Love is a strange thing

The sun shone brightly over the hills of Hazzard County, not a single cloud could be seen in the bright blue sky. The Duke boys, Bo and Luke Duke, were heading into town to pick up some supplies that their Uncle Jesse had asked them to get. Bo had the accelerator to the floor as they sped along Cottontail Road in a cloud of dust, enjoying the carefreeness of life. Not knowing that just around the next bend there would be trouble that would threaten to tear the family apart.
As they sped around the corner and saw a red sedan on the side of the road, with its hood up, they knew that someone had car problems.
"Looks like someone's got car trouble." Bo said.
"Let’s stop and see if we can help." Luke said.
Bo nodded and pulled the General Lee to a stop behind the red car. They climbed out through the car windows, as the doors are welded shut, and walked around to the front of the other car. The girl who was looking over the car engine, trying to figure out what was wrong, looked up when she heard the boys approaching. The second that Luke saw her, he immediately recognised her, he smiled at her.
"Susan Timmen." Luke said, in a surprised voice, he had never thought he would ever see her again.
"Why if it ain't Luke Duke, it’s been years." Susan said, in an equal surprised voice.
"Too many." Luke said. "This is my cousin Bo." He added, gesturing to Bo as he spoke his name.
Bo smiled, and gave a nod by way of greeting.
"What you doing in Hazzard?" Luke asked.
"Well I have some things that I have to take care of." Susan said.
"What's the problem with your car?" Bo asked.
"I don't rightly know. I was coming back from Cedar City and it all of a sudden just up and died." Susan said.
Luke had started to look at the engine and had found the problem. "Well it looks like your carburetor float value has locked up. So tell you what we just gotta pick up a few things up in Hazzard, then after that why don't you join us for dinner, then you can meet the rest of my family." Luke said.
"We'll give Cooter a call and he can haul your car off to the garage and have it fixed for you in no time." Bo said.
"That sounds good to me. I'd love to meet the rest of your family. I've heard so much about them." Susan said.
"Well I think Luke mentioned you once or twice before, might I say it was very understated." Bo said with a laugh.
Luke just smiles and shakes his head.
    "Why thank-you Bo." Susan said.
Luke helped Susan into the General and they both sit in the back seat. Bo calls Cooter on the CB to come get Susan's car. Luke and Susan start to talk about the old days before they separated when Luke got reassigned to another location.
"So how long you around for?" Luke asked.
    "About 4 weeks." Susan
It took the boys about twenty minutes to get all the things that Jesse had sent them for, and half an hour since first meeting Susan alongside the road they arrive at the farm. Luke introduces Susan to Jesse and Daisy. They think that she seems to be nice and everyone was just getting to know one another when the boys realise they forgot to get a couple things.
"I'll go get them, that'll give y'all a chance to get to know Susan" Luke said, as he grabbed the keys to the General and heads out the door.
Shortly after Luke leaves to pick up the few things that he and Bo had forgot to get Jesse and Daisy go into the kitchen to start dinner, leaving Bo and Susan alone in the front room talking. Susan could feel herself falling in love with Bo's charm, believing in love at first sight, she had not felt such a way in along time and only thought of Luke as a friend now. She wondered to herself how Bo would react if she told him of the feelings that she was starting to experience. She was not the only one that was experiencing these feelings, Bo could feel himself falling for Susan as they talked. Bo found himself staring into her emerald green eyes, watching her twirl her long brown hair around her finger. Bo just tried to ignore those feelings figuring if Luke still had feelings for her that, that would be stepping over the line, and that was something he would never do. About twenty-five minutes later Luke got back from town, and Cooter had came for dinner with him.
"Just in time for dinner." Daisy said as the two men walked into the house.
"Well theres Luke back." Bo said getting up from the couch.
"Yeah." Susan said actually feeling a little disappointed cause she didn't want to stop sitting there talking to Bo, she felt she could stare into Bo's deep sapphire blue eyes forever.
Everyone talks as they sit and eat dinner, both Susan and Bo were trying to hide their surfacing feelings. After dinner they all sit around talking, Susan told them about how she and Luke had meet. As the night grew later everyone began to grow tired. Cooter gives Susan a ride back into town, as she is stay at the Hazzard Hotel, since he was going back into Hazzard anyway.
As the boys are going to bed and start talking about Susan.
"What do you think about Susan?" Luke asked.
"She's great." Bo says trying to hide the fact he thought he was falling in love with her, not knowing how Luke would react to that. "So how do you feel about her?" Bo
Luke at first was surprised by the question not really knowing why Bo was asking that. "Well I guess I think of her as a friend now. Why?"
"No reason." Bo said, thinking to wait until just the right time to tell Luke, he had the feeling that now wasn't the best time to bring up the subject, and that he wanted to discuss it with Susan first, doubting that she felt the same way.
Luke just shrugged dismissing Bo's question.
The next day the boys are in town, planning to meet up with Susan.  Luke was putting gas into the General, when Susan came walking over to them.
