The Storm
Dark clouds filled the sky, threating rain.
Though those dark clouds were not as black as the one that had passed over
Bo and Luke's friendship. Over the past week they barely spoke a word to
each other and when they did the words were spoken in anger. Both Jesse
and Daisy decided it was best just to stay out of Bo and Luke's fight and
not take sides. They hoped that the boys friendship was strong enough to
pull through this fight in tact, each day that passed though it seemed
less likely that they would ever again be friends. Jesse hoped that the
boys wouldn't carry this grudge around with them the rest of their lives.
He knew from experience that they would be sorry if they did. Their fight
wasn't really about anything major in fact the main reason for fighting
seemed to be forgotten already and they just squabbled about small insignificant
things. They would fight about small things like whose turn it was to do
what chores. Their four years age difference seemed to matter a lot, where
as before it never matter to them.
Bo released the arrow it flew through the
air and struck the target just missing the bullseye. Bo frowned.
"Ain't you ever learned to do that right?"
Luke questioned harshly.
"Oh, like you hit the bullseye every time."
Bo responded in much the same tone.
"More often then you." Luke said.
Bo gave an amused sounding laugh. "Yeah right cousin."
"It is a fact and you know it. I am a lot
better at this then you." Luke said.
Bo just mimicked Luke silently. Luke narrowed his eyes at Bo, a glare
which Bo returned. Daisy and Jesse were on the other side of the yard and
sighed to see Bo and Luke fighting again.
"I can do anything ten times better then you
can." Luke said.
Bo laughed. "Yeah right in your dreams. I am ten times the driver that
you are."
"Not quite Bo, I am easily the best driver
in these parts." Luke said.
"You think that just because you are older
that you are better at everything." Bo said.
"Well I am." Luke said.
"News flash cousin. "You AIN'T." Bo said.
Luke glared at Bo and raised his hand to strike him. Jesse who had
been watching the fight decided it was time to intervene.
"BOYS!" Jesse yelled firmly.
Luke seemed to ignore Jesse and he swung his hand to hit Bo. Bo just
stared unwavering at Luke. Luke stopped before actually striking Bo, his
hand just brushing against the side of Bo's face. Bo never even blinked.
"If Uncle Jesse wasn't here I'd give you a
beating you'd never soon forget." Luke said harshly, in a voice barely
above a whisper, so that Jesse couldn't hear.
"Yeah right you think that you actually could
still take me? You got another thing coming Luke." Bo said.
"You know that I could. I got Marine training
I could take you out easy." Luke said.
Bo rolled his eyes. "Oh I am so scared the big bad Marine."
"Why don't you do us all a favour and keep
your mouth shut." Luke said.
Bo glared at Luke, and went to respond, but Jesse had came over and
stood between the two of them.
"That is enough boys." Jesse said firmly.
Bo didn't say anything and walked over to where the General was parked.
"I'm out of here." Bo said.
"Good. I hope that you NEVER come back." Luke
said.
Jesse and Daisy watched as the General sped away from the farm in a
cloud of dust.
About an hour after Bo left it started to rain.
Jesse, Daisy and Luke went into the farmhouse. Nobody saying a word after
Bo had taken off.
Luke leaned against the wall and looked out
the window and watched the rain steadily beat down. The storm had gotten
a lot strong in the past few minutes. The rain had been just lightly coming
down now it had begun to pour. A strong wind had started as well. Luke
could hear Jesse and Daisy in the kitchen making dinner. Luke stood silently
listening to the steady beating of the rain against the window pane. He
hoped that Bo was in somewhere out of the storm. He started to think back
to what had happened only a few short hours ago, when he had fought with
Bo. He wished he hadn't, he really regretted all the things he had said
during the fight, he never meant any of them. He hated fighting with Bo,
although Bo was only his cousin he had always thought of him more as a
brother, since they had been raised together. Luke took a deep breath and
silently cursed himself for losing his temper the way he had, and saying
the things he had said to Bo. Daisy had come into the room and placed a
hand on Luke's shoulder, pulling him from his thoughts. Luke turned around,
slowly, to face her.
"You okay?" she asked concernedly.
"Yeah I'm fine."
"Your worried about Bo, aren't you?"
Luke turned and looked back out the window. "Yeah. This storm is getting
quite bad."
"I am sure that Bo is fine and is somewhere
out of the storm." Daisy said.
"I sure hope so." Luke said, and to himself
thought, ‘Considering the last thing that I said to him.'
