Episode 7...Beginning of a Journey....Written by Michelle Murray.
L6: As midday approached Kerryn Walker wandered around the empty room, that formerly housed the Protected Preternatural animals and two small girls. Her mind was in a daze, as if she was blotting out the reality she would never look after any of them again; she would never see them again or hear their cheery voices. The two bulbs were gone as well, safely tucked away on the vessel that would take them across the ocean to Lane Hunter's Prison. The silent room was alien to her and she didn't welcome it. Kerryn began sighing softly, being unable to cease. Lane Torrens heard her and entered the room. He studied her for a few moments impassively; still watching as her sighs became moans of untold mental agony. Kerryn walked slowly around each bed, the cats, dogs and girls once slept in. Turning around she looked directly at Torrens, or so it seemed to him. In fact, Kerryn looked through him, as if he wasn't there.
"They're really gone...They're....gone" she spoke without realising it. Ferevently hoping it was just a terrible dream, Kerryn stared around the room, telling herself they would be here like always and she would be laughing at Freddy J's pranks.
Torrens: "Yes, they're gone!"
His voice startled her and she appeared to regain some awareness. Kerryn approached him slowly, for she sensed he wasn't in a pleasant mood. She looked into the handsome officers glittering eyes; his mouth was set in a cruel thin line, and his facial expression was sharpened.
Kerryn: (nervously)"I only meant that I'll miss them"
Torrens: "So, they'll get over it, and you'd better get over it! To keep what little of a brain you have occupied you can help Ladd re-store those extra bulbs. Now move!!!" Her green eyes widened in surpirse and dismay. Kerryn had never seen him in this state of mind before and there came a terrible urgency to get out of his way. Another realisation dawned on her as Lane Torrens stood blocking her path. He meant to torture her, and his intention was revealed by an electronic stun device he swiftly revealed with an outstretched right hand.
Kerryn: "W..What have I done?" she stammered "Surely you can't think Taryn's accident is my fault"
Torrens: "Of course it's not your fault, but I want you to know here and now that you won't have those animals to distract you now. I'll expect nothing short of loyalty and obedience from you. Unquestioning obedience, do you understand?"
Kerryn: "..but I've always been obe-"
Torrens: "DO YOU UNDERSTAND!?" He suddenly lunged forward and seized her arm, delivering a blow to her face with his open hand at the same time. "I'll ask you again, Walker. Do you understand?"
Kerryn: "Yes, I understand - sir!"
Torrens still had her in a stranglehold "I don't like the way you said that"
With a strength that surprised even her, Kerryn tore herself away unable to conceal the first stirrings of anger towards him.
Kerryn: "If you're going to kill me, kill me. I've had more than enough of your sadistic games"
Lane Torrens began to laugh at her, but there was no warmth in the laugh. The laughter ceased and his expression change to one of ferocity. Torrens backhanded her and Kerryn found herslef on the floor.
Torrens: "Do you honestly think that I, a Chief Officer of this Prison, was really interested in a common slut like you. Did you believe I cared about you? You're nothing but a worthless piece of garbage! Oh you were very good; the performances you gave; but now you've served your purpose as a nanny and as my companion" he continued, savouring her distress "You can consider yourself finished with me, but I'll tell you what I'll do. Rather than throw you into the general population I'll offer you to Officer Fyfe"
Kerryn: "Officer Fyfe?"
Torrens: (grinning) "Yes, Officer Fyfe. The one who wished to know your name when my colleagues punished you. Perhaps you can win his affection" Despite what Torrens was inflicting on her now, she still harboured some feeling for him; as a matter of fact her feelings for Torrens were deepening and she truly believed he did love her. She wanted to be with the Lane Torrens who made love to her two nights ago; not this cruel mysoginistic stranger. Slowly she raised her eyes to his and searched them for some kind of tenderness. Torrens stood above smirking down at her. Kerryn began to pleade with him.
Kerryn: "It's true...I...thought you did care for me" she paused, strugggling to compose herself then spoke in a hushed voice, "and I...cared for you..I'm...I'm falling in love with you. You know I was innocent when those men violated me" she backed away when he advanced menacingly on her again "you saw my injuries! Please! Please!" Kerryn shielded her face with both her arms anticipating another barrage of blows which thankfully never came.
