“Let me go.” Bo said as he struggled to break
free from the two boys that held him.
All his efforts to try to get loose were in vain, the two boys holding
him were both older and stronger then he was. He wished Luke was around,
Luke would make these bullies let him go if he was. Luke always took care
of him, but Luke wasn’t around. Bo wished that he was bigger and stronger
so he could fight the four boys that had started bothering him, while he
was fishing at Hazzard Creek, his attempt at fighting back had only rated
him a bloody lip.
“Keep quiet.” Martin said, raising his hand
to threaten to smack Bo if he said another word.
Bo looked at the older Bo with unwavering dark blue eyes that shone
with anger. Martin had expected the younger kid to be crying in fear when
they attacked him, but Bo didn’t seem to be showing any signs of fear,
and was remaining defiant.
“You won’t get away with this.” Bo said flatly,
he was actually quite afraid but was trying hard to hide it.
“I told you to shut up.” Martin said, and
smacked Bo across the mouth.
Bo flinched at the sharp blow and took a deep breath to bite back the
tears of pain that swelled in his eyes.
“When Luke finds out he’ll pound your head
in.” Bo said.
Martin laughed. “Yeah right. I think between the four of us we’ll be
the ones pounding his head in if he comes anywhere near us.”
Anger raged through Bo and he struggled to try to hit Martin for what
he said. Jason tightened his grip on Bo’s other arm and Zack kicked him
from behind, his foot striking firmly against the small of Bo’s back. Bo
couldn’t help but cry out in pain, which made all the boys laugh.
“Why do you even try to fight back? You know
we can beat you with a hand tied behind our back.” Martin said.
Bo only glared at Martin with an angry look. “Why are you doing this?”
Martin only smiled at Bo, there was something in the smile that deep
frightened Bo. Bo gave up fighting and stopped talking allowing the older
boys to drag him along to wherever it was they were taking him. He began
to realize where they were going the old abandoned circus train, that sat
deserted in the middle of nowhere. There was an old abandoned building
near the tracks, neither had been used in the past ten years, a wide open
field was along the other side of the tracks. It was an area that nobody
ever went near, there was stories that the circus train was haunted by
ghosts. Bo trembled slightly and his eyes widened with fear. Martin smiled
seeing that the young boy had become afraid. Bo hoped it wouldn’t take
Luke too long to find him, he didn’t doubt that Luke would find him and
save him. Luke was not only an older cousin to him he was also his best
friend and more like an older brother then a cousin and he was Bo’s hero.
Through Bo’s, seven year old, eyes Luke was a hero capable of doing anything,
no matter how great the deed, and would always be there for there him to
save him and keep him safe. Bo adored Luke and wanted to be like
him, in his mind Luke was a greater hero and was better then any of the
television hero on the cowboy movies he watched with Luke. Martin let go
of Bo and climbed up on the flatbed car of the train. Jason picked up Bo
and tossed him up to Martin. Bo tried to get away from Martin, but his
attempts were vain and Martin only held on to his arm tighter. Martin
drug Bo over to a small red cage that sat on the flatbed car. Bo’s stomach
tightened as he realized just what these boys were planning to do to him.
Bo tried hard as he could he to break free, and managed to twist out of
Martin’s hold. Bo started to run but tripped over an old circus tent and
fell down, slamming his knee hard into an old chain, Bo cried out in pain
as it felt like a firecracker going on in his knee. Martin grabbed him
by the back of his neck and hauled him to his feet. Bo stumbled unable
to put any pressure on his left leg, his knee had already started to bruise,
turning a dark purple. A sharp pain raced through Bo’s knee as Martin forced
him to walk back over to the cage, his lip trembled and his eyes watered
with tears. Jason, Zack and Matthew were all standing by the cage waiting.
Bo stumbled into the cage, as Martin shoved him in, collapsing on the dirty
floor of the cage. The door of the cage slammed shut like a gunshot. Matthew
locked the door with a pad lock handing the key to Martin.
“What should we do with the key?” Martin asked.
“Why not just get rid of it, it is not like
we will ever be letting him out of there.” Jason said.
Bo trembled in fear, terrified at the thought of being trapped in the
small cage.
Martin smiled nastily. “True. Maybe one day someone will find the key
and then can take his decaying remains out of there.”
Martin tossed the key from the train; it landed in a patch of tall
weeds. Bo’s knee throbbed as he pulled himself into a sitting position
and sat against the far wall of the cage.
“Now what?” Matthew asked.
“Now the real fun begins.” Martin said.
“Do you think this train is really haunted?”
Zack asked.
“Yeah it is, and come night fall Bo will find
that out for himself.” Martin said.
Bo watched the four older boys with terror filled eyes, he prayed for
Luke to find him before nightfall, before the ghost came out. Bo was scared
about what they were going to do him, in time in the past a bully had picked
on him Luke had been right there to save him but Luke wasn’t there this
time and Bo was scared of what might happen if Luke didn’t appear soon.
“What is the matter Bo, are you scared?” Martin
asked and laughed.
“Oh the poor little baby, are you gonna cry?”
Jason asked. “C’mon cry like the baby you are.”
Bo bit back the tears, trying hard to be brave like he knew Luke would
be, his dark blue eyes watchful of the four boys every move. Jason picked
up a metal bar and ran it along the metal bars of the cage, slamming in
against the outer wooden frame.
“All caged up just like an animal.” Zack said.
Matthew set the backpack he was carrying down and opened the bag. He
took out a brown paper bag, and opened to reveal it was full of firecrackers.
Martin smiled widely and pulled a lighter out of the pocket of his jeans.
He pulled a firecracker out of the bag and lit it. Bo’s eyes widened in
sheer terror as Martin tossed the lit firecracker into the cage with Bo.
It landed a foot away from Bo’s foot and exploded. The sound of the firecracker
going off drowning out the sound of Bo’s scream. Each of the boys then
took out a firecracker from the bag. Bo couldn’t help but cry in fear and
pain as he pulled his knees up tight to his body, praying none of the firecrackers
would hit him. His left knee burned in pain from being tucked up like it
was, but Bo was to afraid to move his leg for fear of being hit by one
of the firecrackers. The four boys lit their firecrackers and tossed them
into the cage, just barely missing Bo’s body, two of them landed were Bo’s
leg had been. Bo whimpered softly in terror as the tossed the firecrackers
in with him. There seemed to be and endless number of firecrackers. Bo
screamed in fright a couple times when the firecracker bounced off him
before exploding. His ears were ringing with the sound of the firecrackers
going off. Finally there was no firecrackers left Martin, Matthew, Zack
and Jason all stood there laughing as Bo sat trembling in fear, tears streaking
his face. Bo’s knee ached but he was too terrified to move, his whole body
frozen in fear.
Luke sat looking for the science project that
he was working on with Alex Chase. They were sitting on the floor in Alex’s
rooms, the project spread out all around them. He had a bad feeling in
the pit of his stomach, and had a twinge of worry that something was wrong
with Bo.
“Earth to Luke.” Alex said, waving his hand
in front of Luke’s eyes.
“What?” Luke asked.
“You seemed to just space out there, are you
okay?” Alex asked.
“Yeah I just . . . had this bad feeling that
something is wrong with Bo is all.” Luke said.
Alex smiled and shook his head.
“What is that suppose to mean?” Luke asked.
“Nothing just that you and Bo are closer then
me and my own brother and your only cousins.” Alex said.
“It is just different with me and Bo.” Luke
said.
“So I’ve noticed, everyone knows that about
the two of you. You are lucky Bo is a lot less annoying then my little
brother whose Bo’s age.” Alex said.
