It was a day like most any other in Hazzard County.
The sun shone over the small town, and as usually Bo and Luke were being
chased by Sheriff Coltrane. Bo glanced into the rear view mirror and saw
that the patrol was still remaining about the same distance behind them.
“What does he want anyway?” Bo asked. “We ain’t
even speeding.”
“I got no idea what he wants this time, but let’s
not stop and ask, just lose him.” Luke replied.
“Yes sir.” Bo said jokingly.
Bo increased sped and turned the General Lee onto Ridge Runner’s road.
Rosco still followed.
“Hot pursuit. I love it, I love it.” Rosco cooed
happily to his faithful basset hound Flash. “We’ll get em this time Flash.”
Flash lazily lifted her head and woofed. Rosco tried to keep up to
the Duke boys, but they were quickly pulling away.
In a matter of moments Bo managed to lose the patrol car, and headed
back towards the Duke farm. They came to a stop out the house, and climbed
out the windows of the car, as the doors are welded shut. They walked into
the house; Jesse and Daisy were busily preparing dinner.
“Sorry we’re late. We had to lose ol’ Rosco.” Luke
said.
Late that night an older couple sat in their hotel
room. The woman sat in a large plush chair, she brushed back a lock of
her blonde hair, as she sat staring at a newspaper clipping.
“Do you think that we have finally found him, Edward?”
She asked.
“I am not sure Katherine, the picture sure looks
like it is him.” Edward replied.
Katherine smiled. “I hope so. It has been twenty years. I pray that
at long last we have found him and that justice can be brought upon those
who stole our son from us.”
“We will know after we arrive in Hazzard County
tomorrow morning.” Edward said.
Early the next morning a black Rolls Royce pulled
to a stop in front of the Sheriff’s station. Edward and Katherine got out
of the car and walked into sheriff’s station. Rosco and Boss were busily
making plans when they heard someone enter. Boss looked at the elegantly
dressed couple that had just entered the building and walked over to them.
“I am Commissioner J.D Hogg, what can I do for you?”
Boss asked.
“I am Edward Braeden, this is my wife Katherine.
We want some information on someone.” Edward said handing boss the clipping,
“Do you know this person?”
Boss immediately recognised the person in the picture to be Bo Duke.
“Yeah, that’s Bo Duke. What do you want to know about him?”
“We believe that he is our son that was stolen when
he was just a little baby.” Edward said.
Boss was shocked to hear that. “What?” He questioned.
Rosco had been listening to the conversation. “Are you saying that
Bo Duke ain’t a Duke?”
“We are not sure. But this picture looks like it
could be our son who was abducted when he was two months old. We want to
find him to discover the truth. But we are quite sure that this Bo Duke
is really our son Gavin.” Edward said.
“Well Bo never did come to Hazzard until he was
around two months old come to think of it.” Boss said.
“Can you tell us where we could find him?” Edward
asked.
“Of course, I’ll give you the address to the Duke
farm.” Boss said.
Boss wrote the address down and told Edward how to get there.
“Thank you for your help Mr.Hogg.” Edward said then
him and Katherine left.
Bo and Luke were out in the farmyard doing chores,
Daisy was hanging a load of wash and Jesse was feeding the animals. They
heard a car approaching and they looked up to see a black Rolls Royce approaching
the farm.
“That’s some car.” Bo said. “Wonder whose it is?”
“And what they want with us?” Luke added.
Edward and Katherine looked over at where Bo was standing next to Luke.
“Our son shouldn’t be reduced to having work on
some grubby old farm.” Katherine mumbled.
Edward remained silent, he pulled the car to stop in front of the Duke
farm. Edward and Katherine stepped out of the car. Jesse walked over to
see what the strangers were doing on his farm.
“Can I help you folks?” Jesse asked.
“In a manner of speaking. I am Edward Braeden and
this is my wife Katherine. Twenty years ago our infant son was stolen.
He was never found, at least until now.” Edward said, his voice sound harsh
and cold.
“I don’t see what that has to do with us Dukes.”
Jesse said.
“It is simple Mr. Duke, since it was your family
that stole our son.” Edward said.
“What are you talking about?” Jesse said unable
to believe what he was hearing.
Edward showed Jesse a picture of the son. “This is a picture of our
son taken a few days before he was stolen. I think even you can see the
resemblance.”
Jesse stared at the picture of the baby, it looked exactly like Bo
how looked as a baby. The Duke cousins could tell that Jesse was upset,
they wonder exactly what these people wanted. Luke and Bo walked over to
see what was wrong. Jesse told them what Edward had told him. Bo just stared
at the two strangers in disbelief.
“Is this some kind of joke?” Bo asked.
“It is no joke.” Edward responded. “Of course for
absolute proof we will have a DNA test done to prove that you are Gavin
Braeden.”
“I can save you the time. That ain’t who I am. I
am Bo Duke. I don’t care what lies you are trying to claim.” Bo said.
“It is not lies. It is the truth, you are our son.”
Katherine said.
Bo didn’t know what to say part of started to wonder if it was the
truth. They decided that tomorrow they would have the DNA tests done.
Bo sat on the old porch swing, staring out
into the darkness of the night, not swinging just sitting perfectly still.
Luke stepped out on to the porch and sat down next to Bo.
“How you doing?” Luke asked.
Bo shrugged. “What if I am not a Duke?”
“That ain’t possible.” Luke said.
“What if it is though?” Bo asked.