Torrens pondered on this last point and wondered with horror why he was treating Kerryn Walker like this; a woman he was attracted to; but he couldn't possibly back away now. He convinced himself it was a matter of discipline and it had to carried through. Officer Fyfe was quite taken with her, and although he joined in the rape, Fyfe expressed remorse afterwards. Torrens realised he would take care of Kerryn and she would enjoy the priveliged position of companion to a Senior Officer. Breathing deeply, Lane squatted so as he was eye level to her; the impact weapon across his knee.
Torrens: "Mr. Fyfe is quite taken by you. He always enquires about your health every time he and I meet; not only that; he wants to know what food you like, what tastes in music; everything about you. The way I see it you've got two choices, Kerryn. Either accept Mr. Fyfes generous offer; or rot, as Glynis Ladd's going to rot, in the General Population", he stood, "It's your choice. Now give me an answer" Kerryn could never go back to the hell of General Population, not now that she was so accustomed to living in very comfortable conditions. She was curious about this other man; perhaps she could even manipulate him into giving her his love.
Kerryn: "Would you ask Mr. Fyfe? Please tell him I will be loyal and obedient; tell him I'll do anything for him; anything at all"
Torrens: "Very well. I'll tell him straight away. Meanwhile, you see to those bulbs"
Kerryn offered no resistance as Torrens assisted her to stand. Indicating she lead, Torrens strode behind her to the open doorway. From there, they parted; Torrens sought out Len Fyfe, and Kerryn went to store the surplus pneumatic bulbs away.
The sun shone, bathing the entire perimeter of Leviticus 6 in it's hot rays. Kerryn and Glynis were uncomfortably hot as each woman battled stairways holding two large bulbs each. Their tubes were wrapped around the womens bodies so as to prevent either falling and Kerryn felt like she was being roasted alive.
Kerryn: "Glyn...Lane Torrens is giving me to Mr. Fyfe, and you...you...oohh" she started crying and could not stop. Glynis frowned puzzled, it was obvious Kerryn had some very bad news for her. She kindly lead Kerryn to the top tier and they stopped while Kerryn spoke again.
Kerryn: "I knew this would happen when the animals went. Glyn, they're sending you back to General Population. I'm so sorry!"
Glyn: "Well I'll live, I know pretty much what to expect", Glyn kept her tone deliberately light as to not alarm her friend further. She did know what to expect; and it was extremely unpleasant.
OFFICER FYFE'S QUARTERS: Lane Torrens paid a visit to Len Fyfe as promised. The setup in Fyfes unit was similar to Torrens but with one difference. Because Fyfe was senior to Torrens there was an access phone directly to the Warden, for Fyfe was one of his trusted advisors. Torrens sat comfortably on one of the lounges in the mammoth living area opposite Fyfe. The air conditioning operated at full capacity again, on this unseasoably hot March day. Fyfe was talking to Torrens.
Fyfe: "that's what's wrong with you young men today, you get bored too quickly.", he regarded his subordinate pensively for a moment "It seems you tired of this girl rather soon. Why's that?"
Torrens shrugged nonchalantly "I've lost interest in her as a companion. She was there to mind the Protectorates mainly"
Fyfe: (leering)"What's her body like?"
Torrens: "I'm surprised you don't remember her, sir. Kerryn Walker, the one Sullivan and the others mistook for a prostitute."
Len Fyfes face brightened with recollection. He recalled a black cat with Kerryn when he and the others came upon her. But, if Torrens tired of her so easily, would it really be worth keeping her if she wasn't going to satisfy him. When it came to carnal matters Len Fyfe was an extremely demanding man. This was a factor that Lane Torrens had overlooked. If Fyfe rejected Kerryn; then she would be condemned to the General Population and Torrens discovered, possibly too late, that he felt as deeply for her and she had for him. Another problem was Len Fyfe's mood when Torrens first entered; it wasn't good. He was angry about something, but Torrens had no idea what it may be.
Fyfe: "I don't want used goods, Torrens. The little whore can rot in General as far as I'm concerned!"