“Do you mind if we do this another day, the
project ain’t due till next month anyways, I just got a bad feeling that
Bo is in trouble.”
“That’s fine.” Alex said, and walked with
Luke to the door. “I hope that Bo is okay.”
“Thanks. Talk to you later Alex.” Luke said.
“Bye now.” Alex said and waved bye then closed
the door.
Luke walked into the farmhouse, Jesse was sitting in the front
room reading a book. He looked up when he heard Luke come in.
“You’re home early, is everything okay?” Jesse
asked.
Luke shrugged, not sure if he should tell Jesse that he thought Bo
might be in some kind of trouble. “Where’s Bo?”
“He’s out fishing at Hazzard Creek. Why is
something wrong?” Jesse asked.
“No. I just have something to talk to him
about, and I want to tell him before I forget.” Luke said.
“Oh okay.” Jesse said. “Don’t you boys stay
out by the creek too late dinner is in two hours.”
“Yes sir.” Luke said and rushed back outside.
Luke got on his bike and peddled fast as he could to the creek. He
knew just where Bo would be fishing at, the same spot they always fished
from at the creek.
Luke became even more worried when he saw
Bo wasn’t there, but his fishing line laid on the ground, still cast out
into the water. Luke looked around for Bo, peering into the shadows of
the woods for any sign of Bo.
“BO! HEY BO, WHERE ARE YOU?” Luke yelled,
trying to hide the worry in his voice.
Luke bent down on reeled the line in. He set the fishing line down
with his bike and began to look through the woods, calling Bo’s name. Luke
finally gave up and walked back to his bike. He became consumed by worry,
he knew that Bo would never just take off, and that something had to be
wrong. He knew he had to tell Jesse now that his feeling had been right.
Luke got on to his bike, carrying Bo’s fishing pole, and sped back to the
farm.
Jesse knew that something had to be wrong
as Luke raced into the house, his eyes reflected his worry.
“What’s wrong?” Jesse asked.
“I didn’t want to say nothing before in case
I was wrong . . . but I wasn’t wrong.” Luke said, speaking very quickly.
“Just slow down Luke, what weren’t you wrong
about?”
“I had this feeling that Bo was in some kind
of trouble . . . he is not at the creek fishing, his pole was there, still
cast out and everything. I looked around but I couldn’t find him.” Luke
said.
Jesse’s face paled slightly. “Are you sure?”
Luke nodded. “Yes sir I am sure. I just got this really bad feeling
that Bo is in trouble.”
Jesse’s heart pounded with fear as his mind thought of all the things
that could’ve happened to Bo, he could’ve been kidnapped, laying hurt somewhere,
or worse.
“What are we gonna do Uncle Jesse?” Luke asked.
“About the only thing we can do, tell the
sheriff that Bo is missing and have him help us look for Bo.” Jesse said,
he tried to hide how worried he was from Luke, as not to make Luke more
worried then he already was.
Luke followed Jesse outside and got into Jesse’s old white pick up
truck. Luke looked out the window as the headed into town watching the
woods they passed, hopeful for some sign of Bo, there was of course no
sign of him.
Jesse pulled to a stop in front of the courthouse, and Luke followed
him inside. Rosco looked up from a pile of papers when they walked in.
“Oh, hi Jesse, what can I do for you?” Rosco
asked.
“Bo is missing.” Jesse said.
“Oh that’s just terrible. How long has he
been missing?”
“We just found out that he is missing. You
see he was fishing out at Hazzard Creek, and he just seems to have vanished.”
Jesse said.
“You can’t legally declare Bo to be missing
for twenty four hours.” Rosco said.
“If you ain’t gonna help us, then we are just
gonna go and try to find him ourselves. I know something is wrong and I
sure ain’t sitting around for no twenty-four hours to wait for your help.”
Luke said.
Jesse put a hand on Luke’s shoulder and gave him a look to hush. Rosco
just smiled.
“I never said I wasn’t gonna help ya Luke.
I don’t think we should be waiting twenty-four hour neither, I was just
saying that is when you can file a report that he is missing. I can help
you know, after all police work is my life.” Rosco said.
Luke gave a small smile, though his heart wasn’t really in it, he was
too worried about Bo.
“Thank you Rosco.” Jesse said.
“No problem. And don’t you worry about Bo
I am sure we will find him in no time and he’ll be just fine.” Rosco said.
They search party then set off to try to find Bo.
Jason glanced at his watch. “It is almost
dinner time, we had best get going.”
“Yeah, I don’t know about y’all but I was
having so much fun I lost track of time.” Martin said.
Jason, Zack and Matthew all nodded in agreement.
“How about you Bo, you having fun?” Martin
asked.
Bo only stared blankly at the older Bo, too afraid to move or speak.
Martin pulled out a plastic bag and took out a piece of raw meat.
“Figure since you are all caged up like an
animal that you should be eating like one.” Martin said, tossing the raw
meat into the cage with Bo, it landed a few inches away from him. “You
had better eat it all up before all the wild animals come around, they’ll
be clawing at the cage to get at it and you if you don’t”
“It starts to get dark in about an hour, I
hope you ain’t afraid of the dark.” Jason said, and laughed.
Bo watched as the four boys disappeared from sight then he started
to cry, his whole body shook with sobs, he had never felt so alone in his
whole life. Bo took a deep breath and started to yell out for help, screaming
until his throat hurt and he couldn’t scream any longer. Bo sat quietly
watching the sunset over the horizon knowing he’d soon be alone in the
dark, and that scared him more then anything. Once it was dark the ghost
and the creatures that go bump in the night would be lurking through the
darkness all around him.
When it started to grow dusk, they stopped
looking for Bo, knowing they wouldn’t be able to find him in the dark.
Rosco told Jesse that he would file a missing person’s report for Jesse
first thing in the morning. Neither Jesse nor Luke ate much dinner, they
both just mostly pushed the food around on their plates. They were too
worried about Bo to eat. After dinner Luke sat by the window watching the
encroaching darkness creep slowly across the land. Jesse walked over and
stood behind Luke, gently placing a hand on his shoulder.
“I feel this is my fault.” Luke said.
“It is not your fault Luke, why would you
think it is? We don’t even know what happened.”
“It don’t matter what happened, I should’ve
been there to protect Bo, to take care of him like I normally am.” Luke
said.
“It is not your fault Luke, you had no way
of knowing that anything was going to happen. I am sure that Bo will be
okay.” Jesse said.
“I still just can’t shake the feeling that
something is wrong, and now I just feel so alone.” Luke said.
“You are not alone, I am here.” Jesse said.
“I know that Uncle Jesse it is just . . .
different.” Luke said.
Jesse nodded in understanding he knew it was because a kind of bond
that the two boys had since they were so close, or he wondered if it was
a bond that made them close.
Bo laid down on the floor of the cage, laying
his head on his hands, and got as comfortable as he could. He started to
think about what had happened out by the pond. Luke had gone to work on
his science project and Jesse was busy so Bo had gone fishing on his own.
The spot that he and Luke fished from wasn’t very far from the farm, and
after promising to be careful Jesse had let him go there on his own.

Bo looked up when he heard a twig snap of in the
woods to his right. He didn’t anything and thought it was perhaps only
a deer that had came down to the stream for a drink of water. Bo went back
to fishing when suddenly a pair of rough hands grabbed him from behind.
Bo screamed in surprise and fear as he was hauled to his feet. He came
face to face with Martin and his gang of friends, who were Luke’s age,
and known to be the meanest kids in all of Hazzard.
“What do you want?” Bo asked, trying to be
brave, wishing Luke was there to protect him from these bullies.
“We are just gonna have us some fun.” Martin
said.
“Yeah well go have fun somewheres else.” Bo
said, pulling away from Martin.