“I don’t know, so what if you aren’t?”
“If I ain’t then I don’t really know who I
am.” Bo said.
“You’ll still be who you’ve always been, a
name doesn’t change that.” Luke said.
Bo sighed as he stared up at the pale moon that shone over head. “Yes
it does. It means I am not a part of this family.”
“No matter you will always be a part of this
family. You have always been like a brother to me and I can tell you that
Jesse, Daisy and I all love you very much, you know that.”
Bo nodded slightly. “Yeah . . . I am just scared that come tomorrow
my whole world is going to fall apart.”
Luke put a hand on Bo’s shoulder. “Don’t worry Bo, no matter what I
will be there for you.”
Bo looked at Luke and smiled. “Thanks.”
Morning seemed to come early to the Duke farm;
they all sat around eating breakfast in silence, nobody wanting to think
about the fact that Bo might actually not be a Duke. It was a dull grey,
overcast day, the weather seeming to reflect their mood. After breakfast
they headed to the hospital in Atlanta, Jesse and Daisy took Jesse’s old
white pickup truck, while Bo and Luke took the General.
They had no sooner walked into the hospital when
they were greeted by Edward and Katherine. They smiled at Bo, acting very
cold to the rest of the Dukes, positive that Bo was their son Gavin. Bo
was nervous as he followed a doctor into a back room where the blood testing
would be take place. Bo sat down on a large, plush, black leather chair,
trying to hide how nervous he was. Bo flinched slightly as the young doctor
injected a needle into the inside of his left arm. Bo had never liked needles,
and turned his head away not wanting to see the doctor draw his blood.
The doctor drew two small vials of Bo’s blood for testing, and then he
took Bo back to the waiting room. Bo walked over and stood with his family,
casting a small glance over at Katherine and Edward, wondering if they
were his parents.
“How long will the tests take?” Edward asked.
“A few hours. They should be ready around one. So
you can all just come back later.”
Katherine took a couple of steps towards Bo, when Edward put a hand
on her arm to stop her. He whispered something into her ear, soft enough
for only her to hear. Her eyes looked sad as she nodded and then followed
him out of the room.
“Let’s go get something to eat for lunch.”
Jesse said, and the Dukes then left the hospital.
As Bo and Luke walked over to where they had
parked the General, Luke noticed the distant wondering look in Bo’s eyes.
“Are you okay?” Luke asked, genuine concern
could be heard in his voice.
“I guess so, I was just thinking about if
they are my parents. I mean there is a resemblance, don’t you think?”
Luke shrugged. “Maybe kind of. Do you want them do be your parents?”
“I don’t know.” Bo said.
Luke decided not to push the issue, he had a feeling that Bo already
knew the answer, whether he wanted to admit it or not Luke felt that deep
down Bo already knew the truth.
The hours seemed to pass almost like minutes
and the Duke’s and Braeden’s arrived at the hospital at the same time.
The same doctor as before greeted them, and took them to his office to
tell them the results. The small office was crowded with seven people.
Bo’s eyes never left the file that sat on the desk, he knew the answer
to who he was, was in that folder.
“The results are ninety-nine point nine percent
positive.” The doctor said, sliding the file over to be in front of Bo.
Bo took a deep breath and with a trembling hand he opened the folder,
his eyes immediately seeing the result, the words stand out as though they
were on fire, he was Gavin Braeden. Bo just stared blankly at the name
wanting to refuse to believe what he now knew was true, he wasn’t a Duke,
his whole life had been a lie. Luke knew immediately from Bo’s pale expression
what the test results said, he put a hand on Bo’s shoulder. Bo looked up
at Luke, his dark blue eyes sparkling with the truth Luke knew.
“What do the results say?” Jesse asked.
“I . . .I am . . .their son.”
Jesse seemed to pale, he couldn’t believe that Bo wasn’t really a Duke,
that he really wasn’t his nephew. Katherine and Edward only smiled, having
known what the results would prove the whole time. Katherine leaned forward
in her chair to give her long lost son a hug; Bo felt Edward’s hand on
his other shoulder. Bo didn’t know how to react, his world feeling as though
it was crumbling around him, leaving him not knowing who he was or where
he belonged. Bo stood up and ran out of the door, before anyone could even
react Luke was out the door following after Bo’s retreating figure.
Luke finally caught up to Bo outside of the
hospital. Bo was sitting on the ground underneath a large tree. Luke walked
over and sat down beside him, for almost the first time in his life he
wasn’t sure what to say to Bo.
“How you doing?” Luke asked.
Bo lifted his head to look at Luke, his dark blue eyes swimming with
unshed tears. Bo wasn’t sure what to say, and was afraid that if he tried
to say anything that he would break down crying, so he only shrugged. Luke
put a hand on Bo’s shoulder.
“I know this is all hard for you, do you want
to talk about it?”
Bo took a deep breath and slowly released it. “I . . . feel as though
my world just came to a crashing halt. I don’t know who I am anymore or
where I belong.”
Luke wished he could find the words to end Bo’s pain, but had no idea
of what to say, he knew all he could do was to be there for Bo. Bo felt
a couple tears slide down his cheeks and quickly wiped them away before
Luke could notice them.
“What am I suppose to do now?” Bo asked, almost
counting on Luke to have all the answers, as normally he did.
“What do you mean?” Luke asked, not quite
sure what Bo had meant by the question.