The two of them then went into the kitchen
for dinner. Luke thought he heard a car pull up outside, he hoped that
it was Bo home. He jumped up from the table and looked out the small kitchen
window. But there was nobody there, he figured it must have just been the
wind. After Jesse had said grace everybody was silent. They were all too
worried about Bo. They hoped he was in somewhere safe and not still out
driving in the storm. As they sat silently eating their meal they listened
to the storm as it steadily grew worse. The wind seemed to howl, and the
rain beat so hard against the window that it sounded as though it would
surely break it.
Suddenly, a tree branch crashed through
the small kitchen window, startling everyone and breaking the silence.
For a second everyone sat in shock, their hearts racing. Luke was the first
one to get up, he looked around for something to cover the window with
to keep the rain from coming in. He noticed a board beside the fridge and
grabbed it. He pulled the branch from the window, and tossed it to one
side. Fortunately the board was the right size. Jesse had got up to help
and handed Luke nails and a hammer to put the board in place. As Luke covered
the window Jesse cleaned up the glass that lay strewn across the counter
and the kitchen floor. Daisy sat quietly at the kitchen table. After finishing
cleaning the mess up, Jesse and Luke sat back down at the table. Everyone's
desire to eat even less then it was before. Knowing how bad the storm was
and not knowing if Bo was okay had them fraught with worry. Luke felt guilty
about Bo being out in the storm as it was because of their fight he had
left the farm, other then that he would be safe at home with them. He felt
as though Jesse and Daisy were staring at him with blameful eyes, alougth
they weren't. It was just his own feelings of guilt that made him think
that they were blaming him.
Out on Willow Creek road, Bo was driving slowly
through the rain. The rain was coming down so hard that he could barely
see the road. Part of Bo knew that he should just stop and pull over to
the side, but he just didn't want to stop driving. He found that driving
always helped him to clear his mind when he was upset. Then there was a
bright flash of lightening that struck a tree, knocking it across the road.
Bo went to swerve to avoid the tree, but it was too late. The General slammed
head-on into the fallen tree. Bo was flung forward in the car, and since
he wasn't wearing a seat blet, he was tossed through the windshield of
the car. Bo struck his head on the hood of the General he rolled across
it. Darkness over took his mind as went unconscious. He fell limply from
the car and crashed to the ground. He lay unmoving on the cold wet ground,
becoming soaked by the pouring rain.
It was almost an hour later by the time another
came down the road. The car stopped behind the General, finding it curious
that the car was just stopped like that. A bright flash of lightening lit
the sky and the person noticed the car was crunched up against a fallen
tree, and caught site of someone laying on the ground next to the car.
The man got out of his car and rushed to check on the person. The first
thing he did was to check for a pulse. There was one, though it was quite
weak. He wondered how long the young man had been laying on the ground.
He carefully rolled Bo over, noticed several large cuts and bruises. He
saw the young man was soaking wet, and covered with mud and blood. Noticing
the shattered windshield he figured that Bo had been thrown from the car
when it hit the tree. He knew that he had to get this young man to the
hospital and not knowing how long he had been laying injured he knew there
wasn't time to wait for an ambulance. He carefully picked up the unconscious
person and put him in the backseat. He figured that the young man looked
to be in his early twenties, maybe about twenty one. He hoped that he had
found him in time to safe his life.
An hour later the phone rang at the Duke farm.
Luke rushed to answer the phone hopeful that it was Bo calling home that
he was okay.
"Hello." Luke said.
"Hello is this the Duke residence?" the voice
on the other end asked.
Luke felt his stomach tighten with worry, one thought ran through his
mind, Bo was hurt. "Yes."
"This is Dr. Gravis at Tri-County General.
I am calling to tell you that Beauregard Duke has been in an accident."
Luke paled and sallowed hard. "Yes he okay?"
"It is too soon to tell yet. He was badly
injured." Dr. Gravis said.
"We'll be right there." Luke said.
He hung up the phone, his hands shaking, he turned to face Jesse and
Daisy.
"Who was that?" Jesse asked.
"It was Tri-County General, Bo has been in
an accident." Luke said.
Jesse seemed to pale, and his face became drawn with worry. "Is he
okay?"
"They don't really know yet, they said he
was badly injured." Luke said.
The three of them went as quickly to the hospital as they could.
The storm was still raging on and prohibited them from driving to fast.
They found Dr. Gravis once they reached the hospital.
"How is he?" Jesse asked, his voice fraught
with worry.
Dr. Gravis sighed. "We managed to stop the internal bleeding, but there
was a lot of damage and he lost a lot of blood. We figured he was laying
injured around an hour before someone found him. He is in a deep comma,
and he stopped breathing on his own."