Martin shook his head. “Nah, you see you are gonna be joining us.”
“Well I don’t want to, so just go away.” Bo
said.
“You being very nice Bo, didn’t your Uncle
Jesse every tell you to be nice?” Jason asked.
“Fine then go away please.” Bo said, in a
sarcastic tone.
“C’mon Bo don’t you want to hang out with
us?” Martin asked.
“No, not particularly.” Bo said.
“Why not?” Martin asked.
“Because y’all are a batch of mangy polecats.”
Bo replied.
Anger flashed through Martin’s eyes and he smack Bo across the mouth.
Bo stumbled backwards from the force of the blow, tripping for a root of
a tree that was protruding from the ground, and falling to the ground.
“That was not very nice. I think we ought
to teach you some manners.” Martin said.
Bo scrambled to his feet and locked for a possible way to escape. He
took a deep breath and ran as fast as he could through the woods. He could
hear the older boys trying to catch up to him, yelling at him to stop.
Bo wasn’t sure how far behind him the other boys were but was too afraid
to check and see. Suddenly Martin appeared in front of him, having cut
through the woods to cut in front of Bo. Bo yelled in surprise and tried
to turn to run another direction in the woods. Martin grabbed Bo’s arm;
Bo swung at Martin, hitting him in the stomach. Martin seemed to not be
phased by Bo’s punch, he punched Bo in the jaw. Bo gasped at the pain,
as his lip started to bleed.
“I suggest you don’t try that again, next
time I’ll hit you harder.” Martin said.
The others boys stood back watching and smiling, almost hoping the
younger boy would fight back so they could see some blood, Bo’s blood.
Martin started to drag Bo along; Bo struggled to break free from Martin
and almost did when Jason grabbed his other arm.

Bo was pulled out of the flashback by a low growling
sound. In the last remaining light of the day Bo saw a gray fox prowling
around the cage. Suddenly Bo remembered about the raw meat. Bo picked up
the piece of meat and threw it as far away from the cage as he could. He
wiped his hands off on his jeans. The fox saw the piece of meat and ran
over to it. After a few minutes it finished eating, the fox looked around
for another few moments then took off running. It had been a warm spring
now, but now as it grew dark the temperature started to drop and Bo shivered,
he was only wearing a light spring jacket which did little to protect from
the cold wind. Dark clouds started to fill the sky threatening rain. As
the sky grew darker and darker Bo realized that there wouldn’t even be
any lit from the moon tonight, thought of being alone in the pitch black
night filled his mind with fear, Bo closed his eyes and tried to block
out the impending darkness.
Bo fell into a light sleep, he wasn’t sure
how long he had been asleep, when he was woke up by the feeling of rain
hitting his face. It was a cold rain that seemed to chill him right to
the bone. Bo sat up, leaning against the wall, leaving his left leg in
the position it was in, knowing it would only start to hurt more again
if he moved it, it had gone numb. Pure darkness surrounded Bo; the only
sound he could hear was the pattering of the rain. He could feel himself
slowly becoming soaked by the rain; the cage provided little shelter, the
wind blew the rain threw bars. Bo shivered wishing he had worn a warm jacket.
Bo thought about his family and wondered if Jesse and Luke missed him as
much as he missed them. Bo stared into the darkness almost expecting Luke
to emerge from the blanket of darkness that covered the land like a knight
in shining armour, Bo sighed realizing that would never happen as such
things only happened in the movies. With Bo only being seven and there
being rumours that the old circus train was haunted Bo’s imagination soon
got the better of him.
A train whistle pierced through the silence
of the night filling Bo with fear, as he thought the rumours of the train
being haunted were true. He could hear the sound of the train’s wheels
as the clacked along the old track, steadily growing louder. Light from
the train shone on him, in an almost blinding light, the tracks seemed
to tremble beneath him as the train sped towards him. Bo closed his eyes
tightly, telling himself there were no such things as ghost and it was
only his imagination.
“IT IS NOT REAL!” Bo yelled over and over
again, trying hard to believe his own words, but at the same time he was
sure that the train would slam into him at any moment.
After a moment everything went silent, but it was an eerie silence
that sent a chill through Bo. He opened his eyes and looked around, seeing
nothing through the darkness. He could hear the old signs that were on
the train flapping in the breeze, the rain had slowed to a light drizzle
and Bo could only hear a few drops beating against the top of the cage.
The sound of soft music began to play, it sounded like that of a merry
go round. Though there was nothing merry about the music, it was cold and
eerie, and had an almost dead tone. Bo trembled in fear and from the cold,
wanting more then anything then to be in the safety of his own room. As
Bo stared into the darkness he could make out a merry go round sitting
near the train, the horses going round an round, some of the horse changed
to look like skeleton and others changed to look like demon horses. All
the sounds of a circus filled the air. Ghosts of the circus people flew
through the air howling, they flew towards Bo passing through the bars
of the cage, he shuddered as the ghosts passed through him.
“LEAVE ME ALONE! YOU AREN’T REAL!” Bo yelled
as loud as he could, his throat still sore from all screaming he had done
early.
The ghosts seemed to vanish but the sounds of the circus didn’t. Bo
heard a deep growling sound and looked up to see a lion standing in front
of him. Bo wanted to scream in fear but the scream was locked in his throat.
The lion looked to be half decayed and stared at Bo with hungry eyes. Bo
covered his face with his hands as the lion leapt at him. After a moment
when nothing happened Bo lowered his hands, there was no lion there and
all the circus stuff was gone. The only sound was the rain and the signs
flapping in the wind. Bo trembled trying hard not to cry, but he couldn’t
hold back the tears that swelled in his eyes. He was beyond being afraid,
he was terrified, and he could no longer pretend to be brave. Bo laid back
down, covering his head with his arms and cried himself to sleep.
Luke couldn’t sleep, the room that he and
Bo had always shared seemed so empty without Bo’s presence. Being in the
room alone made Luke miss Bo even more then he already did. His mind raced
with things that could’ve possible happened to his younger cousin. Not
knowing where Bo was and if he was okay filled Luke with dread. He got
out of bed and went and sat in the front room, he turned on a light and
stared out the window. He listened to the rain beat steadily against the
window and prayed that wherever Bo was he was somewhere out of the rain.
Jesse couldn’t sleep either and got out of bed, he was surprised to find
Luke sitting in the front room.
“What are you doing up?” Jesse asked.
“I couldn’t sleep, I am too worried about
Bo, and the room just seems to empty and quiet without him there.” Luke
said.
“Would you like a cup of cocoa?” Jesse asked.
Luke nodded. “Yeah thanks.”
Luke and Jesse sat at the kitchen table drinking the cocoa, neither
of them talking, both praying that they would soon find Bo.
Bo woke up the next morning as the early morning
light of dawn splashed on to his face. He sat up slowly his body stiff
from the uncomfortable position that he had been sleeping in. Bo stomach
growled in hunger, having not eaten anything since lunch the pervious day.
His mouth was dry and his throat was sore from all the screaming. Bo watched
as drops of water dripped off the top of the cage, the droplets of water
glistened in the morning sun. Bo slid his hand through the bars and caught
the drips of water in the palm of his hand, figuring rain water was better
then no water. Once he had a small amount of water in his hand, he slowly
and carefully pulled his hand back through the bars. Bo sipped the water,
it didn’t taste too good but it was at least wet. After a few moments,
the drips stopped, Bo was still thirsty but his mouth wasn’t as dry. He
wondered if the other boys would come back today, though he wasn’t sure
if he’d rather be alone then to have them there. Part of him hoped this
was just some kind of mean joke and they would come there today and let
him out, though deep down he knew that wasn’t going to happen. Bo leaned
against the back of the cage and watched the sun rise over the horizon.