“Where do I go? I mean they are my parents
. . . my real family. Do I go with them or do I stay at the only home I
can ever remember with the only . . . family that I have ever known. I
mean now that I know I am not a Duke . . . do I still belong at the farm?”
“It don’t matter that you aren’t a Duke, Jesse,
Daisy and I all love you as though you are a part of the family, no matter
what you will always be a part of the family. You are my best friend, you
always have been and always will be, but this is one time I can’t give
you the answers. You have to decide where you feel you belong.” Luke said.
“I don’t even know my parents, I have no memories
of them, how am I suppose to know if I belong with them?”
“I don’t know, perhaps you should get to know
them and then make your decision.” Luke said.
Bo nodded. “Yeah. Thanks Luke.”
“For what?”
“Having the answers. You always just seem
to know just what to say.”
Luke only smiled, saying nothing. They stood up and walked back into
the hospital, quickly finding the others.
Katherine rushed over and hugged Bo, overjoyed
to have her long lost son back again, he was the only child that they ever
had. Bo returned her hug, even though he didn’t really know her she was
his mother.
“I was so worried, why did you take off like
that?” Katherine asked.
“I just needed to clear my head, this is all
just a little too much.” Bo said.
Katherine nodded her eyes full of understanding she was just glad to
have her son back after so many long years of searching. Edward walked
over and gave his son a hug, then he turned and looked at Jesse, glaring
coldly at the older man.
“You can expect to be hearing from our lawyers
soon Mr. Duke.” Edward said.
“What? What are you talking about?” Bo asked.
“On charges of kidnapping.” Edward said.
Bo shook his head. “You can’t do that.”
“They took you from us Gavin and that is kidnapping.”
Edward said.
Bo frowned he hated to be called Gavin it just didn’t feel right. “Please
just call me Bo, it is the name I have gone by for twenty years.”
Katherine sighed and then smiled. “Very well, whatever makes you happy.”
“I am sure there is an explanation for all
of this, so please don’t sue my uncle Jesse.”
“He is not your uncle just some dirty old
farmer, you come from much better class then any of them.” Edward said.
“You never should’ve been made to work on
some dirty old farm.” Katherine added.
“I liked it. It don’t matter what “class”
anyone comes from that doesn’t make a person. You can’t try to sue them
for kidnapping there has to be a more reasonable answer.” Bo said, and
looked at his father. “Please understand that they are the only family
I have ever known, it don’t matter that there is no blood they are still
my family.”
Edward seemed to ponder what Bo was saying for several minutes and
then nodded. “Very well Gavin . . . I mean Bo.”
Bo smiled. “Thank you sir.”
“So you are returning with us?” Katherine
asked.
Bo nodded. “For now at least. I have to find out who I am and where
I belong.”
Bo walked over to where Daisy was standing and gave her a hug, which
she returned, he could feel her tears on his shoulder.
“It’ll be okay Daisy, no tears okay?”
Daisy bit back her tears and nodded, hating the thought of Bo going
away, maybe forever. Bo stepped away and walked over to Luke, locking eyes
with him, he could see even Luke had tears shimmering in his pale blue
eyes. They hugged farewell.
“Remember I’ll always be there for you.” Luke
said softly.
“I know.” Bo said, his voice just as soft.
The last one he went to say goodbye to was Jesse, not too sure how
to say goodbye to him. Jesse stood trying hard not to cry, knowing all
of this was already hard enough on him. Bo’s bottom lip trembled and tears
threatened to start. Jesse pulled Bo into hug, holding the young man, who
he had always thought was his youngest nephew, close. Bo hugged Jesse,
leaning his head on the old man’s shoulder. They both knew that there
was no words to be said to express how they were feeling, no words to say
goodbye. Bo turned to follow Katherine and Edward from the room to start
his new life as a Braeden, turning to look at the Dukes one last time to
wave a final farewell, then left. Daisy broke down crying and stepped over
to Jesse, he pulled into a comforting hug, allowing her to cry on his shoulder.
He allowed his own tears to slide down his cheeks. Watching Bo leave with
those other people, even though they were his parents, made him feeling
like he was losing a son, he loved all the kids as though they were his
own, and just couldn’t believe that this was happening. Luke felt tears
burning his eyes but he refused to cry.
A few hours later the Braeden’s arrived at
their home, driving through the front gates. A long driveway led back to
the house, the roadway lined with trees and flowers, the whole yard beautifully
landscaped. Bo gazed in awe as his new home came into view, it was literally
a mansion, it was an old southern estate that had managed to go unburned
during the civil war. Bo climbed out of the car and stood staring
up at the house, unable to believe that this was actually his home, even
though it was big and grand a part of his heart longed to be at the small
three bedroom farmhouse back in Hazzard. Katherine walked over to Bo and
stood beside him, reminding herself that he wanted to be called Bo and
not Gavin, she decided that Bo wasn’t such a bad name after all.
“What do you think of your home? A lot better
then that shack back in Hazzard, isn’t it?’ Katherine asked.
Bo shrugged. “It’s nice and all but what makes a house a home is the
love inside.”
Katherine smiled. “Well we love you very much.”
Edward stepped over. “We are still going to look into your disappearance,
though we will abide by your wishes son, and not press any charges against
those Dukes, no matter what we find out.”
Bo smiled slightly. “Thanks.”
“We know you have grown up thinking that was
your family, so whenever you want any of them to come and visit, you are
welcome to have them over.” Katherine said.