All the Dukes seemed to pale with worry at how badly injured Bo was.
The doctor led them to the room Bo was in.
Daisy buried her head against Jesse's arm
when she saw Bo laying the hospital bed. Luke rushed to Bo's side and gently
took his right hand and held it between his own. Bo looked so small in
hospital. Most his body was covered with bandages or casts. He was hooked
up to heart monitor which beat in a slow steady rhythm. There was an IV
needle in his left hand, which slowly dripped providing Bo's body with
the nutrients it needed. However the most disturbing site for them all
to see was the breathing tube that was coming out of Bo's mouth. Jesse
and Daisy walked over and joined Luke by Bo's bedside. Luke looked at Jesse
with teary eyes.
"This is all my fault Uncle Jesse." Luke said.
"No it is not Luke. It isn't your fault at
all." Jesse said.
"Yes it is. If Bo and I hadn't been fighting
he'd be safe at home right now." Luke said, he looked down at Bo then back
up at Jesse. "If anything happens to Bo the last thing I will have said
to him was in a moment of angry, and something I didn't mean."
Jesse put a reassuring hand on Luke's shoulder. "What happened to Bo
ain't you fault. You can't go blaming yourself. Bo wouldn't want to. And
Bo is going to pull through this fine."
Nobody spoke another word for several hours.
Jesse started to think back to just before his brother Gregory, Bo's father,
died. They had been fighting though now Jesse couldn't even remember why.
The last time he had seen him alive he had said some things he'd regret
forever things he never meant. He had never had a chance to tell him sorry
before he died. Jesse often thought that taken Bo in an raising up right
in a loving home was a way of apologizing. He had took Bo in and raised
him up and loved him as though he was his own child. Jesse pushed the memories
of the past from his mind focusing only on the present situation. He looked
at Luke sat on a chair beside Bo's bed, still holding on to his hand. Jesse
complete understand the feelings of guilt that Luke was going through.
He thought to himself he might tell Luke about what happened with Bo's
father if he could bring himself to tell the story. He prayed that Bo was
strong enough to pull through this, and wouldn't leave them.
The Dukes spent the night at Bo's side, none
of them getting any sleep. Later the next day Jesse and Daisy went back
to the farm to get some sleep, while Luke stayed at Bo's side
"Bo please wake up." Luke pleaded softly.
The only response to his plea was the steady beeping of the heart monitor,
and oxygen machine. Luke bit back the tears that burned in his eyes. It
pained him deeply to see his cousin laying there like he was. Luke sighed
he wished that Bo would wake up and just say this was all some kind of
a joke or dream, but he knew that wouldn't happen.
"I am sorry about earlier. I never meant any
of it. I am not mad at you." Luke said, and couple tears slid down his
cheeks.
Bo looked so pale and fragile in the hospital bed. Luke say silently
for a couple moments just holding on to Bo's hand, praying that at any
second Bo would move his fingers or do something to show a sign of life.
With every passing minute Luke became more worried that Bo would never
wake up and that Bo would die thinking he hated him.
"Please wake up Bo. I want to tell you sorry
to your face. I want to be sure you know I am sorry." Luke said, fighting
the growing urge to cry. "You can't die Bo, you can't leave us. I'd miss
you so much Bo. You are more then just cousin to me, you are my best friend
and have always been like a brother to me."
Luke found he couldn't keep from crying anymore, he hung his head and
allowed himself to cry. He didn't think that he would sleep that night,
but at around ten the lack of sleep the previous night caught up to him
and he fell into a restless sleep were he was haunted by a nightmare.
*******************
Luke walked down the road. The rain was steadily
beating down and he was completely soaked. He saw the General Lee up ahead
and ran towards it. His heart was racing as he reached the car, it was
smashed up against a large tree. The windshield had been busted out. The
glass from the windshield lay on the hood and the ground, the tiny shards
coated in dark red blood. Luke scanned the area frantically for Bo, though
saw no sign of him.
"BO!" Luke called out. No response came. "BO?"
Luke heard a shuffling noise from behind him, and he spun around. He
saw Bo standing there staring at him with dead eyes. Luke's heart sank
when he saw the condition Bo was in. He was soaking wet and covered with
blood and mud. His sink was deathly pale. Luke wanted to rush towards Bo,
but found himself frozen.
"It is your fault Luke." Bo said.
Luke shook his head. "I didn't know . . ."
"You got what you wanted. I'll NEVER be going
back to the farm. You win."
Luke felt tears in eyes. "I didn't mean that. It is not what I wanted."
"I HATE you Luke." Bo said.