Luke went with Jesse to the sheriff’s station.
Rosco was talking to two men when they walked in. Rosco turned and smiled
when he saw them.
“Oh good you’re hear Jesse, I was just gonna
call you. These gentlemen are here from the state police I called them
to tell them about Bo being missing. They want to ask you a few questions.”
Rosco said.
“What kind of questions?” Jesse asked.
The one state policeman, Fred, looked at Luke. “If you’ll excuse us
young man.”
“If this has anything to do with my cousin
I ain’t leaving.” Luke said.
“Fine then. Mr. Duke we just want to ask you
a few questions to determine if your nephew Bo is missing or if he ran
away.” Fred said.
“Bo would never run off.” Luke said.
Jesse put a hand on Luke’s shoulder and gave him a look to hush. “Luke
is right, Bo wouldn’t run off, he’d have no reason to.”
The state police looked skeptical, they had both worked many missing
children cases before and nine times out of ten the child had run away.
“Have you been in any fights with him lately,
or perhaps disciplined him? Anything like that, that could’ve made Bo run
off.”
Jesse shook his head. “No sir. Nothing like that at all.”
“I told y’all that Bo would never run away.
Why are you trying to say he did? You should be out there helping us to
find him, he could be hurt.” Luke said, his voice filed with anger.
“Hush Luke, why don’t you go wait outside for me?”
Luke sighed and decided it was best to do what Jesse
asked him to. Luke left the room, but didn’t go outside, he stood beside
the door and listened to what was being said.
“I understand that you have to ask these kinds
of thing, but Bo would never run away.” Jesse said.
“He’s got a point, Bo is just a little kid.
He’s a good kid I couldn’t see him running off.” Rosco said.
Fred nodded slightly, there was something in the old man’s voice that
told him it wasn’t a lie. “Okay, so that means that he is missing.”
Jesse refrained from yelling in the man’s face, saying that is what
I told you.
“Do you have a current picture?” Fred asked.
Jesse nodded and took a picture from his wallet and handed it to Fred.
“Where was he last?” Fred asked.
“Fishing at Hazzard Creek, by the Mine Pill
turnoff.” Jesse said.
“Don’t worry Mr. Duke, we will do everything
we can to find him.” Fred said.
Luke quickly ran outside when he heard everyone getting ready to leave
the room. Jesse and Luke got into the pickup truck.
“Don’t worry Luke I am sure that we will find
Bo and that he will be okay.” Jesse said.
“I hope so.” Luke said.
After getting back to the farm, Luke took
his bike to look for Bo. Trying to think of anywhere someone may have taken
Bo. He searched around a few old abandoned buildings. His hope soon started
sink when he found no clues as to anywhere Bo could be. Luke heard someone
and looked up to see Martin, Jason, Zack and Matthew approaching. Luke
sighed thinking to himself that he didn’t have time to bother with them
right now, not with Bo missing.
“Hey Luke, you lose something?” Martin asked.
“What’s it to you?” Luke asked.
Martin only smiled in return there was something in his smile that
Luke didn’t like. Luke walked towards Martin.
“I just thought you seemed to be something
or rather someone.” Martin said.
Luke rushed forwards and grabbed Martin by the front on his shirt.
“Have you done something to Bo?”
“What would you do if I have? Squeal on us
again just like, you did before?” Martin said.
“If you have done anything to hurt Bo, I’ll
pound your head in.” Luke said flatly.
Martin laughed. “There is four of us and one of you. I think we would
be the ones that won any fight. Though you do fight better then your bratty
little cousin.”
Luke lost control of his temper at Martin’s last statement, he punched
Martin in his stomach with all his strength. Martin coughed and stumbled
backwards trying to catch his breath. Matthew, Zack and Jason rushed forward
and tackled Luke. He tried to fight them but fight the three of them at
once. Matthew and Zack held him by the arms and Jason hit him several times.
Martin walked over and stood in front of Luke.
“What did you do to Bo, if you harmed one
hair on his head I swear I’ll break you neck.” Luke said threateningly.
“You ain’t in any position to be making threats.
If you break my neck you won’t find your dear little cousin. Though by
the time anyone does find him it’ll only be to bury him.” Martin said.
Luke’s mind clouded with rage and his heart beat wildly with fear,
had they killed Bo over something so trivial. He struggled to break free
but couldn’t break from the hands that held him.
“What have you done to Bo . . . did you
. . .” Luke started to say but found he couldn’t speak the words.
“No he ain’t dead yet, but he will be after
awhile, and you wouldn’t be able to stop that from happening.” Jason said.
“You shouldn’t have crossed us Luke.” Martin
said. “Your cousin will pay for your squealing with his life.”
“Why Bo? If it is me you are mad at, why are
you doing this to Bo?” Luke said.
“Because you two are close. Everyone knows
that and it is the best revenge to take him from you.” Martin said.
Luke stared at Martin with wide eyes unable to believe that these boys
were ready to commit murder over something so minor as him telling on them.
They had been suspended from school after he had told them, when he caught
them killing the class pet, a small brown gerbil. They had been suspended
for two months, and had told Luke to watch his back because they would
get him for snitching. Luke never suspected something so extreme though.
He never thought that by snitching on them that they would hurt Bo. Taking
the life of a gerbil and the life of another human being were two different
things, Luke couldn’t believe that they were actually threatening to kill
Bo.
“Where is Bo?” Luke asked.
“I am not about to tell you that.” Martin
said.
“Why don’t you just let him go. You can’t
be serious about this.”
“We are serious Luke. We told you to watch
your back. You should’ve listened, and I guess you should’ve been watching
your cousin’s back.” Martin said.
Martin then punched Luke hard as he cold in the stomach, and then across
the jaw. Matthew and Zack let go of Luke and he dropped to the ground.
Luke gasped deeply trying to catch his breath.
“See you around Luke, next time will probably
be at Bo’s funeral.” Martin said.
Luke wanted more then anything to get up and strangle each of them
for what they were doing to Bo but he couldn’t catch his breath to go after
them. He watched with teary eyes, consumed with fear for Bo’s life, as
they rode of taking his bike. Zack and Matthew had been riding double,
so Matthew was now riding Luke’s bike. Luke cursed himself for being helpless
to stop them from hurting Bo and for allowing Bo to be caught by these
boys who were bent on getting revenge on him. He blamed himself and wondered
how he was going to tell Uncle Jesse.
Bo heard the sound of someone approaching
and looked up, he sighed softly in dismay to see that it was only Martin
and his friends. He immediately noticed that Matthew was riding Luke’s
bike and wondered what was going on, he was worried that they had done
something to hurt Luke. Martin noticed that Bo was looking at Luke’s bike
and smiled.
“I think you are wrong about your cousin trying
to find you.” Martin said.
“No I ain’t wrong.” Bo said.
“Yes you are in fact we had a nice talk with
Luke today.” Jason said.
“And he didn’t seem to interested in trying
to find you, said he had other things more important to do.” Martin said.
“That’s a lie.” Bo said.
“No it is not a lie Bo, we told him where
you are, and that was over and hour ago, obviously he didn’t care too much
or he would be here now.” Martin said.
“Then why do you have his bike?” Bo asked.
“He let Matthew borrow it since Matthew don’t
have a bike.” Martin said.
“I don’t believe you.” Bo said.
“It is true. Face it kid nobody is coming
looking for you because nobody cares. You are so wrong to think that your
cousin is gonna come and save you like so hero from a movie.” Martin said.
“You are wrong. You are lying.” Bo said, wishing
he actually believed his own words. He was starting to think what Martin
was saying was true.