Torrens: "Please, Mr. Fyfe", he pleaded "at least meet her again and give her a chance to prove herself. She is very good company and..." Torrens trailed off regretting the earlier incident with Kerryn. Damn his psychotic turns!
Fyfe: "You really care for her, don't you. Otherwise why would you be pleading on her behalf?"
Lane Torrens stood, sensing his welcome was being worn out; Len Fyfe stood at the same time. When Fyfe drew near, the two men looked at each other intently.
Torrens: "You're right. I am fond of her. You will be too"
Fyfe: "We'll see, Torrens. Have her report to me after her assignment with the pneumatics", Lane Torrens found himself hastily ushered out of the Senior Advisors unit.
IG1: Governor Lane Hunter and his staff were thrown into a complete tailspin upon being advised of the Protectorates impending arrival. At 12:30pm the animals and girls were more or less settled in for their overnight sojourn. The Gang, as they now preferred to be called, were split up over IG1 at this moment. Little Garfield D, who fancied himself as a computer whiz stood behind Sharon Cameron's desk watching her as she typed official memorandums on the word processor. Sharon didn't seem to mind, in fact she chatted away to the cat. Lane Hunter's head appeared from his office enquiringly.
Sharon: "I'm just about to print the memo now, Mr. Hunter"
Lane: "No hurry, Mrs. Cameron.", he directed his gaze to Garfield "Don't you bother Mrs. Cameron now". This was said in a light tone.
Sharon embraced the cat on her way to the printer "He's not bothering me at all. Garfield's my little helper, aren't you, dear"
Garfield: "Yes, Mrs. Cameron"
This sudden diversion was a welcome relief to Lane Hunter. It delayed him telling Rita Connors of Ernest Craven's 'resurrection', for want of a better term. His thoughts turned to Neil Luxmoore who possessed some sort of decency by warning him. Someone else must have aided Craven, most probably Terry Walters. The Bastard! Sooner or later Lane would have to tell Rita. Perhaps tonight, perhaps next week, or maybe just before The Lord came to Judge All.
Other members of The Gang occupied their time on the shore of IG1. Felix M, Trinkle, Sylvester and Nermal were still unsettled after the sudden move. The women of IG1 watched over them protectively. Scooby and the others checked out the gym. Felix J. fell in love with the cardio-bike. As the afternoon drew on, storm clouds gathered on the horizon. There was a general consenus to join the older cats and dogs in the gym (which was utilised by staff and inmates. Lane Hunter must have been the most Liberal Prison Governor in Australian history) Little Trinkle became re-acquainted with Bea. They were greeted with loud dance music and a row of cats on the cardio-bikes; the dogs took over the treadmills.
Shadow: (on one treadmill) "Hey, where's Garfield?"
Felix J: "Probably hacking into our Defence computer system"
This was greeted by boisterous laughter.
Rita: "Wish he could shut down Walters computers" Sandy Edwards strolled behind each of the cats on the bikes Felix J, Sassy, Desiree and Freddy J. A pair of white ears were bobbing up and down at one lane behind the bikes. Little Trinkle was on the Stair-Climber. It was decided by Sandy that she would collect little Garfield and bring him to the gym before he was able to cause mayhem in Mrs. Camerons office. The remainder of the animals surrounded the 6 already on the bikes and treadmills. Bea supervised Trinkle whilist Kath kept the others company. The ones on the machines were allowed 10 minutes, then Felix J, Freddy J, Sassy and Desiree would let Sylvester, Nermal, Callisto and Felix M onto the bikes; Scooby and Shadow would let Delilah and Freddy M on the treadmills.
In the Governors reception area, Garfield sat at the computer, although he was playing Freecell and not causing havoc when Sandy Edwards appeared. Sharon Cameron stood at the photocopier, glancing as Sandy entered.
Sharon: "Hullo, Sandy"
Sandy: "G'day, Mrs. C. I've come to collect Garfield", she approached the cat who was in deep concentration of the game. "Hiya! Garfield, isn't it?"
Garfield gazed up at the lady who was dressed in a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. She was a pretty lady with short dark hair and a friendly face.
Garfield: "Hi. Who're you?"