"Bo, can I talk to you?" Susan asked.
    "Yeah sure." Bo replies.
The two of them walk away from the General, Luke watches them go with an almost bewildered look wondering why Susan seemed so eager to talk to Bo, and not him.
"Bo, yesterday when we met . . . well . . . I think I feel in love with you." Susan said softly, hoping she was doing the right thing by telling him, fearing that he would only laugh and reject her.
"That makes two of us then honey, 'cause I feel the same way." Bo said, a wide smile spread across his lips, he was glad she had similar feelings, though he worried about how Luke was going to react.
"I've heard about love at first sight. I'd never thought it would happen to me. Why didn't you say anything yesterday?" Susan asked.
"Well, I didn't know if you and Luke still had any feelings for each other." Bo said.
"No, I just think of him as a friend now." Susan said.
"That's what Luke said to." Bo said. "I just had to be sure, I mean he is my cousin and not only that he is my best friend, and there is no way I would cross that line."
Susan smiled in understanding, thinking to herself how sweet Bo was.
Bo and Susan kiss, their lips locked in a passionate embrace and they hold each other close. Luke looks over and sees them kissing and can feel all the feelings he had for Susan come rushing back, but tried to suppress them.
Bo and Susan walk back over to the General.
"Well now what's going on with you two?" Luke asks, even though he already knows the answer.
"Well we found we both feel in love yesterday, love at first sight. Like a fairy tale, a princess finding her prince" Susan said staring into Bo's eyes.
"Or something like that anyways." Bo said, his eyes never leaving Susan's.
Luke can tell that Bo has totally fallen for Susan harder then he has fallen for any girl before, so doesn't wan to say anything to upset Bo, because he wants for Bo to be happy. Also he doesn't want to say anything because he had told Bo last night that he only thought of Susan as a friend and didn?t want to go back on his word.
"How nice." Luke said, forcing his voice to sound sincere, wishing in a way that he could truly be happy for them.
"Well Cooter has Susan's car fixed so I'm going to show her around, tell Uncle Jesse we'll be there for dinner." Bo said.
"Yeah, you two take it easy." Luke said, forcing a fake smile.
"See ya later cousin." Bo said, waving by as he got into the driver's seat of Susan's car.
Luke heads back to the farm, his anger festering as he drives along road to the farm. Jesse looks up as he hears the General coming towards the farm, he looks surprised to only see Luke get out of the car.
    "Where's Bo?" Jesse asked.
"Well Bo and Susan think theys in love, so Bo is showing her around, they'll be back for dinner." Luke said, as he walked towards the house.
"WHAT?" Jesse asked, his voice full of shock.
"Bo is showing Susan around Hazzard." Luke said, stopping to look at Jesse.
"Not that the other part." Daisy said.
"They'll be back here for dinner." Luke said.
"No, not that part, why are you avoiding the question?" Jesse asked.
"I am not avoiding any question, I said that the two of them think they're in love." Luke said flatly, trying hard to disguise the anger in his voice.
    "Really?" Daisy asked.
"Yeah. They got some idea about something about love at first sight or something like that." Luke said, wishing he didn't have to talk about it, he didn't even want to think about it.
"That's wonderful." Daisy said then takes the clean laundry, that had been hanging outside to dry, into the house.
"Yeah. Just wonderful." Luke mumbles under his breath, too softly for anybody to hear.
"Are you okay with all that?" Jesse asked, walking over to Luke.
"I'm fine with it, Susan is just a friend now." Luke said flatly, walking into the house.
Luke felt bad about lying, but he didn't feel he could say anything about still caring about Susan, figuring he would sound jealous for no reason, after all it been years since he and Susan had gone out.
After dinner everyone sat around talking. Luke barely talked, he felt if he talked his anger would show and he was trying hard to be happy for Bo. Jesse and Daisy could tell by the look in Bo's eyes that he has fallen hard Susan. Later that night Bo walks Susan out to her car. Jesse and Daisy talk.
"I don't think I've ever seen Bo fall so much for any girl. He's just so in love with Susan." Daisy said.
"No, neither can I. He seems really taken by her." Jesse said.
"He just seems so happy now, with Susan." Daisy said.
Luke felt they were right. He knew now he could not say anything or Bo would get hurt, and he did not want to hurt Bo, hurting Bo was one of the last things in the world he'd ever want to do. Luke felt if he said anything now that everyone would blame him for being so heartless, because he's the one who said Susan was nothing more then a friend, and it was obvious that Susan only thought of him as a friend.
The next day Bo goes into town to meet Susan.
"I've got a couple of things to take care of in Cedar City.  Do you want to come with me?" Susan asked.
"Sure. But tell you what, let's take the General he'll get us there a lot quicker" Bo said.
"Yeah, especially since you're driving." Susan said, laughing, but her voice sincere.
"Well I am one of the fastest drivers around these parts." Bo said.
As they are driving out to Cedar City ,on Willow Creek Road, the tire on the rear driver's side blows out.