Bo smiled, and followed his parents into the house. The entrance was
just as big as the farmhouse, the ceiling reach up high, and a spiral staircase
led to the second floor, a crystal chandelier hung down the middle of the
stairs.
“We’ll show you to your room. We can have
it decorated anyway you want after.” Katherine said.
Bo followed them up the stairs and to the second door on the right.
The room was huge, at least twice the size of the one he had shared with
Luke.
“We will get you some proper attire later.”
Edward said.
“What’s so wrong with jeans?” Bo asked.
“Nothing if you are going horse back riding,
but for around the house and to parties . . . we will have many elegant
parties now that you have come home.” Katherine said.
“You have horses?” Bo asked.
Katherine smiled. “Yes we do. We have won a number of blue ribbons
at some of the finest horse shows in North America.”
“Do you have anywhere around here to race
cars?” Bo asked.
Edward shook his head. “No son, however we can buy whatever cars you
want and build you a race track out in the yard somewhere.”
Bo didn’t know what to say to that, the thought of having his own personal
racetrack seemed overwhelming
“Well, cook probably has dinner ready, let’s
go see shall we?” Katherine said.
Bo followed back downstairs to the dining room. They say down at a
fine, old, oak dining table. The plates were made of bone china, the cutlery
fine silver. Bo looked at how many pieces of silverware were set by the
plate and found he had no idea what was proper to use for anything. There
was fine linen napkins, embroider with fine gold thread, clasped together
in a fine gold napkin ring. Bo’s hands were trembling as he unfolded the
napkin and laid it across his lap, it was one of the few things he knew
about proper edict, and he figured he would end up making a fool out of
himself in front of his parents.
“Don’t be so nervous Bo. Just start on the
outside of the silverware and move inwards. It is really easy to remember.”
Katherine said.
Bo smiled, gratefully for his mother’s understanding, then it struck
him as odd that he was siting eating dinner with his parents. For his whole
life, that he could remember, he had thought his parents were dead, now
he found his parents were alive and he was not who he had thought he was
his whole life. He was not a Duke at all, and he found out that he was
richer then anyone in Hazzard, even richer then Boss Hogg. The dinner progressed
on, and he talked to his parents a little as they ate the appetisers, the
soup and the salad. They said they were going to show him around the grounds
after dinner was over. The entrée arrived at the dinner table, lobster.
“Have you ever had lobster before?” Katherine
asked.
Bo shook his head. “No, but it looks like an over sized crawdad.”
After dinner Katherine and Edward showed Bo
around the grounds of the home, and within the home itself. The tour took
juts over two hours to complete. Bo still didn’t feel as though he was
very at home, he already missed Hazzard and Luke, Daisy and Jesse very
much. He wondered if he would ever grow accustomed to this place and being
one of the wealthiest families in the state. There was nobody around the
home that was anywhere near to Bo’s age, and Bo realised that he would
have nobody to talk to. He still found it hard to think of Katherine and
Edward as his parents, but in his heart he found he cared about them. Bo
laid awake that night thinking all these thoughts until he eventually drifted
off into a restless sleep.
Bo walked through the large fancy store with
his parents. Katherine was picking out everything she figured Bo would
need. The bill coming to more then Bo figured was in the Hazzard bank,
and he vaguely wondered just how rich his parents were.
“How do you want your room decorated?” Katherine
asked.
“Now honey, I think you have tired him enough
with this boring kind of shopping. Bo needs to get a good car, to be using
the racetrack that were are building for him.” Edward said. “What kind
of a car do you want?”
“Anything fast.” Bo said.
Edward smiled. “Well let’s go see what we can find.”
It didn’t take Bo long to decide on what car
he wanted, a red Lamborghini. The track had already been started that morning,
and would be ready for Bo to use in about a week. Bo thought about calling
home to Hazzard, but thought it was best if he waited a while, he needed
more time to adjust to being who he was and where he was before he could
decide where he belonged.
Time seemed to past quickly, for Bo he found
his new life to be quite different and at times still had a little trouble
adjusting to the more elegant style of living. He could tell how much his
parents loved him, and that they were desperately trying to make up for
all the lost years. Though he still missed the Dukes, the only family he
had known for most his life, he especially missed Luke, there large old
house seemed too quiet at times without Luke around to talk to. It had
been two full weeks since Bo had found out that he was not a Duke. He still
found that he had to remind himself for that when introductions were being
made, such as to friends of his parents and other family members, Bo soon
learned that his family had always been wealthy, one of the wealthiest
in the state. However, he didn’t feel that all the money made the difference,
it was the love of the family that matter, and Bo found that there was
just as much love in his new home as there had been in his old home, which
did not help decide were he truly felt he belonged.
Bo lay awake that night and tried to imagine
how different his life would be, if he had never been abducted from the
hospital, and never had been a Duke. He couldn’t help but think about
what it would’ve been like growing up with his real family, growing up
wealthy instead of always being broke. Bo wondered if it would’ve made
him a different person, or if he would be the same. As much as he hated
to admit it this was one time when money seemed to make all the difference
and he figured that he would be different if he had been raised here and
not in Hazzard as his whole upbringing would’ve been different. Bo
knew if that had been the case he would never have known Luke, who had
always been his best friend and there for him whenever he needed him. Bo
hadn’t got much sleep the whole time that he was there, those as well as
other thoughts tended to keep him awake until the early hours of the morning.