Sandy: "My name's Sandy and we're all at the gym wondering where you are. A little bird tells me you're a computer genius" The smiling animal allowed himself to be lifted into Sandy Edwards arms. On the journey to the gym, Sandy told Garfield of the equipment and that there would be a competition later to see who could go the furthest distance on the cardio-bikes within 10 minutes. The observations about Garfield D. being a computer weren't far off the mark. The night before the party the enterprising little cat woke up the the very early hours; and sitting at the computer, created plastic effigies of The Gang as presents for Kerryn and Glyn. When this task was completed he put the dolls into two boxes, one for Kerryn; the other for Glyn.
L6: After the incident with CB2, Taryn went in search of Neil Luxmoore and found him - she also found Ernest Craven, most likely the person responsible for the plummeting air-bulb. Craven had some revelations of his own, revelations that would change circumstances on IG1 forever. It no longer mattered to Craven whether Neil warned Hunter or not. IG1 had a new Actng Governor - Neil Luxmoore; Lane Hunter would take Leave of Absence. Ernest Craven had Taryn Carlton for insurance to make certain Neil did as he was told. Luxmoore held the trembling Taryn in his arms while Craven gloated.
Craven: "...after all, isn't this what you've always wanted. The Governorship, well now you've got it and Lane Hunter's been taken care of"
Neil: "I didn't want it..not like this. Hunter'll think I've double-crossed him!"
Craven: "Since when did Hunter's feelings concern you! Personally, I'd rather have him killed, but to show I'm not an entirely unreasonable man, I'm agreeing to your suggestion that he take some leave.", Craven laughed "A romantic holiday" Taryn sunk against Neil's shoulder. The cats and dogs would be at IG1 by now quite unaware of the calamity about to hit them. Craven suddnely lunged at the pair and pulled Taryn roughly away from Neil's side; Neil didn't have enough time to react and watched helplessly as Craven held a scalpel at Taryn's throat.
Neil: "You hurt her and I swear I'll send you right back to Hell!"
Ernest Craven's face contorted with rage, he slashed Taryn's cheek with the scalpel. Her scream pierced Neil one hundred times over.
Craven: "Next time, it'll be her throat, Luxmoore so move it", waving the weapon menacingly, Craven made his way over to Luxmoore and shoved him roughly through the door.
ABANDONED CEMETERY: Everywhere, screams and wails cut through the still summer air as soldiers raced through the abandoned graveyard destory a terrible alien prescence. Fortunately the military possessed state of the art search technology which enabled them to differentiate between enemy forces and trapped victims. Numan Downly had one such device, the size of a pocket television attached to his flak jacket. The device showed three coloured dots. Red: the enemy targets. Green: Any victim trapped, and Blue: other soldiers like himself. The 'aliens' the military were hunting were in fact, vampires, who had terrorised towns nearby the cemetery. The place was a charnel house in every sense of the word, at this moment; bodies lay everywhere in various states of decay; and the stench permeated the soldiers clothing; or so it seemed to Numan. He and a few other soldiers advanced on a crypt well in the cemetery. Corporal Peach, and a man called Bull ran close behind him. On the inside a hybrid alien was trapped. She was a cross between a simian and a cat, her eyes were wide and pain filled and her mouth was downturned and she screamed for help. The green alien scampered on four legs on the dirt floor of the crypt, letting herself be picked up by one of the soldiers. The two that were behind Numan, who held the female hybrid tenderly, drew up beside him and fired. The little alien buried her head into Numan's chest and bayed in misery. One of the vampires jumped Numan and he bravely countered the attack, still able to remain upright with Lacey, the alien, clutching him with her paws. Arm whipping round Numan drew one of his weapons and blasted the enemy creature to shreds. Lacey climbed Numan's shoulder perching herself there, unfortunately Bull frightened her all the more by pointing his gun right in her face. The alien's face seemed to expand and she emitted a piercing shriek giving Numan one heck of an earache.
Numan wrenched the barrel of Bull's weapon skyward "YOU BLOODY IDIOT!"
Numan reached and brought Lacey to the front and cradled her as she trembled in his arms. Her eyes were raised to a confused Bull "It's OK, girl", Numan soothed her.
Bull: "How'd y' know it's a girl?"