"Dang it, and I was the one telling ya how the General would get us there quicker." Bo said.
"That's quite okay, I really don't mind being stranded along a road with you." Susan said, kissing Bo softly on the cheek.
Bo smiled widely, and then laughed. "Well I'd better get out and change it, cause it ain't going to change itself, and if I don't do it now I ain't ever gonna get it done." Bo said climbing out of the General.
Once Bo was around to the back of the General, Susan took a small black box out of her purse and slid it under the front seat of the General and then climbed out of the car and went around to Bo.
"Anything I can do to help?" Susan asked.
"No, I got it." Bo said.
By the time Bo had finished his bangs had fallen into his eyes. Susan walked over to him and brushed them back out of his eyes, he placed his arms around her hips and held her, and the two of them kissed.
"All that for fixing a blown out tire, girl if I had enough spares I think I'd try to blow out the other tires." Bo says jokingly.
Susan smiled. "It don't take all that effort for it."
"Is that a fact? I'd do anything to get a kiss from a beautiful angel like you."
"You certainly know how to sweet talk a girl, don't you?"
"Well I try, it is easy when you found someone so special." Bo said.
Susan just smiled and kissed Bo "Well you're pretty special yourself, my prince." Susan said.
As they drive to Cedar City they decide that once they get there they will just spend the reat of the day there. While Susan is taking care of her business at one place Bo calls home to tell Jesse he won't be home until late.
Jesse grabs the phone on the first ring.
    "Hello?"
    "Hey, Uncle Jesse."
"Bo, where you at?" Uncle Jesse asked.
"Susan had things to do in Cedar City, so we are just going to spend the day here, so I won't be home till late." Bo said.
"Well you take it easy, and stay out of trouble." Uncle Jesse said.
"Yes sir Uncle Jesse, bye now." Bo said.
Jesse hangs up the phone, at the same moment Daisy walks into the house.
    "Who was that?" Daisy asked.
"Just Bo calling saying he and Susan are in Cedar City and won't be home until late." Jesse said.
Luke who was just outside the window slammed the axe into the firewood, with a very angry, irritated look on his face, and then walked away from the farm.
Susan had been around for three weeks and her and Bo were so in love and so happy, they spent everyday together. Everyone was happy for them, all except for Luke who was starting to feel real anger towards Bo for stealing Susan away from him. Luke just spent the past three weeks trying to avoid Bo as much as possible, trying avoid confrontation. Bo did not notice Luke's cold behaviour as he was so far gone in love with Susan.  Bo was sitting on a chair in Susan's hotel room as Susan was packing her bags to leave Hazzard.
"Bo . . ."Susan said quietly her voice trailing off.
"Yeah, what is it darling?" Bo asked.
"I love you so much." Susan said.
"Well I love you to." Bo said.
"Well I don't want to be away from you so I'm thinking of moving to Hazzard." Susan said.
"I thought you liked the big city?"
"I like anywhere you are at. I want to be with you, and I could not ask you to leave your family it would not be fair, I know how much you love your family." Susan said.
    "Susan . . . I don't know what to say." Bo said.
"Just tell me you want to be with me to." Susan said.
"Of course I want to be with you, I have never felt this way about anyone before, I love you so much." Bo said.
    "Oh Bo." Susan says smiling.
By the time Bo goes back home it is late and all the lights at the Duke farm are out except for the porch light. Bo goes in to the house quietly as not to wake anyone. Bo walks in the bedroom that he and Luke share, being quiet as he can as not to wake Luke up, he can hear Luke's slow and steady breathing and knows he asleep. Bo climbs into his own bed, his thoughts about his discussion with Susan.
About half and hour after Bo left Susan's room, at the Hazzard Hotel two men got out of the black four door sedan that was parked across the street from the Hazzard Hotel. They went inside the hotel and up to Susan's room.
"Hello Susan." Don said, his voice dripping with fake kindness.
"What are you doing here? Get out of here now." Susan told the two men, close to screaming.
"That's no way to talk to your employer and . . . friend, Susan. Now where's the disk?" Don asked.
"You are no friend of mine. And what disk are you talking about?" Susan asked.
"Susan don't play dumb, we all know it was you who took the disk." Don said firmly, anger apparent in his voice.
"I don't know what disk you are talking about. Now you had better get out of here or . . ."Susan started to say but her sentence was cut short by Don.
"Or what? Just what are you going to do? Your boyfriend ain't here to protect you he's gone."
A worried look spread across Susan's face. She started to think that they had possible done something to harm Bo. The thought of Bo getting hurt because of her made her shudder. Don could see the dismay in Susan's eyes and smiled, a smile that had a look of pure evil.
"You're thinking we did something to that boyfriend of yours. Well we haven't at least not yet. So you hand over that disk now or we might just go and see if he knows anything. Now he may or may not know anything but I'm sure that Frankie could beat something out of him. Of course it is your choice." Don said as Frankie, who was Don's henchman, cracked his knuckles and smiled as though to punctuate what Don was saying.