"Bo, I didn't mean none of what I said before
I . . ." Luke said his voice trailing off.
The scenery around him started to spin and he closed
his eyes. When he opened them he was standing beside Bo's hospital bed.
Jesse and Daisy stood on the other side their heads were hung and they
were crying.
"Uncle Jesse . . . Daisy, what's wrong?" Luke
asked.
They didn't respond or look up to acknowledge his presence. He looked
down at Bo, and saw he was disconnected from all the machines. Luke slowly
reached out towards Bo, his hand trembling. He checked for a pulse, and
bit his lip to keep from crying out when he found there was none. A doctor
came in and covered Bo with a sheet and then they all left, none of them
paying any attention to Luke. Luke stood beside the bed, his whole body
trembling.
"This can't be happening . . . Bo can't be
dead." Luke mumbled.
Then Bo suddenly sat up the sheet sliding off of him. He glared at
Luke with hateful eyes. Luke stared blankly at Bo.
"Aren't you glad you won, Luke?" Bo questioned.
"You got your way. You hoped I'd never return to the farm now I won't"
"I didn't mean that I was angry, I didn't
mean none of what I said." Luke said.
Bo shook his head. "No. I know that you hate me Luke. I died knowing
how much you really hated me."
Luke frantically shook his head. "That is not true Bo. I don't hate
you, you are my best friend. I am sorry, Bo I am so sorry."
"It is TOO LATE to say sorry." Bo said.
**************
Luke woke up, his body was covered with a cold sweat.
He gulped deeply and looked at Bo, fearing he would sit up and say how
angry he was, or worse yet be dead. He leaned forward in the chair, and
looked at Bo. He could hear the steady beeping of the heart monitor and
the steady pumping sound of the oxygen machine. He held Bo's hand between
his own.
"I am sorry Bo, and I really hope you believe
that." Luke said softly.
He leaned on the edge of the bed, and watched lights of the heart monitor.
He couldn't fall back asleep after the nightmare, fearing he would have
another one. A few hours later he watched the dawn's early light start
to flood the room. He figured that Jesse and Daisy would be back to the
hospital in a few hours.
That night Jesse stayed with Bo while Daisy
and Luke went home. Daisy didn't think she could handle spending the night
alone in the hospital with Bo. She couldn't stand to see her little cousin
laying there like that.
Jesse sat quietly beside the hospital bed, looking at Bo. Saying
a silent prayer for Bo to wake up. It had been two days and there still
had been no improvement in Bo's condition. The doctors said if he didn't
wake up soon he might never. They said one good thing about his injuries
was he was unconscious right away and didn't suffer at all, while waiting
for help. Jesse started to think more about his past, his drifted back
as he remember the night Bo's parents were killed.
***************************
Jesse walked into the hospital, which was nearly
deserted, being as it was after two a.m. A doctor saw him and walked over.
"Can I help you?" the doctor asked.
"I am Jesse Duke. I received a phone call
to come." Jesse said, fearing what the doctor had to say. Knowing a phone
call so late only meant bad news.
"Oh yes, Mr. Duke. I am Dr. StClair, please
come with me."
Jesse followed the doctor down a series of hallways to a small room.
The first thing Jesse noticed in the room was a nurse holding Bo, who was
crying loudly, her words doing little to soothe his tears. Jesse walked
over and took Bo from her. Bo stopped crying instantly once in the familiar
arms of his uncle. Jesse noticed a couple deep purple bruises on Bo, and
looked questioningly at Dr. StClair.
"I think you had best sit down." Dr. StClair
said.
Jesse sat down on a chair.
"Your brother Gregory and sister-in-law Karen
were in an accident. They were on highway nineteen, just outside Capitol
City, out in the heavy rain. Near as we can figure he lost control of the
car and it spun into the path of an oncoming truck. She must have used
her body to protect Bo here. He escaped the accident with only minor injuries.
However Gregory and Karen were killed." Dr. StClair said.
Jesse couldn't believe what he was hearing. He hugged Bo closely and
fought back the tears that burned in his eyes.
***********************
Jesse pulled out of the flashback and looked at
Bo, tears filled his eyes. He didn't know what he would do if Bo didn't
pull through this. He tried to get some sleep but found it was near impossible,
the sound of all the machines kept him awake.
The next day Luke came back to the hospital
early in the morning. Daisy had gone to work that day. She figured there
was really nothing that she could do. She also thought that maybe going
to work and keeping busy would keep her mind off of what was going on.
Jesse smiled slightly at Luke as he walked
into the room.
"How is he?" Luke asked.
Jesse shook his head. "No different. The doctors are saying now there
might have been a lot of head trauma and he will never wake up."