“Accept the truth Bo. Luke doesn’t care enough
to come and save you. He said he had other things to do, in fact he said
he might even join out gang.” Martin said.
“Luke would never hang out with the likes
of you.” Bo said.
“Perhaps you don’t know your cousin as well
as you think you do.” Martin said.
Bo didn’t respond to Martin, starting to believe the older boy’s words.
“In fact he is glad you ain’t around because
he don’t have to pretend to be nice to you. He has said before the only
reason he acts nice to you is because your uncle makes him.” Martin said.
Bo felt tears burning his eyes, he wondered if it was the truth and
Luke only pretended to be his friend. He had always looked up to his cousin
and always tagged along most everywhere Luke went and he wondered if it
was true that Luke only allowed him to because Jesse made him. He wondered
if Martin was telling the truth that Luke knew where he was and wasn’t
coming to save him. He had always thought Luke was his best friend and
protector but now he started to wonder. Martin smiled as he saw the doubt
in Bo’s dark blue eyes, knowing Bo was starting to believe his lies, and
figured it wouldn’t take long to break the young boy’s spirit now.
“How did you like out here all alone last
night? In the cold and the rain?” Martin asked.
“I want to go home.” Bo said softly.
“You aren’t ever going home Bo so get used
to it here.” Jason said.
A couple tears slid down Bo’s cheeks. “Please I want to go home, please
let me go I don’t want to be here any longer.” Bo begged softly, his voice
trembling.
“Forget it, you can beg all you want we ain’t
ever letting you out of here.” Martin said.
“So is this old train really haunted?” Zack
asked.
Bo didn’t respond his eyes just seemed to widen with terror at the
thought of what he had seen last night. The older boys started to laugh.
“I take that as a yes.” Martin said.
Martin took out a glass jar from his backpack, Bo’s eyes focused on
what was in the jar with a look of terror. It was a small brown and black
tarantula, it flexed its long furry legs along the glass. Bo trembled with
fear and Martin walked towards the cage. Martin shook the jar and the spider
became visibly agitated. Martin carefully used his jacket to open the jar
and quickly slide in between the bars and into the cage with Bo. Bo whimpered
softly in fear his body paralyzed with fear as the tarantula crept towards
him. The other boys stood watching and laughing at Bo’s fear, Bo was so
transfixed staring at the spider that he didn’t even hear their cruel taunts.
Bo had never really liked spiders, in fact he had always been quiet afraid
of them, he had a touch of acrophobia, ever since he could remember. He
knew the fear of spiders was probably irrational but right now it was all
he could think of as the spider crawled towards him. Bo gave a soft cry
of fear as the spider crawled onto his foot, sure that at any moment it
would sink it’s small fangs into him. Bo took a deep breath and gathered
all his courage, he shook his foot and the spider fell off of him. The
spider stood still for a moment looking dazed and confused. Then started
to crawl towards Bo again. Bo lifted his foot and brought it down hard
on the spider, feeling it squish beneath the bottom of his boot. Martin
scowled and cursed beneath his breath.
“What’s the matter baby didn’t like the company
of the spider?” Jason asked.
Bo looked up at them, not even to bother to try to put on a brave front.
“No, not particularly, no more then I like y’alls company.”
“That’s not very nice. Luke seemed to like
our company, more then he likes your company.” Martin said.
Bo looked away from them he stared out across the empty field. Tears
burned in his eyes, he had really started to doubt Luke’s friendship. A
lack of sleep and the lack of food and water had started to effect Bo’s
mind and he was starting to believe the older boy’s lies. He wanted to
just curl up in a ball and go to sleep, never to wake up again, believing
that they were right he was going to die in the prison of a cage.
It took Luke about forty-five minutes to walk
home. Jesse was on the phone, though he quickly hung up when he saw Luke.
Luke’s face was pale and his eyes looked haunted.
“What’s wrong?” Jesse asked, his voice was
filled with concern.
“I . . . I know what happened to Bo . . .”Luke
said his voice trailing off.
“What?”
“Remember how I told you about catching them
other boys killing the class pet?”
“Yes I remember that. I was proud of you for
you doing the right thing.” Jesse said.
“They said they’d get me for that . . . thing
is to get me back they went after Bo. I tried to make them tell me where
they had him but there was four of them . . . I couldn’t fight them, they
stole my bike . . .” Luke said.
“What do you mean by where they have him?”
Jesse asked.
Luke took a deep breath and slowly released it, wondering how he was
going to tell his uncle what the other boys intentions were. “They have
hid somewhere and they don’t plan on letting him go until he . . . until
Bo is . . . dead.”
Jesse’s face paled. “Are you positive?”
Luke nodded, fighting back the tears in his eyes. “They made sure I
knew. It is all my fault Uncle Jesse, it is my fault that Bo’s life is
in danger.”
“It is not your fault Luke.” Jesse said softly,
pulling his nephew into a hug.
“Yes it is. I should’ve been there to protect
Bo, Uncle Jesse he counts on me to keep him safe, to keep people like them
from hurting him.” Luke said, finding no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t
keep the tears back, he leaned against his uncle’s shoulder and cried,
finding a little comfort in his uncle’s hug.”
“It’s okay Luke it is not your. We can go
tell Rosco what you found out and he can make them boys tell where they
have Bo hid. Don’t you worry none about Bo, I am sure that he will be fine.”
Jesse said, trying hard to hide the fear in his voice, trying to be brave
for Luke’s sake.
Luke nodded slightly he didn’t want to let go of Jesse, he felt like
a little kid that just had a nightmare and the only way to find comfort
was in the arms of a loving family member. Luke knew that he had to let
go though and he sniffed back his tears and let go of Jesse. Jesse and
Luke went outside and got into the pickup truck and headed into Hazzard
to tell Rosco what they had just found out about what had happened to Bo.
Jesse knocked on the door to Rosco’s office.
A moment later Rosco answered the door.
“Oh Jesse it is you.” Rosco said, then noticed
how pale they both looked. “What’s wrong?”
“Luke found out what happened to Bo.” Jesse
said.
“Oh really. What a goody goody.” Rosco said
and smiled he couldn’t understand why they looked so upset, then he began
to wonder if something had happened to them.
“Not really, in fact it makes matters worse.”
Jesse said.
“Oh there is a flaw in the slaw. Come into
my office and sit down and tell me about it.” Rosco said.
Jesse and Luke walked into Rosco’s office and sat down.
“So what did you find out Luke?” Rosco asked.
Luke looked at Jesse, visibly nervous.
“It is okay Luke.” Jesse said softly.
Luke took a deep breath and then told Rosco about what he found out.
“That’s horrendous. How could they be so cruel,
thems little meanies.” Rosco said.
“I thought maybe you could make them talk
and tell where Bo is before . . . anything happens to him.” Jesse said.
“I’ll find them and I’ll make them talk. I’ll
cuff ‘em and stuff ‘em and then they will talk.” Rosco said.
“Thank you very much Rosco.” Jesse said.
“It is my job Jesse, police work is my life.”
Rosco said.
Jesse smiled, Rosco tended to be strange and little addle headed but
he was a good police man and did his job well.
“I just can’t believe that they’d do such
a thing. Bo is such a good little kid always so friendly to everyone.”
Rosco said.
Jesse nodded. “I guess it goes to show how cruel some children can
be.”
“Don’t you worry none I’ll find them and they
won’t get away with it.” Rosco said.
Rosco walked with Jesse and Luke out of the police station and walked
over to his patrol car.
“Time for hot pursuit, I love it I love it.”