Numan: "Cos I couldn't see a dick! That's why!!" Walking out into the air Numan left to confused and belligerent Special Forces soldiers. He heard Peach utter various obscenities but ignored them. Their work was almost complete. Numan was met by 'Brick' a soldier in his own unit. Brick was 6 feet tall with crew cut blonde hair and a rugged complexion. His physique was that of a WWF wrestler and his arms were very meaty indeed. Lacey, poked her head from Numan's chest and gazedwide eyed at the man with the scar running down the left side of his face. Numan's hands felt sticky with the female alien's menstraul blood all over them and it provided some explanation as to Lacey's stomach cramps. God knew how long this poor kid had been trapped with those abominations. Brick patted Lacey's green head affectionately.
Numan: "C'mon, babe, lets get you patched up" he crooned walking purposefully toward a parked jeep. Reaching the jeep, Numan placed Lacey gently on the drivers seat before searching for a make-shift napkin in the supplies from the jeeps back. Finding a soft tea-towel, sighing, he decided this would have to suffice as a napkin for the moment. Climbing in beside her, Numan picked her up and gently placed the tea-towel around her underside and bringing it up on her back, fastened the ends with a safety pin.
"Looks like you're an addition to The Protectorates, my girl" Lacey gazed affectionately, almost lovingly up at the human male.
IG1: In the gym, the noise neared decibels of over one hundred as the Protectorates cheered the cats on the bikes. Felix J was in the lead at the five minute mark, but Freddy M was catching up. Sassy and Desiree were head to head. Freddy J and Trinkle watched the proceedings from the Stair-Climber. They were so distracted by the competition that no-one, not even the women noticed Lane Hunter enter with Neil Luxmoore, Taryn Carlton and Ernest Craven behind him. Lane stood silently watching them, careful to keep his emotions in check. Behind him, an ashen faced Neil Luxmoore comforted Taryn, who now sported a bandage, hastily applied by Neil. The first to spot them was, of course Trinkle. Jumping from the Stair-Climber he rushed into Taryn's arms. Gradually the noise subsided until all that was heard was the noise of the cardio-bikes shutting down. Nobody spoke in the almost unbearable silence. The animals sensed danger and became unsettled.
Lane: "I have an announcement. As of now, Officer Luxmoore is now the Acting Governor. This is a Departmental Directive. I am to take indefinite Leave Of Absence"
The people started mumbling among themselves; some of the smaller animals started crying. A scream rang out. Then a second scream; this one more piercing and urgent. It happened in an instant, before any of the humans could react. Craven seized Trinkle; gripping his arms he left the cat suspended in mid air. Taryn's attempts to retrieve Trinkle proved futile.
Craven: "If anyone does anything stupid", the grip tightened painfully on Trinkle's arms "every bone in his arms will be broken!" Taryn had to be restrained for Trinkle's safety, therefore Neil and Lane held her. The animals came closer to Trinkle who dangled in the air crying for help.
Craven: "Where's Connors?", his eyes scanned the room. Rita came within sight of him.
Rita: "If you wanna talk to me, let the cat go!"
More threats followed "Hurt that cat and I'll send you back to Hell, Craven". The threat did not have the desired effect. Craven grabbed Trinkle's neck and began squeezing; thats when Taryn broke free with superhuman strength and rescued her little cat. Ernest Craven's mouth was frozen in an O of surprise as he was forced back. In the melee Trinkle scrambled to the safety of The Gang; Felix J and Scooby surged forward to aid Taryn to safety whilist Lane and Neil dealt with Craven as best they could. Neil Luxmoore drew back a closed fist following through with a heavy blow to Craven's face; Hunter followed through with a swift kick to the mans stomach. In the background Taryn cradled Trinkle and The Gang watched in disbelief the voilence unfolding. Felix M sobbed uncontrollably and Lisa Simpson did her best to comfort him. Finally Kath, Chrissie and Bea stepped in and hauled Hunter and Luxmoore off Craven, who now sported a bruised and bloody face.
"I hope none of you, buffoons are plannin' to sell tickets!!", Hunter stood shamefaced in the stony face of Bea Smith, but Neil Luxmoore was defiant. The J brothers and the four dogs gazed at Craven with open mouths; horrified and fascinated - Ernest Cravens bruises were disappearing before their very eyes.