"He doesn't know anything, don't you dare hurt him. I don't have your disk." Susan said, trying to hard to hide her fear.
"I think that you are lying to me Susan. I hate it when people lie to me." Don said and smacked Susan across the face and in one swift movement threw her into a nearby chair.
"Frankie I want you to tear this place apart and find it." Don said.
Frankie nodded and did as he was ordered. By the time he was done it looked as though a tornado had swept through the room, and he still hadn't found it.
"It ain't here Don, and we already searched the car." Frankie said.
"Where is that disk!" Don yelled at Susan
"I told you, I don't have it." Susan said trying to hold back the tears that burned in her eyes. She was so afraid for her life and that they would go and hurt Bo because of this, she hadn't wanted to involve Bo in this.
"Well, we will just have to take her with us until we can get her to talk . . . and don't you dare try anything or your boyfriend is dead." Don said.
"I think we should tear him apart to look for the disk." Frankie said.
Don smiled at thought and after a moment shook his head. "No, at least not yet."
Susan allowed them to take her to their car. As hard as she tried she could no longer stop her tears from flowing, and they began to course her cheeks. She knew that if anything happened to Bo it would be all her fault, and she doubted she could live with that. She loved Bo with all her heart and couldn't stand the thought of anything happening to him because of her.
Don and Frankie took Susan to an old abandoned hunting shack in Bronsons Canyon that they had stayed at that day while they waited for a clear chance to get at Susan. Frankie tied Susan up in a chair, being sure to tie the knots tight as to avoid her possibly escaping.
"You'd better start talking, or I won't be responsible for what happens . . . to you or your boyfriend." Don said.
The next morning the sun broke over the hilltop and it was a beautiful day, nobody had any idea what had happened to Susan last night. Bo, Luke and Daisy were in the kitchen and Jesse was outside gathering eggs.  Luke was siting at the kitchen table, on the side closest to the door and Bo is on the other side. Daisy was standing by the stove fixing breakfast.
"Well you certainly look happy this morning Bo." Daisy commented.
"Um, oh yeah. Well Susan said she's thinking of moving to Hazzard." Bo said.
Luke got a scowl across his face, which went unnoticed by Bo and Daisy.
"Really that's wonderful." Daisy said, genuinely happy for her younger cousin.
"Well that's just cause she's so wonderful and . . ." Bo started to say, but his sentence was cut short by Luke.
"Can't you ever keep your mouth shut for more then five seconds?"
Bo sat there stunned at first, then got angry." Just what is your problem?"
At that same moment Jesse came walking back inside the house.
"You're my problem.? Luke said flatly.
"Is that so?" Bo questioned growing more angry, his short temper ready to explode.
"BOYS!" Jesse hollered firmly to get them to stop fighting.
The two of them just glanced over at him, both their tempers were flaring. Luke jumped up from the table and stormed out of the house. With anger flashing in his eyes Bo got up went out after him. Jesse put a hand on his arm to try to stop him, but Bo just shrugged him off and went outside.
"What is your dang problem?" Bo asked.
"I told you, you are my problem!" Luke yelled, the past few weeks of anger and frustration coming to a head all at once.
    "Is that so?"
"Yeah, it is like I said you can't even keep your mouth shut for more then five seconds." Luke said flatly and then without warning punched Bo in the jaw.
Bo stumbled backwards, falling to the ground and before Bo could even get up Luke took off in the General Lee.
"What was that all about?" Jesse asked.
"How should I know. And why should I care?" Bo said he was so angry at Luke and yet more then he was angry he was hurt by what Luke had said to him.
Daisy walked over to him and put her arm around him.
"Daisy, do you think I could borrow Dixie for a couple of hours?" Bo asked.
"Sure here's the keys." Daisy said as she handed him the keys. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Bo lied as he took the keys from Daisy.
Bo climbed into the jeep and took off down the road in a cloud of dust.
"It'll be okay girl, we'll get by this." Jesse said walking over to Daisy.
"I sure hope so." Daisy said hugging her uncle.
Bo went to see Susan and when he got there he was surprised to find the door was slightly ajar. Bo opened the door and stepped into the room. He saw the whole place had been trashed, as though someone had been searching for something. Bo ran further into the room, scanning the room for any sign of Susan finding none. He wondered what had happened and where she was, he had noticed that her car was still parked outside when he had arrived. Bo just stood there for a moment unable to think of what to do. After a few moments of consideration Bo decided he had better go report this to Rosco, so he headed off for to go to the sheriff’s office.
Rosco was sitting at the desk in the main part of the sheriff’s office when Bo came running through the door. Rosco looked up, frowning at the sight of a Duke being in the sheriff's office, and not being behind bars.
"Rosco I'd like to report a kidnapping." Bo said.
    "Who'd you kidnap?" Rosco asked.
"Rosco, I am serious. I went to Susan's hotel room and it was trashed and she's gone." Bo said.
"Oh tidily. If she's kidnapped it was by you Dukes. I don't have time to waste on your lies, now get." Rosco said.