"He just has to wake up." Luke said, his voice
sounded small and distant, like that of a scared child.
Jesse nodded. "All we can do is pray."
Luke sat down on a chair next to Jesse. Jesse could see the dark circles
under Luke's eyes and could tell he had gotten little sleep the past few
days. They sat in silence for nearly and hour.
"What if he doesn't wake up?" Luke asked.
"I don't want to think about that." Jesse
said.
"But what if it does happen?" Luke asked.
"It'll be my fault if he never wakes up."
"It is not your fault that Bo was in the accident."
Jesse said.
"In a way it is my fault. If we hadn't been
fighting, and I hadn't said the things I did, Bo wouldn't have taken off
like that." Luke said.
"You had no way of knowing." Jesse said, trying
to comfort his nephew, knowing just how he felt since he had gone through
much the same thing when he lost his brother Gregory.
"The last thing I said to Bo was I hoped he
never came back . . . looks like I might get my way on that." Luke said,
his voice slightly shaking. "I know that even if he dies he will never
forgive me and he'll die thinking I hated him."
"You didn't mean that, and Bo knows it. I
am sure he also knows that you don't hate him. If anything happens, and
I pray it don't, Bo wouldn't die blaming you. That is something you have
to believe." Jesse said.
"I want to believe that but . . ." Luke said,
his voice trailing off.
"But what?" Jesse asked.
Luke took a deep breath and slowly released it. "I have had these dreams
the past two nights. That Bo does blame me. He hated me for letting this
happen to him."
Jesse put a hand on Luke's shoulder. "It is just a dream."
"I know but it seems so real." Luke said,
trying to hide that he was close to crying.
"Do you want to tell me about your dreams?"
Jesse asked.
Luke took a deep breath and sallowed his tears, then proceeded to tell
his uncle all about his the dreams that he had.
"I know that all of this is hard on you, but
you can't blame yourself. It is not your fault. Even if Bo doesn't make
it through this you can't blame yourself." Jesse said.
"But it is my fault." Luke said.
"Did you cause the accident?" Jesse asked.
Luke shook his head. "No."
"Did you know it was going to happen?" Jesse
asked.
"No." Luke replied.
"Did you want the accident to happen?" Jesse
asked.
"Of course not." Luke said.
"Well then it is in no way your fault." Jesse
said.
"Then why does it feel like it is?" Luke asked.
"You don't understand what I am going through."
Jesse sighed. "Yes I do Luke. I have been through something just like
this before, when Gregory was killed."
"That was Bo's father, right?" Luke asked.
Jesse nodded. "I blamed myself for his death for a long time, before
I realised it was not my fault."
"What happened?" Luke asked, he never remembered
hearing how Bo's parents were killed.
He knew his parents had been killed in fire. One thing the Duke kids
never talked about with each other was how their parents had died. They
had all been very young at the time, almost too young to really understand
and by the time they were older they had moved on with their lives, and
didn't want to talk about it for fear of opening all those old wounds,
and that being old enough to understand it would only hurt more.
"They were in a car accident. There was heavy
rain and something went wrong with the car. Greg lost control of the car
and went into the path of an oncoming semi-truck. Bo was in the car to
and lucky to be alive. Karen used her body as a human shield to protect
Bo. They were both killed. Bo escaped with only bruises." Jesse said.
Luke sat quietly, listening intently, he realised that he had almost
never known Bo, and that he could've been killed all those years ago.
"I think it was just fate that Bo wasn't killed
all those years ago. Having him helped me to deal with what happened. And
the two of you are just so close, like brothers." Jesse said.
"Yeah but then I go and ruin our friendship."
Luke said.
Jesse shook his head. "You both were fighting and I doubt that ruined
your friendship. I know how close the two of you are, a little fight would
not destroy that."
Luke just nodded and allowed Jesse to continue with telling the story.
Jesse fought back the tears that burned in his eyes as he remembered the
past.
"A few days before the accident I had a fight
with Greg. I don't even remember what about, it was something so small.
We both said things we didn't mean and parted angry. I never had a chance
to tell him I was sorry. I blamed myself for a long time after that. And
was sad that I never had a chance to tell him I was sorry and never meant
the things I said. I know that must be how you feel right now." Jesse said.
Luke nodded, that was exactly how he was feeling.
"I can tell you it is not your fault, and
that nobody blames you, and that Bo wouldn't want you to be blaming yourself
. . . no matter how this turns out." Jesse said.
"What made you stop blaming yourself?" Luke
asked.