He hadn’t been feeling very well the past couple of days but contributed
that to his lack of sleep. Even though he often fatigued he still had trouble
falling asleep, and could never sleep long. His whole body tended to dully
ache, as though the muscles were all tensed. However Bo never told anyone,
he assumed it was just a lack of sleep and probably just a touch of insomnia
caused by current events.
Bo sat staring at the phone, debating calling
Luke to come there to visit. He found he greatly missed having Luke around
to talk to, though he wasn’t sure if he could handle the anxiety of try
to discover who he was, he still felt that he was Bo Duke, the Dukes being
his real family, even though he knew that wasn’t true. Bo decided that
he missed Luke far too much to keep avoiding him, he walked over to the
phone and dialled the number for the Duke farm.
Luke answered the phone on the second ring.
“Duke residence, Luke speaking.”
“Hey Luke.”
“Hey Bo, it’s so good to hear from you.” Luke
said. “How are you doing?”
“I’m fine.” Bo said. “How’s everyone there?”
“We’re all fine . . . we all miss you.” Luke
said.
“I miss y’all too.” Bo said.
“How are things there?” Luke asked.
“It’s different . . . I mean to be richer
then Boss Hogg . . .” Bo said, his voice trailing off, for moment. “It’s
hard to adjust sometimes.”
There was a moment of silence before either of them spoke again.
“I was just calling you to see if you’d like
to come by this way.” Bo said.
“Yeah, anytime.” Luke said.
“Tomorrow too soon?” Bo asked.
Luke chuckled. “No, not at all.”
“Good.” Bo said, then gave Luke the directions.
Bo paced around nervously as he waited for
Luke to arrive, he decided to wait outside in the small gazebo in the front
yard. It was an hour later when he heard the powerful engine of the General
Lee cut through the silence, and saw the orange car come into view. Luke
pulled to a stop and Bo rushed over before Luke even had a chance to get
out of the car. Luke climbed out and stood before Bo.
“Great to see you again.” Luke said.
Bo nodded, and gave Luke a brotherly hug, which Luke returned.
“This place is huge, bigger then anything
in Hazzard.” Luke said.
“It feels bigger then Hazzard itself at times.”
Bo said, and Luke could hear a hint of sadness in Bo’s voice.
“So how are you holding up?” Luke asked, having
to stop himself from calling Bo cousin.
Bo shrugged, not really knowing how to respond.
“I have my own race track.” Bo said. “Perhaps
we could run the General on it after.”
Luke nodded. “Yeah sounds great.”
Luke could see sadness in Bo’s dark blue eyes and it cut through his
heart, he still cared about Bo as though he were a brother and to see him
hurting upset him greatly.
“It’s really quiet around here.” Bo said.
“I guess I should show you around, kill a couple hours that way.”
They walked around in mostly silence as Bo showed Luke his new home,
neither really knowing what to say.
“Bo?”
“Yeah what?”
“Do you like it here?” Luke asked.
Bo was silent for a moment. “I don’t know. I care about my parents,
they are good people.”
“That’s not what I asked cousin.” Luke said.
Bo sighed, he didn’t really want to answer Luke’s question but knew
he had way of getting out of it.
“I don’t know. It’s quiet, I can have anything
I ever wanted . . .” Bo said, his voice trailing off.
“But do you like it here?” Luke asked again.
“You know you can always come back to the farm, no matter what you are
one of the family.”
Bo smiled, a smile that never touched his eyes. “I still don’t feel
I know who am I or where I belong. I know my parents love me, and so do
y’all. I feel like my life changed without me even knowing it.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to push the issue. I
have missed you a lot since you’ve gone, and part of me just wants to drag
you back the farm even if I got to hog tie ya.” Luke said.
Bo laughed. “I’ve missed you a lot too. One of the hardest things about
this is not being able to see you and Jesse and Daisy all the time . .
. y’all are my family. I have tried to think of how my life would be different
if I was raised here, and most the time the answers I think of scare me.”
“What do you mean?” Luke asked.
Bo ran his hands through his thick blonde hair, grateful that he could
talk to Luke just the same as he had his whole life. Luke had always been
there for him to help him solve all his life problems, though he knew this
was one problem that in the end he’d have to solve on his own.
“Well for one thing we never would’ve met.”
Bo said. “And you are my best friend, I can’t image not having you around.”
“I know what you mean, I feel the same way.”
Luke said.
“You do?”
“You know I do.” Luke said.
“I just wish that this was one more time that
you could tell me what to do.” Bo said.
“Sorry, you have to find the answer for yourself.”
Luke said.
“I know.” Bo said, his voice mumbled.
“The answer I could give you is what I want
but . . . if I was to do that it’d be like forcing you to do what I want
you to and not a choice that comes from the heart.” Luke said.
"Let me guess, you’d tell me to go back to
Hazzard, to the only home and the only family I have ever really known.”
Bo said, and sighed deeply. “C’mon let’s go look at the track, I’ll show
you my car.”
Luke nodded, relieved at the quick change of subject.
They were in the large garage, looking over
Bo’s car, deciding to race it against the General on Bo’s track. Luke closed
hood and was juts going to say they should go get the General Lee when
he noticed Bo’s pale complexion.
“Are you okay?” Luke asked, his voice filled
with genuine concern.
“I don’t feel so good Luke.” Bo said.
The words had no sooner left Bo’s mouth, when darkness overtook Bo’s
mind and he collapsed against Luke, who caught Bo in his strong arms.