"You're not even going to look in on it are you?"
"There's nothing to look at. Now get before I arrest you for lottering." Rosco said.
"Fine be that way." Bo said angrily.
Luke sat out by Sunset Lake, on the hood of the General, and thought about what happened. He felt bad about what he had said to Bo, knowing he never shouldv'e said any of it. He really wanted to be happy for Bo, and knew he had no right to angry at Bo, though he was having trouble suppressing that anger. He felt really bad for having hit Bo. Luke knew that he had to apologise before his friendship with Bo was forever destroyed. Luke slid off the hood of the car and climbed inside.
Luke arrived back at the farm moments before Bo came back. Jesse and Daisy came out to talk to Luke when Bo came pulling in. Jesse and Daisy were surprised to see Bo back so soon. Everyone could see how upset Bo look and they all knew that something was seriously wrong.
    "Bo, What’s wrong?" Daisy asked.
"Something happened to Susan." Bo said.
"What do you mean?" Uncle Jesse asked.
"Well, when I got to her room at the hotel the door was slightly open and the room was trashed, her car is still there . . . I just know something has happened to her." Bo said.
"Oh my, have you told Rosco?" Daisy asked.
"I tried. He wouldn't listen to me." Bo said.
    "Figures." Jesse said.
"Well I guess we have to find out what happened ourselves then." Daisy said.
"You boys are going to have to stop your feuding and concentrate on the problem at hand. Do you boys understand?" Jesse questioned.
    "Yes sir." Bo replied.
    "Yes sir." Luke said.
"Good. Then let us go search the hotel room to see if we can find any clues as to what happened." Jesse said.
Luke, who was still standing by the General, climbed into the driver's seat and Bo got in on the passenger side.Dasiy and Jesse got into Dixie, following after the boys.
"Stay close girl, I want to be right there if them two tangle again." Jesse said.
"Yes sir, Uncle Jesse." Daisy said.
They arrived at the hotel a few minutes later. They check out Susan's car for clues. Finding no clues in the car they head up to Susan?s hotel room. After a few minutes of looking around Daisy sees something.
"Look at this red clay." Daisy said motioning to a patch of red clay that is soiling the carpet.
"Red clay, that can only be from but one place." Luke said.
"Bronsons Canyon." Bo said, finishing Luke's sentence.
    "Right." Daisy said.
"Well then that's where I'm going." Bo said, heading towards the door.
"Wait just a minute Bo, you can't go up by yourself, you don't know what's up there . . . or who. Luke go with him." Jesse said.
"But . . ." Bo started to argue.
"But nothing. Now you two listen to me, and stop all this petty feuding." Jesse said firmly, in a voice that left no room for argument.
"Yes sir, Uncle Jesse" Bo said.
    "Yes sir."
Bo and Luke take off for Bronsons Canyon while Daisy and Jesse stay at the hotel to look for more clues. Bo slides across the hood of the General and gets in on the driver’s side before Luke had a chance to. Luke didn't really want to be going anywhere with Bo he was; though he wanted to help Susan, he was still angry at Bo. Bo was still mad at Luke for saying the things he had said. However they both respected and obeyed what Jesse told them to do. Bo sped towards Bronsons Canyon, the were both silent the whole ride and they never even looked at each other.  Bo knew there was only the one cabin at Bronsons Canyon that was still standing, they rest having fallen down years ago, he figured that must be where Susan was. Bo stopped the General a little ways away from the old cabin. Luke jumped out, or the car first, and went ahead a ways down the path.
"Can't you move any faster, hurry it up." Luke said in a demanding voice, much in the same tone as when he was in the Marines.
"Yes sir." Bo said sarcastically getting out and catching up to Luke.
Luke stayed ahead of Bo towards the cabin. They were about half way to the cabin when someone jumps out from a bush, from just behind Bo, holding a large stick. The man stood at least three inches taller then Bo, his large body rippling with muscles. He had jet black hair that reached to his shoulders and dark brown eyes.
"What do we have here a couple of intruders?" Frankie questioned, he recognised Bo as being Susan's new boyfriend, though he had no idea who the other guy was.
"This is a public place we ain't intruding on nobody." Bo said flatly.
Luke heard Frankie and stops and turns around to see what is going on.
"A know it all, well I hate know it alls." Frankie said and slammed Bo in the stomach with the stick.
Bo dropped to his knees, clutching his arms around his stomach.  Luke filled with anger towards the guy that had attacked Bo. Luke was still mad at Bo, but he most definitely didn't want him to get hurt.
"You can't do that." Luke said angrily stepping towards Frankie.
"Yeah well I did. Now its your turn." Frankie said, smacking the stick against his own had lightly in a threatening way.
Frankie lunged towards Luke, with the stick raised high. Before Luke even had time to react, Frankie slammed the stick against the side of Luke's skull, knocking him out cold.  Bo moved to check on Luke, seeing that he was unconscious his eyes filled with worry that Luke was really hurt. Bo could see that Luke was bleeding where the guy hit him in the side of the head. Bo went to say something to Luke, when Frankie grabbed him from behind pulling him away from Luke.