"I realised that Greg wouldn't me blaming
myself and he would know that I was sorry. Besides that I had Bo. I kinda
thought it was like apologizing to take Bo in, and keep him from being
sent to an orphanage. I raised Bo and loved him as though he was my own,
juts as I do all you kids. I felt it was just as good as saying sorry to
him, by taking Bo in like that and raising him up the way I knew Greg would
want." Jesse said.
Later that day Bo showed slight signs of improvement
and was breathing on his own. The tube was taken from his throat and he
just had oxygen hooked up around his nose. Jesse and Luke thought that
was a good sign that Bo might wake up soon, and was well on the road to
recovery.
Luke stayed at the hospital that night. He
sat quietly beside Bo's bed. It was around two in the morning and Luke
thought he saw Bo move slightly. He held Bo's hand between his.
"C'mon on Bo wake up." Luke said.
Bo moved his fingers slightly, and Luke smiled.
"That's it Bo wake up." Luke said.
Bo moaned softly and then his eyes fluttered open. Luke gave a sigh
of relief and smiled at his younger cousin. Bo returned the smile.
"How you feel?" Luke asked.
"Kinda like it is the morning after the night
before." Bo said.
Luke thought he should go get a doctor but he didn't want to leave
Bo's side either. He wanted to apologize first, he wanted to but his mind
at ease that Bo really did know he was sorry.
"Look Bo about what I said before . . . all
this happened, I am sorry." Luke said.
"You have nothing to be sorry for it ain't
your fault." Bo said.
"I mean about what I said. I shouldn't have
said any of that." Luke said.
"We both said things we didn't mean." Bo said.
"Yeah though I just want you to know I am
sorry." Luke said.
"I know, and I am sorry to." Bo said.
Luke smiled. "I defiantly didn't mean about not wanting you to come
back. That is the last thing in the world I'd want."
Bo smiled and closed his eyes. Luke looked at him concernedly.
"You okay?" Luke asked.
"I am just tired." Bo said.
"I'll go find a doctor." Luke said, standing
up from the chair.
"Thanks." Bo said, his voice sounded sleepy.
Luke left the room to find a doctor. It took him about five minutes
to find a doctor and they went to Bo's room. The doctor checked Bo over,
saying they'd run some tests in the morning to determine the extent of
the injury. He removed the oxygen, but left the heart monitor and the IV.
Luke sat back down on the chair next to Bo's
bed.
"I'll call Uncle Jesse and Daisy first thing
in the morning, I don't want to scare them with a late night call." Luke
said.
"Good idea." Bo said.
"I am glad that you woke Bo. You had us all
worried sick." Bo said.
"Sorry didn't mean to worry all of you." Bo
said.
Luke smiled and gave a small laugh. "You don't have to say sorry for
that."
"What time is it?" Bo asked.
"About quarter after two." Luke said. "Why?"
"Just wondering is all." Bo said.
"Maybe you should try to get some sleep."
Luke said.
"I guess." Bo said. "You aren't leaving now
are you?"
"No, I ain't going anywhere." Luke said.
Bo smiled slightly. "Good. I don't want to go to sleep yet. I just
want to talk for a while."
"Okay, that's fine." Luke said.
They spent the rest of the morning talking.
Bo almost fell asleep a couple times, but fought the urge to sleep off,
he just really wanted to talk to Luke. They talked for hours just like
they always had, about everything and about nothing at all. Luke saw that
Jesse was right the fight had no effect on their friendship that was just
as strong as ever. At around five Luke called the farm, from the phone
by Bo's bed.
Jesse answered the phone. "Hello."
"Uncle Jesse, guess who finally woke up?"
Luke questioned jokingly.
Jesse smiled. "Really, when?"
"Around two this morning." Luke said.
"How is he?" Jesse asked.
"Why don't you ask him yourself." Luke said
handing the phone over to Bo.
"Hey Uncle Jesse." Bo said.
Jesse felt a wave of relief sweep over his entire body, when he heard
Bo's voice. "How are you doing Bo?"
"I feel about like it is the morning after
the night before." Bo said jokingly. "Other then that I am fine."
"I am glad to heard that. Daisy and me will
be right there." Jesse said.
"Okay. See you soon." Bo said, and handed
Luke the phone to hang it up.
Daisy was just walking into the room as Jesse was hanging up,
she noticed that he was smiling, and his eyes were sparkling with joy.
"Who was that?"Daisy asked.
"Luke called to tell us that Bo woke up."
Jesse said.
Daisy smiled. "That is so great."
"Bo is doing just fine. I talked to him for
a minute or two. I told him that we'd be right there." Jesse said.