“Bo . . . c’mon wake up.” Luke said, his voice
fraught with worry.
Luke heard the door of the garage open and turned to see Edward standing
there.
“What happened?” Edward asked, in an accusatory
tone.
“Bo said he wasn’t feeling good and then passed
out.” Luke said.
Edward looked sceptical of Luke’s answer, but seemed to accept it.
“We need to get him to a doctor.” Luke said,
and picked Bo up in his arms to carry him.
“Take him back up to the house, and we will
call a doctor.” Edward said, his voice sounded like an order, but Luke
could hear the concern for Bo’s well being.
Katherine looked up when she heard Edward
and Luke enter the house, noticing Luke carrying Bo’s limp body.
“What happened?” Katherine asked.
“Bo passed out.” Luke said.
“Lay him down on the couch here.” Edward said,
and Luke carefully laid Bo down on the soft, plush couch.
“I’ll go call Doctor Murray.” Katherine said.
The elderly doctor arrived twenty minutes later, he asked a few
simple questions as he examined Bo.
“How long as he been ill?”
“He never said anything before.” Katherine
said.
“He sounded tired, could this all just be
from a lack of sleep?” Luke asked, he knew Bo the best out of anyone there
and had noticed the small differences in Bo, but had just assumed it be
from the stress of the current situation.
“Maybe a little, however I think there is
more to it, concerning that he is not responding at all.” Doctor
Murray said. “I want to take him into the hospital and run a few tests.
Luke paced nervously around the waiting room,
wanting to be there for when Bo woke up, or the doctor came around with
more news. He could tell that Bo’s parents didn’t really like him, seeming
to blame him for their son’s disappearance, and Luke knew the only reason
they were tolerating him was for Bo’s sake.
It was nearly an hour later before Dr. Murray
came around.
“How is he?” Katherine asked.
“He is doing okay . . . for now.” Dr. Murray
said. “He has a rare condition known as Tycoplenima.”
“Will he be okay?” Edward asked.
The old doctor sighed deeply, hating to be the bearer of bad news.
“It depends.”
“On what?” Luke asked, speaking up for the
first time.
“If we can find a bone marrow donor.” Dr.
Murray said.
“Well myself or Edward can, after all we are
his FAMILY.” Katherine said.
“It is not that simple, we have to find a
match.” Dr. Murray said.
“What is Tycoplenima?” Luke asked.
“Like I said it is really hard, I can’t really
say why Bo has come done with it, nobody really knows. But the disease
attacks the whole body. It starts with fatigue and lose of appetite, then
increases in strength increasing blood pressure, and respiratory and heart
problems.”
“How long before it progresses?” Edward asked.
“It has already entered its second stage,
so it will only be days before he reaches the third, and final stage, it
is progressing quickly.” Dr. Murray said.
“Has he woke up yet?” Edward asked.
Dr. Murray nodded. “Yes, all of you can go and see him, he is in room
twenty-three.”
“Does he know about this disease?” Luke asked.
“Yes, I told him all about it.”
Edward and Katherine had already started off down the hall to Bo’s
room. Luke thanked the doctor and shook his hand before following them
down the hallway.
Edward and Katherine were standing on the
right side of Bo’s bed. Bo was just lying there, seeming quite unresponsive,
when Luke entered the room. Luke walked around the bed and stood beside
Bo.
“How you doin’ kiddo?” Luke asked.
“Tired, sore all over . . .” Bo said his voice
trailing off.
“Don’t you worry none you’re going to be up
and around again in no time.” Luke said, trying to hide his own worry from
his voice.
“Could you call Uncle Jesse and Daisy?” Bo
asked, looking up at Luke, who could clear read the fear in Bo’s dark blue
eyes.
“Yeah, I can go do that now.” Luke said, and
left the room.
Katherine looked down at her son. “Why do you want them here son? They
aren’t your family.”
“Family is a lot more then just blood . .
. they are the only family I have known my whole life, and I WANT them
to be here.”
“Okay son, just relax.” Edward said.
Before anything further was said Dr. Murray entered the room.
“If you would both like to come with me, we
can test you for being a bone marrow match, since you are his parents the
greatest possibility lies in you being a match.”
“And if we aren’t?” Edward asking, wanting
to know all the possibilities.
“Then we put out a general call to all donors
in hopes of finding a match.
“We will be back shortly, just try to get
some rest . . . Bo.” Katherine said.
Bo said nothing, he just closed his eyes and instantly began to drift
towards sleep.
Jesse answered the phone, surprised to hear
Luke’s voice, though he could from the tone of his nephews voice that something
was wrong.
“What’s wrong Luke?” Jesse asked.
“Bo’s sick . . . really sick.” Luke said and
told Jesse all he knew about the disease that Bo had. “He wanted me to
call you and Daisy, and have you come down here to the hospital.”
“We will be right there.” Jesse said, at the
same moment that Daisy came into the room.
Jesse hung up and turned to face his niece.
“Who was that Uncle Jesse? Where will be “right
there?” Daisy asked.
“That was Luke, Bo has taken ill.” Jesse said.
He finished explaining everything to her as the drove to the hospital.
When Luke returned to Bo’s room, Bo was still
asleep and his parents were still gone. He sat down beside Bo’s bed, and
just looked at him. Bo seemed so pale, and Luke could still see the worry
in his features even as he slept. Luke just sat there watching Bo sleep,
fearing what would happen if they never found a donor, worried of the pain
his best friend would then have to endure.