"C'mon blondie, since you decided to show up now you might as well join us." Frankie said as he pulled Bo to his face.
Bo faced Frankie, his dark blue eyes blazing with anger, he wanted to bust open his skull for hurting Luke, then his thought turned to Susan.
"What have you done to Susan?" Bo asked.
"You'll see soon enough." Frankie said, and led Bo to the cabin.
Don looked up as he heard Frankie come in, his long red hair falling into his green eyes.
"What . . ." Don starts to say then notices Bo.
"Him and some dark haired guy were out snooping around."  Frankie said.
"Well let's go tell Susan that she has a guest." Don said.
Frankie drug Bo to another room and shoved him through the door. Susan looked up when the door opened. A smile spread across her lips.
    "BO!"
"Susan are you okay?" Bo asked.
Susan nodded slightly. Bo went to rush over to her when Frankie grabbed him by the back of the neck, stopping him. Don stood in between Bo and Susan.
"Where is the disk Susan?" Don asked.
"I told you I don?t have it." Susan said.
Don turned to face Bo. "Do you know where the disk is blondie?"
"I don't know what disk you are talking about." Bo said.
"Ain't that a shame." Don said, he took out a switchblade, snapping the blade open and holding it close to Bo's face.
Bo tried to turn his head but Frankie held him firmly.
"Please don't hurt him, he doesn't know anything about the disk." Susan pleaded.
"Well that's his problem." Don said.
Bo's eyes were unwavering, refusing to show his fear, as he felt the cold steel of the blade touch against his face.
"Where is the disk?" Don asked again, though it sounded more like a demand then a question.
Bo just glared coldly at Don. Don smiled, a cold dark smile, and slid the blade down along Bo's cheek, deep enough to draw a trail of blood. Bo flinched slightly, and Don pulled the blade back. Don looked at Susan. "Tell me what I know to know, or your boyfriend is going to feel some serious pain."
Susan looked nervous, she didn't wanted anything to happen to Bo, but knew she couldn't tell Don where the disk was, it was important that he never got that disk back. Bo tried to struggle to break free from Frankie, but couldn't. Susan could read his eyes telling her not to tell Don anything, and she was grateful for Bo's understanding. Frankie handed Don a pair of brass knuckles. Don smiled as he slid them on and made a fist. Bo bit his lip to keep from screaming out in pain, as Don landed several firm punches. Frankie held Bo's arms behind his back. After a few more punches, Bo's head dropped forward limply, breathing deeply, trying to catch his breath after being punched in the stomach. Don grabbed Bo by the chin and held his head up to face him.
"Do you want to change your mind about knowing anything?" Don asked.
Bo only looked at him defiantly. Susan sat quietly with tears streaking her cheeks, it pained her to see Bo suffering like he was because of her. Don punched Bo as hard as he could in the ribs, and Bo couldn't help but cry out in pain.
Luke slowly began to wake up his head throbbing. He blinked his eyes several times to clear his vision. Luke stood up slowly stumbling slightly at first before catching his balance. He brought his fingers up to his temple and could feel dried blood. Luke looked around for Bo, seeing him nowhere, fear began to clench at his heart, he could sense that Bo was in danger. Luke decided to go back to the General to get his bow and arrows. Luke grabs his bow and a batch of arrows, including a couple dynamite arrows, and then heads towards the cabin.
Luke peers in the one window and his heart sinks, he can see Bo lying on the floor, his body covered with blood, having obvious trouble breathing. Luke's mind raced with a mix of anger and worry, anger at the ones who had hurt Bo, worry for Bo. He saw a man, other then the one from the woods, standing in front of Susan, who was tied to the chair. Luke could barely see her face, but he could see her tears. He couldn?t hear what they were saying but decided it was time to break up this little party.
Luke tried the door but found it was locked, he back up several feet and shoot a dynamite arrow at the door. The door exploded into thousand of splinters when it was hit.
"What the hell was that?" Don asked.
Frankie just shrugged.
"Luke . . ." Bo whispered softly, his voice weak.
A moment later Luke burst through the door, and arrow cocked pointed at Frankie, who was standing near Bo.
Frankie smiled. "I took care of once I can take you again."
Luke dropped the bow and arrow and rushed towards Franke. The two men exchanged several blows, seeming equally matched. Luke grabbed Frankie, managing to twist the bigger man's arm behind his back. Frankie howled in pain as a snapping sound pierced through the aor, as Luke broke Frankie's arm. Frankie fell to the ground clutching his arm. Luke turned to face Don, who now held a gun on Susan.
"Back off boy or she's dead." Don said.
Luke took a step forward and Don pulled the trigger. Susan cried out in pain, as a hot pain raced through her body. Don pointed the gun at Luke and pulled the trigger, getting nothing but a clicking noise. A scared look crossed Don's face as Luke approached him. Before Luke could reach him Don ran out of the room with Fankie following him closely. Before Luke could catch them, they had got into their car and sped away. Luke rushed back into the house to check on Bo and Susan.