Jesse shook his head, smiling slightly as Rosco sped off down the road,
he prayed that it wouldn’t be too long now until they got Bo back. Jesse
and Luke got into the pickup truck and headed back towards the Duke farm.
Martin and his friends continued to taunt
Bo with lies and just harass him in general. Bo could no longer pretend
to be brave his spirit broken he curled up on the floor, and cried. The
other’s boys taunts and their words making fun of him for acting like a
baby ran in his ears. He tried to close their voices out but couldn’t.
Bo had given up thinking anyone would come and safe him from this torment,
and wished he would just die now. After a while Bo became unresponsive
to their taunts. Martin tried tossing a couple more firecrackers in with
Bo, but he still didn’t move or make any sound. He was silent and withdrawn,
he seemed like a caterpillar, that had wound itself into cocoon.
“This is getting boring.” Jason complained.
“Yeah I know.” Martin said. “Let’s go have
our camp out.”
They had decided to camp out for a couple days, figuring Luke had squealed
to the cops about what they were doing to Bo. They figured after a few
days the cops would give up looking for them and they could come up with
a story to say that Luke was lying that they were involved. Bo was dimly
aware that they were leaving and was glad, he thought he would much rather
be alone then to be in their company.
Rosco tried to find the boys but couldn’t.
All any of their parents didn’t know where they were, only that they were
camping out somewhere. The search for them, and to find Bo before it was
too late continued. Luke had become quite quiet blaming himself for what
had happened to Bo. He prayed that they would find Bo and that Bo wouldn’t
hate him too much for how he let him down. The next night, as the sun began
to fade a lone patrol car drove along the rode that led to the old circus
train. Agent Mark Hill didn’t know why he was driving down the old deserted
road, he just had a gut feeling that it was the right thing to be doing.
As he drove along, he got sight of something, in his headlights, in one
of the cages. He got out of his car to get a closer look. He saw it was
the young boy how was missing. He jumped up onto the flatbed car and went
to the door of the cage. His heart was beating rapidly, he hadn’t been
on the force too long and this was by far the cruelest thing he had seen.
He wondered how anyone could be as cruel as to lock this young boy in a
cage in the middle of nowhere. He took out his stick and used it to break
the lock off. He opened the door and stepped into the cage. The small boy
shiver as he touched him and cried out softly.
“It’s okay I am here to help you.” Mark said,
worried about how cold the boy felt.
Mark took off his jacket and covered Bo with it.
“ Please don’t hurt me.” Bo begged softly.
“I am not going to hurt you, just relax I
am here to help you.” Mark said, and carefully picked up Bo.
Bo cried softly in fear, not believing the stranger’s words that he
wasn’t going to hurt him. Mark carried Bo to his patrol car and carefully
laid Bo on the backseat. He covered Bo with a blanket from the trunk of
the car, and then sped towards Tri-County General Hospital.
Jesse and Luke sat quietly in the small waiting
room. They were the only ones in the room. Jesse had tried to get information
but got no answers. He wanted to thank the state police officer that had
found Bo, and hoped that later he would get the chance to. He wondered
what kind of condition Bo was in, but figured since he was told nothing
it couldn’t be to bad and at least Bo was alive. He looked at Luke, feeling
bad for him, Luke was filled with such deep guilt and nothing Jesse said
helped him get over it. Luke’s pale blue eyes looked distant and appeared
to be filled with deep worry for his cousin, as he stared across the room.
It was nearly an hour later before a doctor came into the room.
“Mr. Duke?”
“Yes that is me. How is my nephew?”
“I am Dr. Kross. Bo is in stable condition.
He is extremely dehydrated, we have an IV running. He is also suffering
from an extreme case of fatigue. The only visible injury he has is a busted
kneecap, he’ll have to wear a brace for about six weeks on it.”
“Other then that he is okay though, right?”
Dr. Kross shook his head. “We had to give him a mild sedative as he
tried to fight us, he wouldn’t listen that we were trying to help him.
He seems to have pulled himself into a cocoon thinking the whole outside
world is his enemy.”
“Perhaps if we talk to him he will come out
of that.” Jesse said.
“I hope that you are right. I will take to
his room. Just let me tell you he might not be the same kid that you remember.”
Jesse only nodded then he and Luke followed the doctor to Bo’s room.
Bo lay quietly on the bed, he looked to be
lost in a daze, and an IV slowly dripped into his left arm. Jesse walked
over and stood next Bo’s bed.
“How you doing kiddo?” Jesse said, lightly
brushing back a stray lock of Bo’s blonde hair that had fallen across his
eyes.
Bo flinched and pulled away from Jesse’s touch, looking up at him with
scared eyes. Luke walked over and stood next to Jesse.
“Hey Bo.” Luke said softly.
Bo didn’t say anything he only stared at Luke with wide distrustful
eyes. Bo had pulled so far into a cocoon that he didn’t even recognize
his family he saw them only as outsiders, and didn’t trust them, just as
he didn’t trust anyone not to hurt him. Luke’s lip trembled as his eyes
swelled with tears. He hated to see Bo looking at him with distrusting
eyes, eyes that were full of fear and pain. Jesse reached out to touch
Bo again. Bo pulled away before Jesse could even touch him, his body trembling.
He felt tired from the sedatives but fought sleep off, afraid people would
hurt him if he slept.
“It is okay Bo, don’t you recognize us?” Jesse
asked.
“Please don’t hurt me.” Bo whispered softly.
“Bo we are not going to hurt you. We are your
family and we love you very much.” Jesse said.
Jesse wanted nothing more then to be able to pull his youngest nephew
into a hug and take away all his pain, but was afraid of how Bo would react.
“I am sorry Bo. I know I let you down . .
. I should’ve been there for you.” Luke said, and reached out to softly
touch Bo’s hand.
Bo cried out and pulled his hand away. He tried to get out of the bed
but couldn’t move his left leg. His knee was so bruised and swollen and
with the brace he couldn’t move it at all. The needle of the IV pulled
at his arm, Bo grabbed it with his other hand and pulled it out.
“Calm down Bo, it’s okay we aren’t going to
hurt you.” Jesse said softly.
Bo whimpered softly, pulling as far away from Jesse and Luke as he
could. A nurse came in and gave Bo another sedative, his eyelids drooped
and he could no longer fight off the sleep.
“What did you give him?” Jesse asked.
“Another sedative to calm him down and put
him to sleep, he needs his rest.”
The nurse put the IV back into Bo’s arm and turned to Jesse. “I think
it would be best if you came back in the morning. Maybe by then he will
have calmed down and with sleep be thinking clearly.”
Jesse nodded as he locked at his nephew’s still form, hating the fact
that there was nothing he could do to take Bo’s pain away.
“C’mon on Luke.” Jesse said.
“I want to stay with Bo.” Luke said.
“I am sorry but you can’t. We can come back
first thing tomorrow, perhaps by then Bo will be doing a little better.”
Jesse said.
Luke sighed, he wanted to stay with Bo but realized he had no choice.
“Okay.”
Luke followed Jesse from the room, glancing over his shoulder one last
time at Bo as he left.
“I am sorry Bo.” Luke whispered softly, in
a voice so low nobody else could hear.
Luke didn’t get much sleep that night and
was up at the crack of dawn, impatiently waiting to go to the hospital
to see Bo again. He prayed that Bo would at least remember them today,
he had a gut feeling thing though that things would not be that simple.
Jesse and Luke stopped to talk to the doctor
in front of the door of Bo’s room.
“How is he today?” Jesse asked.
“He is still about the same. We have to keep
him sedated, if is not he tries to get away from anyone that tries to do
anything to help him.”
“When can he go home?” Jesse asked.
“He just needs to stay one more day for observation,
then he can go home.”