By the time Jesse and Daisy arrived, Edward
and Katherine were back in the room Jesse and Daisy walked over and stood
beside Luke.
“How are you doing honey?” Daisy asked.
“Since I am still breathing . . . I guess
I am okay.” Bo said, trying not to let the whole situation bring him too
far down.
They visited for several moments before Dr. Murray entered the
room with the test results.
“Well, just get right to the point? Which
one of us is a match?” Katherine asked.
“Neither. I am afraid that neither of you
had a match.”
“But you said since we are his parents there
would be a match.” Katherine said.
“I said the possibility was greater, I didn’t
say it was definite.” Dr. Murray said.
“So what do you do now?” Luke asked.
“Try to find another donor.” Dr. Murray said.
“Well then I want to be tested.” Luke said.
“Me to.” Daisy said.
“We all want to be tested.” Jesse said.
“I do not mean this as an insult, but I am
afraid at your age you can not donate bone marrow.” Dr. Murray said.
Jesse nodded, knowing that he only couldn’t be tested for medical reasons,
even though he desperately wanted to be tested, wanting nothing more then
to help Bo.
“If the two of you will come with me, we can
have you tested.”
Hours passed and nobody did much talking,
Bo spent most that time drifting in and out of sleep. Dr. Murray came into
the room, this time with a smile on his face.
“Looks like we found a match.” Dr. Murray
said.
“Who?” Edward asked.
“Lukas Keefer Duke.” Dr. Murray said.
“Figures.” Bo said, and his parents gave him
a questioning look, though all the Dukes understood Bo’s comment.
“We can get a room, the surgery will be tomorrow
afternoon at one.” Dr. Murray said.
“Can’t Luke and I just stay in the same room?”
Bo asked.
“Not with you being in a private room.” Katherine
said.
“So I’ll go into a different room.” Bo said.
“If that is what you want, I’ll make the arrangements.”
Dr. Murray said.
“Thank you doctor.” Bo said.
Jesse and Daisy went to get a coffee, relieved at the good news
of Luke being a match for a bone marrow donor for Bo. Luke went with the
doctor to fill out papers, so Bo was left alone in the room with his parents.
“Why do you want to be sharing a room with
Luke, when you can have your own room?” Katherine asked.
“Luke is my best friend, no matter what, we
always shared a room at the farm and now more then ever I want to do that
again.” Bo said, not saying because he was afraid of the operation and
having Luke there would be like a young child with their security blanket.
“Why did you say it figures that Luke is a
match?” Edward asked.
“Because my whole life Luke has always been
the one I could depend on to help me and to . . . save me whenever
I got into a situation that I couldn’t get myself into, so it just figures
that this time would be no different.” Bo said.
“Oh.” Katherine said, still not really understanding
the bond that existed between Bo and Luke.
Bo changed rooms, to be in room fifty, with
Luke. Luke was already in the room, sitting on his bed, waiting when everyone
else arrived. The beds they were in mirrored the exact same position that
their beds at the Duke farm were.
Jesse, Daisy and Bo’s parents stayed and visited
until Dr. Murray informed that visiting hours were over and that they would
have to leave. Bo and Luke were not allowed to have any food or drink for
the rest of the night before the operation the next day. Sharing the room,
as the where, seemed to help both of them remain calm before the operation.
They stayed awake until around three o’clock in the morning, talking, just
as they always had at home, talking about everything except the operation
and the current situation.
The next morning Dr. Murray came into the
room and explained the whole situation to them, telling them the operation
would take two hours to perform. At around twelve thirty, a young nurse
came into the room to give Bo and Luke an injection that would put them
to sleep for the operation. The nurse stood beside Bo’s bed, and tapped
the air bubbles out.
“I hate needles.” Bo said, closing his eyes
as she prepared to give him the injection.
“Just try not to think about.” Luke said,
knowing Bo’s fear of needles.
“OW!’ Bo complained as the needle sank below
the surface of his skin, he opened his eyes and rubbed at where he had
just been injected. “It is IMPOSSIBLE not to think of it as the SHARP tip
of the needle sinks through the surface of my flesh.”
Luke chuckled. “You over exaggerate.” Luke said, barely even noticing
the needle as he received his injection.
They both started to drift of to sleep.
“See you on the flip side.” Luke said.
“Yeah see ya cuz.”
The Dukes and the Braeden’s sat in the waiting
room, anxiously awaiting order on the operation, not speaking to one another.
The operation was running smoothly was no side effects, for either Bo or
Luke. Dr. Murray hoped it would be successful, he knew there was a small
chance that Bo’s body would not accept the new bone marrow, but kept his
fingers crosses, after all the operation was seeming to run smooth and
so far had no side effects. The operation was finished shortly after three,
though Dr. Murray would allow them to go back and see the boys yet, as
they were both still asleep and needed their rest.
Bo and Luke didn’t wake up until three-thirty,
waking up at almost the exact same time, groggily opening their eyes.
“Luke?”
“Yeah, what Bo?”
“I have to talk to you about something.” Bo
said, but before he could say anything further Dr. Murray walked into the
room.
“I’m glad to see that you two are awake, how
are you feeling?”
“Surviving.” Bo said.
“About the same.” Luke said.
“I’ll go tell your families that you have
woken up.” Dr. Murray said and left.