Luke untied Susan and laid her down gently on the ground, he took off his jacket and pressed it against the bullet wound. Susan locked eyes with Luke.
"Go check on Bo . . . I'll be fine." Susan said.
Luke only nodded, not really believing the last part of what she said. Luke gently rolled Bo onto his back. Bo seemed unresponsive, Luke checked for a pulse, giving a sigh or relief when he felt Bo's pulse was steady, Bo had only passed out from the pain.
"C'mon on Bo wake up." Luke said softly, cringing at the sight off all the bruises and cuts on Bo's body.
Luke noticed a CB on a nearby table and called for help. Luke went back and sat next to Susan. It seemed impossible to slow the bleeding. Luke knew he had to keep Susan wake and responsive, so he started getting her to talk, while he kept throwing concerned glances over at Bo.
    "Who were those men?"
"Don was my boss and Frankie was his . . . henchman. I worked for him for several years until I found out what he was really doing." Susan said.
    "Why were they after you?"
"They wanted the disk that I took." Susan said.
"What is so important about the disk, that they'd do this?" Luke asked.
"It has enough information to send them to jail for fraud amongst other things, they have done that isn't exactly law abiding." Susan said.
"How long have you had the disk?" Luke asked.
"All the time. I didn't know if they knew I had it. So I came here to hide till I thought it was save to go to the FBI. But they knew I had it. I don't know how they found me. I'm sorry for dragging y'all into this . . . I never meant to get you all involved and I never knew I was going to fall in love." Susan said.
"It's okay." Luke said, trying to think about why he had recently been fighting with Bo, though Susan could see something in his eyes and knew something was wrong.
    "What's wrong?" Susan asked.
"I guess I really wasn't over you and . . . I was blaming Bo for stealing you away." Luke admitted, feeling silly for ever thinking such a thing.
"Bo didn't steal me away from you, it was over between us a long time." Susan said.
"I know. I thought so too. But seeing you again, all those feelings came back . . . I know I was just being stupid. I really am happy for you and Bo." Luke said.
Susan only smiled. "You aren't stupid Luke, just a little misguided."
Luke smiled, growing concern by the cold feeling Susan's skin was beginning to take.
"Tell Bo I love him." Susan said suddenly.
"You can tell him after." Luke said.
Susan shook her head. "No I can't . . . tell him I loved him. And please be sure the FBI gets the disk."
Luke nodded. "They will pay for this and you will be around to see it."
The sound of sirens filled the air. "Hear that help is almost here."
Susan only smiled. "It is too late. Goodbye Luke. Please tell Bo I love him, and I pray that none of this hurt your friendship with him . . ." Susan said, her voice trailing off.
"SUSAN!" Luke said loudly, gently shaking her, but it was too late she was dead.
Luke stood quietly as the ambulance attendants wheeled Susan from the cabin, her body and face covered with a white cloth. Luke picked up his bow and arrow, and followed behind as they wheeled Bo out. Bo was still out cold but his pulse was strong and steady. Luke wanted to be able to ride in the ambulance with Bo, wanting to be there if Bo woke up, so he wouldn?t hear about Susan from anybody else first, though there wasn't room in the ambulance. Luke followed behind the ambulance in the General, praying that Bo would be okay.
Luke called the farm hoping that Jesse and Daisy were back there. He was relieved that they were. He didn't want to tell them what happened over the phone so asked them to meet him at the hospital. About half an hour later Jesse and Daisy arrived at the hospital.
    "What happened?" Jesse asked.
Luke took a deep breath and slowly explained to Jesse what had happened, fighting back the tears that burned his eyes.
    "Susan's dead?" Daisy asked disbelievingly
Luke nodded.
"So Bo doesn't know yet?" Jesse asked.
"No sir, he was out cold when it happened . . . I hope the doctors don't say anything, I kind of want to be the one to tell him." Luke said.
Ten minutes later a doctor came out and walked over the Dukes.
    "How's my boy?" Jesse asked.
"He is doing fine. Only suffered mild cuts and bruise and a slight concussion. He is just starting to wake up. You can go in and see him now."
Jesse smiled. "Thank you doctor."
After the doctor walked away Jesse turned to Luke. "I think you should go in there alone first to tell Bo what happened."
Luke nodded in agreement and headed for the room Bo was in.
Luke took a deep breath and stepped into the room wondering just how he as going to tell Bo that Susan had been killed. Bo opened his eyes when he heard someone walk into the room, he smiled slightly at his cousin as Luke sat down on a chair beside the bed.
     “How you feeling?" Luke asked.
“Tired.” Bo replied, and yawned as though to punctuate his sentence. “I think that is from the stuff the gave me for the pain.”
“That’s good you really had me worried there for a while . . . I am glad that you are okay.” Luke said, wondering how to break the news to Bo. “I am sorry for the way I have been acting.”