Jesse and Luke went into Bo’s room and sat down beside Bo’s bed. Bo
barely even seemed to notice that they were there. His eyes looked distant
and haunted. Bo seemed to pull himself into his own little world.
That afternoon, they found Martin, Matthew,
Jason and Zack. After a couple hours of questioning Zack broke down and
told the truth about what had happened and why they had done it. The four
of them were later sentenced to a juvenile correction facility, until they
turned eighteen.
Bo showed no signs of any psychical damage
and was released the next day. The doctor gave Jesse a small bottle of
sedatives in case Bo became too hard to handle. Bo trembled in fear the
whole ride to Hazzard. He felt trapped as he sat between Jesse and Luke.
The cab of the truck felt much smaller then it really was and Bo found
it hard to breathe. When they got out of the truck at the farm, Bo wanted
to run, but could barely even walk with the brace on his knee. He was too
afraid to even try to get away afraid they would only hurt him more if
he tried to escape. Bo’s eyes watered with tears of fear as he walked into
to the house, afraid of what kind of torture they had in mind for him.
Afraid that they would lock him into a small place.
Bo lay on his bed, the people he was with
hadn’t tried to hurt him but Bo figured it was only a matter of time before
they did. In Bo’s mind the whole world was a cruel and heartless place
and everybody would hurt him, because nobody cared about him, they all
wanted him dead. Jesse walked into the room carrying a tray of food.
“Would you like some lunch?” Jesse asked.
Bo just looked at Jesse not responding. Jesse’s heart ached to see
Bo’s eyes showed no sign of recognition. Jesse sat the tray down on the
bed. Bo seemed to grow nervous when Jesse came close. Jesse sighed wishing
he knew how to talk to Bo. Not knowing what to say Jesse left the room
allowing Bo to eat his meal. About an hour later Jesse came back into the
room with a photo album, he though perhaps if Bo saw the pictures it would
help to break down the wall Bo built around himself and that Bo would started
to remember him and Luke. Jesse took the tray, he smiled to see that Bo
had eaten all of the food.
“I thought you might like to look at this.”
Jesse said.
Bo looked at the book with mildly curious eyes, then looked distrustfully
at Jesse.
“Don’t you worry none Bo. I am not going to
do anything to hurt you. I’ll leave with you to look at.” Jesse said. “Please
just try and get better, okay?” he added softly.
Part of Bo’s heart seemed to yearn to listen to the man’s words, wanting
to believe him, but his mind was filled with too much fear of being hurt
to listen to that tiny part of his heart. After Jesse left Bo opened the
book and looked at the pictures. What he was being told seemed to appear
to be true in these pictures, they seemed to care about him, perhaps even
love him. He wished he could remember who they were, to him right now they
were just more strangers, strangers that would hurt him. His heart seemed
to be torn in two, part of it wanting to believe that these people loved
him the other filled with fear, the pain still fresh in his mind.
Jesse went back into the room almost two hours
later. Bo sat propped up against the pillows. He looked up at Jesse his
dark blue eyes a turmoil of emotion. His eyes passing from one emotion
to another in a matter of seconds. Tears started to course down his cheeks.
He opened his mouth to speak but no words came out, Jesse could see the
wall Bo had built around himself was slowly starting to crumble, but he
could tell it was far from collapsing. Instead of speaking Bo only started
to cry harder. He walked over and sat down on the edge of Bo’s bed. He
pulled Bo into a gentle hug.
“Hush it is okay baby you are safe now, you
are safe.” Jesse soothed softly.
Bo leaned against Jesse, finding comfort in his loving embrace, memories
of his uncle filled his mind and slide his arms around him, crying against
his shoulder.
“I am scared Uncle Jesse.” Bo said softly.
“It is over now Bo.” Jesse said.
Bo shook his head slightly. “No it ain’t.”
“Yes it is. They have been locked away for
what they did to you.” Jesse said.
“It is not over he knows he knew.” Bo said.
“Who are you talking about?” Jesse asked.
“He’ll hurt me if I tell you. The moment you
are gone he will hurt me.” Bo said.
“You can tell me Bo, I won’t let anyone hurt
you.” Jesse said.
“No. He will find a way. He has lied he pretend
to be my friend, he made me trust him and it was all a lie. He was only
faking.” Bo said, his voice trembling.
“Tell me who you are talking about?” Jesse
said.
Bo shook his head.
“Would you tell Luke, then he could protect
you from whoever it is you are afraid of.”
Bo’s body seemed to tense up at the mention of Luke’s name. “NO!”
“Okay Bo. Just relax.” Jesse said.
Jesse held Bo for a few minutes and then Bo laid back down on the bed.
“Just get some rest okay?” Jesse said.
Bo nodded. “Yes sir.”
After Jesse told Luke that Bo was doing a
little better Luke rushed into the room to talk to Bo wanting desperately
to apologize to Bo for letting him down. Bo seemed to grow frightened as
Luke walked towards his bed. Luke stood at the side of the bed. Bo looked
up at Luke with distrustful eyes, which made Luke’s heart sink.
“I am sorry Bo, I should’ve been there to
help you.” Luke said.
“Don’t lie.” Bo said.
“What are you talking about? It is the truth
I am sorry.” Luke said.
“You are just saying that so you won’t get
in trouble with Uncle Jesse.” Bo said.
“That is not true Bo. I am sorry.” Luke said
and sat down on the edge of Bo’s bed.
Bo pulled away from Luke.
“Leave me alone.” Bo said.
“Bo I know you are mad at me and I am sorry.
I should’ve been there to protect you, I wish I could turn back time but
I can’t.” Luke said, he placed a hand on Bo’s shoulder.
Bo pulled away from Luke’s touch and got out of the bed. He stood up
wobbly on his sore knee, trying to escape from Luke. He watched Luke with
frightened distrustful eyes. Luke stood up and stepped towards Bo.
“Bo why are acting so afraid of me, you know
I would never do anything to hurt you.”
Bo backed up, bumping into the wall, he felt trapped, Luke was between
him and the door.
“Leave me alone. You lied. You have always
lied to me.” Bo said.
“That is not true Bo. I have never lied to
you.”
“Yes you pretended that you cared. Pretended
to be my friend. You only said you were my friend because Jesse made you.”
Bo said.
“That is not true.” Luke said walking over
to Bo. “You are my best friend Bo and I love you like you are my brother.”
Bo shook his head, dropping down to the floor as Luke grew closer.
Luke knelt down in front of Bo.
“Bo please don’t be mad at me. I am sorry
I am so sorry.” Luke said.
“You knew.”
“Knew what?” Luke asked.
“Where I was.” Bo said.
“No I didn’t. All I knew is that they had
you somewhere and were hurting you. I wanted to get them for that but there
was four of them I couldn’t fight them all.” Luke said and reached out
to touch Bo.
“Don’t touch me.” Bo said.
“How could you think that I could know and
not come and save you?”
“You knew you don’t care.” Bo said.
“Oh Bo, I am sorry that I couldn’t stop them.”
Luke said.
Luke placed a hand on Bo’s shoulder.
“Please don’t hurt me. I won’t tell Uncle
Jesse.” Bo said.
Luke looked at Bo, seeing Bo’s dark blue eyes looking at him with fear
and distrust cut him like a knife.
“Bo I didn’t know.” Luke said.
“Yes you did.”
“No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did. YOU KNEW!” Bo screamed.
Bo’s scream brought Jesse running into the room.
“What is going on in here?” Jesse asked, and
saw Bo was looking at Luke with terror filled eyes.
“You knew.” Bo said, trying to push past Luke
to get into the safety of Jesse’s arm.