Luke’s heart felt heavy, hearing the reference to him and Bo not being
family.”
“What was it you wanted to talk about?” Luke
asked.
“It can wait . . . I guess I may as well tell
everyone.” Bo said, after all that had happened and thinking long and hard
about it Bo finally had the answer he had been looking for, he knew who
he was and where he felt he belonged.
Jesse, Daisy, Edward and Katherine came into
the room. Bo and Luke answered the first, basic question that everyone
wanted to asked, saying that they were okay. Dr. Murray also came back
into the room.
“When can they be released?” Jesse asked.
“Tomorrow, as long as neither show any signs
of any side effects from the operation, and to be sure that Bo’s system
accepted the donor bone marrow.” Dr. Murray said.
“I thought because it was a match that there
was no problem.” Daisy said.
“There is a small chance that his body will
reject it, but I have never personally since that case in any of the numerous,
similar, operations I have performed.” Dr. Murray said. “Bo will also have
to come back in a couple days for a check-up.”
“Can’t we just take Bo home now?” Katherine
asked. “WE have enough money we could afford a nurse.”
“No, it is best he stays here.” Dr. Murray
said, and left the room, ending the discussion.
“I have something I want to talk about with
all of you.” Bo said.
“What is it, son?” Edward asked.
“Lately I have been struggling trying to find
the answer to who I am really am.”
“You are our son.” Katherine said.
“It is a lot more then that . . . it’s like
a whole question of identity, not just a name or who is blood family, more
who I am as a person I guess, and everything that has made me who I am.”
Bo said, stopping to take a deep breath, and slowly releasing it. “I have
always been trying to ask myself where I belong.”
“Well that is easy you are our son, you belong
with us.” Edward said.
“Things are not always so black and white.”
Bo said.
Luke felt as though he was holding his breath, knowing Bo had found
the answers he had been searching for, he was glad that Bo had resolved
the issue though was worried about losing Bo to his “real” family.
“I finally found the answers . . . it took
me a while but . . . I know who I am and where I belong.” Bo said.
“What answers did you come up with?” Katherine
asked.
“Well I guess that I am who I always have
been my whole life . . . Bo Duke, blood don’t change that, it is just who
I am.” Bo said.
“No, it is not, you are our son.” Katherine
said. “Don’t you love us?”
“Yes I do, you are my biological parents but
the Dukes are my family. I belong in Hazzard.” Bo said.
Katherine started to cry, feeling as though she was losing her son
all over again.
“Please try to understand, I am sorry if I
hurt you but . . . no matter in my heart I will always be a Duke.” Bo said.
“Will you ever at least visit . . . or just
even keep in contact?” Katherine asked.
“Of course.” Bo said.
A tense silence filled the room, and after an hour the Braden’s said
their farewell’s telling Bo that they would be back he next day before
he was releases, and that they would cover all the medical bills.
Jesse and Daisy sat between the two beds,
it was a long time before anyone even spoke, when Jesse spoke up, breaking
the silence.
“You are right Bo, you always have been and
always will be a Duke.” Jesse said.
“Thanks Uncle Jesse.” Bo said.
Jesse gave Bo a hug, his heart overjoyed, to have his youngest nephew
back, and that they were all a family again.
Later that night, long after visiting hours
were over, Bo and Luke lay awake talking.
“I’m glad that you finally found the answers
you’ve been looking for.” Luke said.
“I guess there really only ever was one answer,
nothing could change who I am . . . I guess in the case blood ain’t
thicker then water.” Bo said.
“Blood has nothing to do with being a family,
it’s all in the heart.” Luke said.
“Words of wisdom by Luke Duke.” Bo said, in
a joking tone.
“Well have you listened to yourself these
past few hours?”
“Guess I caught it from you . . . must be
a side effect from the bone marrow.” Bo said.
“You know . . . if you wanted to get technical
after that operation you do have some Duke in you, more then just in heart
and spirit.”
“Yeah, I guess that’s true, ain’t it?”
“You better believe it.” Luke said.
Bo and Luke were released the next day with
no complications from the surgery, and Bo’s check up showed that his body
had accepted the new bone marrow. Weeks past and Bo had little contact
with his parents. It was a month later, when they came to the farm, with
papers that from a private detective who had managed to find out what had
happened to Bo. Only the boys and Jesse were home at the time, Daisy was
at work.
“Bo was kidnapped by baby smugglers and put
up for adoption, at a clinic that was the front for the operation, the
babies were sold to people, unsuspecting the baby they were adopting was
kidnapped from his rightful parents.” Edward said.
“I told you that nobody here had anything
to do with it.” Bo said.
Luke and Jesse left Bo alone, going outside to work in the yard, as
Bo visited with his parents. They stayed for a little over an hour, they
were sad about Bo’s decision to remain being a Duke, however they accepted
it, knowing to try to force Bo to return to their home would only shove
him away forever.
“If there is ever anything you need, don’t
hesitate to come to us.” Katherine said.
Bo nodded, then watched Katherine and Edward drive away from the farm.
Bo kept his promise and kept in occasional
contact with the Braden’s. In his heart though he would always be a Duke,
the same was true to Jesse, Daisy and Luke, Bo was a part of the Duke family.
Bo knew no matter what the Dukes would always be his real family. Hazzard
would be the only place he would ever really call home. Things returned
to what pass for normal in Hazzard, and the Dukes remained the tight knit
family that they always had been.