They headed out and got into the pickup truck and sped to the hospital.
Bo smiled as he saw them walk in. Daisy rushed
over and gave Bo a big hug. Bo returned her hug, ignoring the pull of the
IV as he moved his hand. Daisy stepped back and smiled down at younger
cousin.
"How are you feeling?" Daisy asked.
"I feel just fine." Bo said.
Jesse came over and gave Bo a big hug, which Bo returned.
"It is about time you woke up." Jesse said.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to over sleep." Bo said.
Jesse smiled. "I'll let you get away with it this time just don't ever
do it again."
"Yes sir." Bo said.
They sat around for a few hours just talking.
At around noon Jesse and Daisy decided to go down to the cafeteria to get
something to eat. Bo was starting to fall sleep, even though he tried desperately
not to. They were just about to leave when Bo stopped them.
"I want you to know before you go how much
I love all of you." Bo said.
Jesse looked at him curiously wondering why Bo was bringing that up
now. "We all love you to Bo."
"Yeah." Daisy and Luke said at the same time.
"Why are you bringing that up now?" Jesse
asked. "You are acting like you are never going to see us again."
Bo shrugged. "I guess I am just worried that if I go to sleep I won't
wake up again."
"Don't worry about it Bo, you'll be fine."
Jesse said.
"Yeah, I guess your right." Bo said.
Jesse and Daisy then left the room leaving Bo and Luke alone in the
room. Bo turned slightly so that he was facing Luke.
"Luke just in case I don't wake up again there
is something I want you to know." Bo said.
"What's that?" Luke asked.
"I am not mad at you at all so don't blame
yourself. I know that you do, but it is not your fault. It was an accident.
You are still my best friend. I want you to know that I have always thought
of you more as an older brother then a cousin." Bo said.
Luke smiled. "You have always been like a little brother to me."
Bo smiled. "I am glad to hear that. I just wanted to be sure you knew
. . . in case I don't wake up. I am kind of afraid that if I do go to sleep
I will never wake up again."
"You will Bo, you are too stubborn not to."
Luke said jokingly, though he noticed that Bo didn't sem to find that at
all funny. "I didn't mean that to be nasty I just meant . . ." Luke
started to explain, but Bo cut him off.
"I know I am just scared to allow myself to
fall asleep." Bo said.
"You can't stay awake the rest of your life
you have to go to sleep sooner or later." Luke said.
"I know. I wish I could stay awake forever.
I know I can't though." Bo said, closing his eyes, sleep becoming harder
to fight, a few moments later he was asleep.
Luke walked over to the window and looked
out. The weather didn't seem to reflect the good mood that the Dukes were
in. The sky was filled with dark, threatening clouds, it looked like it
was going to rain any second. Suddenly a high pitched beeping sound filled
the room. Luke spun and noticed Bo's heart machine, the line that had been
beating steadily to show the beat of Bo's heart, had stopped. Luke paled.
"Bo." Luke said, his voice barely above a
whisper he couldn't believe what was happening, he refused to believe that
Bo's heart had stopped.
He could hear the words Code Blue over the speaker but tried to block
them from his mind. He slowly started to walk towards the bed, when a doctor
and two nurses rushed in with a crash cart.
"You're going to have to leave the room."
one of the nurses said ushering Luke from the room, as the other two started
to try to get Bo's heart beating again.
Luke stood in the hallway with a blank stare. Jesse and Daisy were
coming back up to Bo's room and rushed over to Luke.
"What's wrong Luke?" Jesse asked.
Luke looked at them, his eyes were filled with worry and fear. "Bo's
heart . . . stopped."
"Oh my god." Jesse said.
"They told me I had to leave the room." Luke
said, his voice was flat.
Neither Jesse nor Daisy knew what to say. They were all filled with
worry. They thought about how Bo was afraid to go to sleep, it was as though
he knew he his heart would stop if he did. The minutes that passed seemed
like hours. Finally the doctor and nurses came out of the room. The nurses
took the crash cart away. The doctor looked sympathetic.
"How is he?" Jesse asked, his voice fraught
with worry.
The doctor sighed and shook his head. "I am sorry."
Daisy stared at him, his meaning not sinking in. "What do you mean?"
"We tried to get his heart started again,
but his body had just suffered so much damage, that we just couldn't get
it going again." the doctor said. "It is actually surprising that he ever
woke up from the comma. There was so much damage and I don't see how he
even woke up."
"He wanted things in his life to be settled.
He wanted to say goodbye." Luke mumbled softly, tears starting to streak
his cheeks.
