar". The audience goes crazy but one of the final surprises almost paralizes them: from different spots of the stadium silver confetti illuminated turns into unreal snowing. It’s the end, they wave goodbye, Keith hangs on him everything they give him. Shirts hanging on his neck, head bands on his forehead, small flags. He takes it all, the gifts and the applauses.
They leave but there are
still other bursts, not only in the hearts but those of the the fireworks
at the back of the stage. It’s the end of the party. Just this
one because there is more coming soon.