Jesse knelt down by Bo. Luke stood up and backed off, his eyes watery,
as he watched Bo to cling to Jesse and cry. He couldn’t believe that Bo
actually would think he could know and not do anything to help him. He
hated the other boys for they had done to Bo. He felt that they had still
succeeded in taking his best friend away from him. Once Bo’s tears had
slowed Jesse sat back and looked at him.
“Now Bo you know Luke wouldn’t do anything
to hurt you.” Jesse said.
“He knew.” Bo said.
“That is not true Bo, Luke didn’t know.” Jesse
said.
“Yes he did. He ain’t really my friend, he
just pretends to be because you make him.”
Jesse shook his head. “I never made Luke be your friend. He didn’t
know. You know that Luke wouldn’t do anything to hurt you.”
“Yes he would.” Bo said.
“Name one time.” Jesse said.
Bo thought about it for a moment. “He knew.”
Jesse could hear the certainty in Bo’s voice, and knew Bo actually
believed that Luke knew. He sighed and hugged Bo close. He glanced at Luke,
he wanted to take away Luke’s pain at the same time he comforted Bo, but
knew it only agitated Bo more for Luke to come near. Jesse picked Bo up
and carried him back to the bed and gently laid Bo down. He motioned to
Luke to leave the room. Bo closed his eyes and started to fall asleep.
Jesse looked down him, he prayed that Bo would soon see through the lies
and believe in Luke’s friendship once again. Bo had always had a kind of
blind faith in his older cousin now he had no faith. Jesse walked out of
the room to go and talk to Luke. He hoped that Luke understood that Bo
wasn’t thinking clearly after his ordeal and that Luke wasn’t too hurt
by Bo distrust.
Luke was sitting on the couch crying. Jesse
sat down beside him and hugged him.
“I didn’t know Uncle Jesse.”
“I know you didn’t. I know you wouldn’t ever
do anything to hurt Bo.” Jesse said.
“How come he actually thinks I did? I mean
Bo knows I care I mean . . .” Luke said unable to find the right words.
“Bo is just not himself right now. He is still
out of sorts with everything that has happened. You just have to give him
time.” Jesse said.
“How much time? I already miss him so much
and waiting for him to come around will be like he still isn’t here. I
have lost the best friend I have ever had, or could have.” Luke said.
Jesse sighed. “I know that this is hard on you Luke. You just have
be patient and give Bo time.”
Luke nodded, and leaned his head against Jesse’s shoulder trying hard
not to cry. He wondered what he would do if Bo never came back around,
if Bo never trusted him again, and if Bo never wanted to be his friend
again.
“Uncle Jesse?”
“Yes, what is it Luke?”
“Where am I going to sleep? I mean if Bo gets
so upset when I am near him, how can I sleep in the same room as him.”
“We can fix the spare room up for now.” Jesse
said.
The next few days passed much the same. Bo
talked to Jesse but remained afraid of Luke. He was terrified to be in
the same room as Luke. Jesse did all he could to comfort Bo. Luke seemed
to start to become withdrawn, Jesse wished that he could do something to
help both of them, but knew the only way he could is when Bo finally saw
the truth and believed again in Luke’s friendship. Jesse was glad that
he didn’t have to use any of the sedatives on Bo, he seemed to be able
to calm Bo down on his own.
Jesse went into town to pick up a few supplies.
Bo was sleeping and Jesse figured he would be okay for the short time that
he would be gone. Luke was sitting in the front room, reading a car magazine.
Bo tossed and turned on the bed, his sleep haunted by a nightmare.

Bo was in the cage, he could see Martin, Jason,
Matthew, Zack and Luke all standing around the cage. All of them laughing
at him. Beyond the sound of their laughter he could hear the sounds of
the circus. Bo looked at Luke.
“Please help me Luke.”
Luke shook his head. “No way. I will finally be rid of you.”
“Please Luke . . . please I am scared.”
Luke only laughed. Suddenly the spider appeared in the cage, only it
was now the size of a large dog. Bo trembled at the sight of it’s long
fangs.
“Please help me Luke.” Bo pleaded as he felt
the spiders furry legs brush against his skin.
The spider arched its head back preparing to sink its teeth into Bo.
“NO!” Bo screamed.

Bo actually did scream out loud. Luke heard Bo’s
scream and dropped the magazine and ran to check on Bo. Bo was sitting
up on the bed, he was trembling and his body was covered with a cold sweat.
Luke went over to Bo and sat on the edge of the bed.
“It is okay Bo, it was just a dream.” Luke
said softly.
Tears streaked Bo’s cheeks the images of the dream not leaving. “Please
help me Luke.” Bo whispered softly.
“I am right here Bo. It is okay, it is all
over.” Luke said, pulling Bo into a gentle brotherly hug.
Bo didn’t resist, or respond in any way. Luke’s heart ached for his
cousin.
“It is okay it is all over.” Luke said, he
softly hushed Bo for several moments.
Bo relaxed in Luke’s arms, feeling safe and secure. Bo leaned against
Luke, crying against his shoulder. Luke just held him close.
“I am sorry that I wasn’t there for you Bo.
Please believe me that I would never do anything to hurt you. You are my
best friend.” Luke said.
Bo didn’t say anything, and Luke thought that maybe Bo had gone back
to sleep until Bo pulled away and looked at him. Bo looked at him with
uncertain eyes, his heart wanting to believe Luke’s words were true.
“Remember we are blood brothers Bo, you can’t
fake that kind of friendship.” Luke said.
Bo thought about what Luke said for a moment, and finally nodded in
agreement. Luke smiled widely.
“I am sorry Bo. I know I should’ve been there
to protect you.” Luke said.
“You didn’t know.” Bo said softly.
Luke smiled again, glad to see that Bo was coming around and that he
hadn’t lost his best friend.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Luke asked.
“I am tired . . . maybe later.” Bo said.
“Whenever you want to talk I’ll be willing
to listen.” Luke said.
Bo gave a small smile, Luke thought to himself it was the first time
he had seen Bo smile in days. Luke went to get up so Bo could go back to
sleep.
“Don’t go Luke . . . I don’t want to be alone
no more . . . I had enough of being alone.” Bo said.
“Okay.” Luke said, and sat back down on the
bed next to Bo.
Bo leaned his head against Luke, and closed his eyes. Luke put an arm
around Bo’s shoulders.
Jesse came home a short time later and was
worried to find the house so quiet. He went to the bedroom to check on
Bo. He smiled and his heart squeezed with joy when he saw both boys were
sleeping on Bo’s bed. Bo was curled up contentedly in Luke’s arms as though
he had never doubted Luke’s friendship. Jesse saw that both Bo and Luke
had a smile on their face and was glad to see that they had both found
the peace they had been searching for the past few days. Jesse left the
room quietly shutting the door behind himself.
Bo had trouble talking about what had happened
to him, but with Luke’s support he made it through it. He told Jesse most
of what happened, Luke was the only one that he told everything to do.
Bo’s knee healed after seven weeks, but the injures that couldn’t be seen
took longer to go away, some of them he thought would always be with him.
Bo had occasional nightmares about what had happened but it soon become
just a terrifying childhood memory. Through the support and love of his
family and Luke’s friendship Bo got over what had happened, the wall he
built around himself crumbled away to dust and he became the child everyone
had knew him to be before. His faith in Luke seemed to have only grown
stronger, and their bond seemed strength. Nobody could tell that Bo had
once doubted Luke’s friendship. They never talked about the fact Bo had
doubted Luke, both boys pretended like he had never happened. Bo prayed
that the other boys never came back to Hazzard unsure of how to handle
it if they did, but he knew one thing he wouldn’t be handling it alone,
Luke would be there for him, just like he always was.
