SYNOPSIS
This Garry Moore variety series ran
very successfully for six seasons in the lat 1950's and early 1960's. Among
other things, it made a star out of Carol Burnett, brought back Allen Funt's
Candid Camera (as a regular feature), and showcased many fine musical and
comedic talents. And then there was, of course, the friendly humor of the
bow-tied, crew-cut Moore himself. From 1958 to 1963, the highlight of the show
was "That Wonderful Year," consisting of film clips, comedy sketches, and
production numbers based on the events and styles of a given year. This often
filled from one-third to one-half of the show.
The Garry Moore Show left
the air in 1964, not because of low ratings but because Garry wanted to get away
from the weekly grind and have some time to relax. After two years of
well-earned rest (he had begun on network radio in 1939 and had been on
television continuously since 1950) Garry returned in the fall of 1966 as host
of a program featuring Durward Kirby and a rotating cast of comedians and
guests. This was short-lived, however (partially due to the withering
competition of Bonanza), and thereafter Garry was known primarily as a
daytime TV personality.