     “It’s okay.”  Bo said.
Luke shook his head. “No it is not, I was acting like a jerk.”
“You said it, not me.” Bo said jokingly.
Luke smiled, glad that Bo wasn’t holding anything against him. Bo could see something a deep sadness in Luke’s eyes and knew that something was wrong.
     “What’s wrong Luke?” Bo asked.
Luke sighed. “I don’t really now how to tell you this easy . . . what is the last thing you remember?”
“Hearing you come into the cabin, why?”
“Um . . . Susan got shot. I couldn’t stop him.” Luke said.
“Oh God, is she okay?” Bo asked.
Luke was silent for a moment, he silence worried Bo.
“Is she okay?” Bo asked again.
     “She . . . died.” Luke said.
Bo’s face paled. “What?”
“Before the ambulance could even get there, she told me . . .” Luke started to say, but was cut short by Bo.
“You’re lying.” Bo said, staring at Luke, his blue eyes flashing with anger.
“I am not lying Bo. Why would I lie about something like this?”
“Just to get at me.” Bo said.
“I wouldn’t do that. You know that Bo.” Luke said calmly, knowing Bo was just lashing out like this, trying not to believe the woman he loved was dead.
“Yes you would. Lately you’ve done anything to get at me.” Bo said.
“I am sorry Bo I was out of line before but this is the truth. You know I wouldn’t lie to you.” Luke said, gently placing a hand on Bo’s shoulder and looking his cousin in the eyes.
Bo just looked at Luke for a moment, then his blue eyes began to swim with tears.
“I’m sorry Luke . . .” Bo said softly, unable to stop the tears he began to cry over Susan’s death.
“Shh . . . it’s okay Bo.” Luke said softly, giving his younger cousin a comforting hug.
Bo leaned his head on Luke’s shoulder, not even bothering to try to hide his tears.
“Why her . . . how did it happen . . . it’s not fair.” Bo mumbled softly, his voice choked with tears.
Luke just held Bo, allowing his younger cousin to cry on his shoulder, until Bo had no more tears left. Bo sat back against the pillows, and wiped the drying tears from his cheeks. His eyes reflected the deep heart felt pain he was in.
“I am really sorry Bo, I tried to save her . . .” Luke said.
“I know you’dve done everything you could to save her. How did it happen?” Bo asked.
Luke took a deep breath and slowly released it and then told Bo everything Susan had told him about who attacked her and why. “She wanted me to tell you how very much she loved you.”
Bo sat listening quietly, his eyes wavering with fresh tears.
“I am sorry Bo. I know how much you loved her . . . I am so sorry.” Luke said.
Bo just looked at Luke, his bottom lip trembling; he didn’t trust his voice to say anything.
“The FBI are going to find them and they will be locked away for a long time, they won’t get away with this.” Luke said, his hand still on Bo’s shoulder, he wished there was more he could do to take away Bo’s pain.
Bo was released from the hospital the next morning, with no sign or any damage from the concussion. Later that night Bo sat outside on the porch swing, not swinging, just staring up at the stars overhead. The next afternoon was Susan’s funeral in Atlanta. Luke came outside and sat down next to Bo.
     “Hey Bo, how you doing?”
Bo just shrugged, not even turning to look at his cousin.
“I think we need to talk.” Luke said.
     “About what?” Bo asked.
“About everything that happened . . . before this tragedy about the way I was acting.” Luke said.
Bo turned and looked at Luke. “What do you mean?”
Luke sighed. “I don’t know if now is the best time to talk about this but I don’t think it should wait any longer.”
     “Why is that?” Bo asked.
Luke took a deep breath, and slowly released it, and began to tell Bo why he was acting they way he was. Luke expected to see anger in Bo’s eyes, and was surprised to see none, all he saw was understanding.
“Why didn’t you say anything before all of this?” Bo asked.
“I didn’t want to be jealous . . . I wanted to be happy for you. I tried to ignore the feeling but they just got too hard to hide.”
“If you said something we could’ve found a way to work it out with nobody getting hurt.” Bo said.
“I know. I had no right to act they way I did. You aren’t too mad at me are you?” Luke asked.
Bo shook his head. “At the time I was but not now. I can never stay mad at you for very long.”
Luke smiled. “That works both ways.”
The next morning the FBI got Don and Frankie. Later that week at a trial they were charged with murder, attempted murder along with fraud and several other charges brought about from the disk. They were both sentenced to fifties years at the Atlanta State prison.
Bo sat quietly at Susan’s funeral, crying until he had no tears left to cry. It took Bo a few months before he even thought of dating anyone again. He knew that Susan would want him to go on dating other women and to try to find love again. He knew she wouldn’t want him to spend the rest of his life alone. Bo and Luke’s friendship didn’t suffer at all, if anything it only grew stronger. Anytime that Bo got depressed over Susan’s death, Luke was always right there to cheer him up, always seeming to know just what to say. Eventually, after almost a year, things returned back to what passes for normal in Hazzard County.