Jesse knew that Luke was right. Bo had woke up to let Luke know he
wasn't angry at him and didn't blame him for what happened. He wanted to
tell his family one last time how much he loved them.
The Dukes went into Bo's room to say goodbye.
They stood around the bed looking down at Bo. Bo's skin was pale white,
and his lips had a slight blue tinge.
"He was right. He didn't want to go to sleep.
We all told him not to worry and go to sleep. He somehow knew that he was
going to die." Luke said.
Jesse put an arm around him. "Yes he did, he woke up just to make things
right and to say goodbye."
"I should have kept him awake longer." Luke
said.
"I doubt it would've matter. He couldn't stay
awake forever. I think either way he would've passed on." Jesse said, not
bothering to hide his own tears.
"It isn't fair." Daisy said, tears streaking
her cheeks, she leaned against Jesse, how held comfortingly.
"Life isn't always fair. We just have to believe
that Bo is in a better place and wherever he is he is happy." Jesse said,
he knew that he had to be brave for Luke and Daisy's sake.
Jesse and Daisy couldn't stand to stay in the room any longer and left.
Luke stayed for a moment. Luke looked down at Bo's still form. Tears steadily
streaked his cheeks, and his whole body slightly trembled. He brushed back
a lock of Bo's blonde hair, that had fallen across his eyes.
"I already miss you." Luke said, his voice
was shaky and Luke wasn't sure if he could say anything else, he took a
deep breath and slowly released. "I really don't know what I am going to
do with you around. I still feel responsible for this, even though I know
you don't want me blaming myself . . . I can't help it."
Luke stood silently for a minute and sighed. "I will not forget you
ever, you always have been and always will be my best friend."
Luke then turned and left the room to join Jesse and Daisy.
The three of them went out and got into the
truck and headed home, a light rain falling the whole time. The old house
seemed empty and quiet knowing that Bo would never return. a dark cloud,
bigger then any storm cloud in the sky seemed to hang over them. Jesse
spent the rest of the afternoon making funeral arrangements. It nearly
tore his heart in two having to do it, but knew there was nobody else that
could. It didn't seem fair to any of them that Bo had to die so young.
Bo was the youngest of the Dukes and it was really hard for them to deal
the fact he died first. As people in Hazzard found out about Bo's death,
they called the Dukes to offer their sympathy and condolences. All of them
saying it was hard to believe that Bo was gone and that he was too young
to have died so suddenly.
The funeral was the next day, the rain still
hadn't stopped, it only threatened to storm worse. The sound of thunder
could be heard rumbling over heard, even in the church. To the Dukes it
seems surreal. Luke sat staring at the casket in the front of the room.
He tried not to think too much about what was happening, but it was all
he could think about. The sermon seemed to cut like a knife through his
heart. Luke wanted to say some last words in remembrance of Bo. He stood
up slowly and approached the front. He paused by the casket and looked
at Bo. Luke fought back the tears that burned in his eyes, and tried to
hide that he was trembling.
"Bo . . . Bo was the best friend anyone could
ever have. He was kind and caring. He was the kind of friend that was always
there when you needed him . . . he was a true friend. He was my best friend
. . . I loved him as though he was my brother. He wasn't the kind of person
to be judgemental or hold things against anyone. He was very forgiven.
He loved every minute of his life and always made the most of it . . ."
Luke's voice was shaking, and he trailed off as tears started to streak
his cheeks.
Luke wanted to say more but found that he couldn't. He just walked
back to his seat. Jesse gave him a comforting hug.
They moved outside, to the graveyard. a light
rain was still falling. None of the Dukes bothered to stand under an umbrella,
they didn't even notice the rain at all. The only thing that stood out
in their minds was that Bo was truly gone, Bo was dead. They watched with
heavy hearts as Bo's casket was lowered into the cold, wet ground.
Daisy stepped forward and tossed a red rose into the grave, it hit the
coffin with a silent thud. Luke was the next to toss in a rose followed
by Jesse.
"Ashes to ashes . . . dust into dust." the
preacher said as he tossed the dirt down onto Bo's coffin.
None of the Dukes bothered to hide their tears as the grave was slowly
filled in with dirt. Jesse and Daisy left right away, not able to stand
the pain any longer. Luke remained standing in front of Bo's tombstone,
staring at it with blank eyes. He remained that way until nine that night
when Jesse finally came and got him, taking him back to the farm.
Luke lay awake in the room that he and Bo had shared their whole
lives. He stared into the darkness, thinking soon he would have to pack
away all of Bo's things that were in the room, but knew it would be a while
until he could completely let go. He knew though that he would never let
go of Bo's memory.
