BACKGROUND

"The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre 2000", is the third TVB reproduction of Jin Yong's novel. The first production was filmed in 1978 starring Adam Cheung as Cheung Mo Kei, Wong Ming Hin as Jiu Mun, Chiu Ngar Chi as Chow Chi Yek and Idy Chan as Siu Yee. The 80's version starred Tony Leung as Cheung Mo Kei, Kitty Lai as Jiu Mun, Sheren Tang as Chow Chi Yek, Maggie Siu as Siu Yee, Simon Tam as Cheung Tu San, and Dodo Cheng as Yan So So. Of all the three series, the 80's version was actually truer to the novel. The cast for this particular series features 80's veteran actor Lawerence Ng in the role of the young Cheung Mo Kei. Gigi Lai takes on the role of Mongolian Princess, Jiu Mun. Former Miss HK, Charmaine Sheh, takes the role of Chow Chi Yek. Cherie Chan takes on the role of Chu Yee. Eddie Cheung, Joyce Tang, Damian Lau and Mei Suet rounds out the cast.

"The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre", completes Jin Yong's trilogy of love stories, which also included "The Legend of the Condor Heroes", and "The Return of the Condor Heroes". The story itself takes place about 90 years after "The Return of the Condor Heroes". By this time the Mongolian forces led by Genghis Khan's grandson, Kublai Khan has conquered China and established the Yuan Dynasty. Under Mongol rule the Han people suffered and many were tortured to death. Kwok Jing, Wong Yung, and Kwok Po Lo have all died defending thier nation. Before thier death they melted the "Iron Sword", which once belonged to Kim Mo Duk Ku Kau Pai and created the Dragon Sabre and the Heaven Sword. The sceret about how the two weapons would allow one person to rule the world is simple as the Heaven Sword contains a short form of the kung fu manual, Gow Yum Jan King, whilst the Dragon Sabre contained General Ngowk Fei's famous warbook. The story is formed around the journey of Kwok Seung, who traveled around to look for Yeung Gor. In the process she gets Cheung Sam Fung kicked out of Shaolin, who then goes on to form his own kung fu school of Mo Dong. Kwok Seung would form her own school of Ngor Mei, passing down the sceret of the Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre to each generation of leaders.