ATOMIC VILLAGE IN RURAL VICTORIA: Approximately thirty-five miles north-west of Geelong there stood an Atomic Village. So called due to a small community of people setting up residence fifteen months after a nuclear accident. Small whitebrick houses dotted the area, and streets were created, but these streets did not have names; rather they were numeric. In the centre of this small town there stood a large reinforced structure of brick and glass; this was known as the Governing House. It was here that a Military Force, known as The High Templars oversaw everyday life. People were left in peace, and all were priveliged; with every single house consisting of a VCR, TV, Sound System of their choice and at least one of every whitegood at their disposal. Money also was no problem, everyone who could work, worked; but those who couldn't were 'put to rest' by the Templars. A beautiful young girl walked these well ordered streets at this time clothed from head to toe. She had been crying not so long ago and now was apprenshive as she searched for Linden Warhurst, the Deputy Leader of the Templars. Serena Annatova had moved into a vacant unit the day before yesterday. Her dark brown shoulder length hair hung lusciously loose around her unblemished face; her cheekbones were medium and her lips were sensual. Her eyes told a million stories; true tales of pain and terror that were reflected in their brown depths. Serena stood at 5 ft 7 inches tall and wa slender and had at least known tenderness of a man - that man was Linden Warhurst. Serena needed him now more than she ever had. From her native country in a broken Eastern Europe, Serena had escaped with all her savings and the few possessions she could afford to take with her. She had a job arranged in the Village as a Receptionist to start in the next two days. Serena met Tessa End, the Head Receptionist who was warm and friendly. It was by acident that Serena discovered Warhurst's presence while Tessa was giving her a tour of the GOvernment Building. Linden was spotted walking alongside an older man who Tessa informed her was The Leader. Tessa's face, had paled, Serena noted with alarm. Tessa gave no indication as to why she reacted so strongly but warned Serena to be sweetness itself in Venolan's presence.
With her employment starting in two days, Serena, a gentle natured girl of twenty-two had ample time to sort things out and look around her new home. It also gave her the chance to contact Linden which she now intended to do, while she had the courage. Approaching a public telephone, Serena took out her identity card in readiness to make the call. Nervously the girl dialled, admonishing herself for her foolishness. This man loves you, she told herself. Why wouldn't he want to speak to her? She hadn't forgotten his frequent phone calls, E-Mails and hand-written letters. About a month or so ago all communication between them had ceased, due to the trouble in Serena's country. Then came the fateful night when the Secret Police burst into Serena's family home and took her and her parents to Headquarters. It was there, that her parents were tortured to death and she herself was repeatedly raped, tortured and discarded in the streets the next morning. After burying her family, Serena's thoughts turned to Linden, and she vowed to re-unite with him.
Linden Warhurst was in conference in his office with the leader Venolan. Warhurst's male personal assistant fielded such calls and relayed messages to him. It was the call from Serena, that among others, Linden's assistant would field.
Serena felt tears brimming in her eyes "...please, let me speak with him, I've come a long way"
The assistant sighed; although he was very sympathetic to Serena, Warhurst's instructions were always explicit, and a dim view was taken of any deviation from the rules. However this was an exception. Putting Serena on hold, the assistant knocked gingerly on the closed door and entered.
"I'm sorry to disturb you gentlemen but a very distressed young lady wanting to speak with Mr. Warhurst on the phone.", a lump came to the PA's throat as he continued "she says you know her. I wouldn't have bothered you except - her name is Serena"
Linden and Venolan exchanged glances. Warhurst knew the identity of the caller and appealed wordlessly to Venolan. The older man glared at him. The answer was no.
Linden: "Take a message. Get Serena's contact number and inform her I will contact her ASAP"
PA: "Yes, Mr. Warhurst." The man acknowledged his superiors and left the room poste haste.
"Hello, Miss Annatova, Mr. Warhurst sends his regrets but he cannot speak with you at the moment; however he has asked that you leave your home contact number as he intends to contact you directly"
On the other end of the line, a smile came to Serena's face. She duly gave the PA her contact details and upon terminating the call hurried home to wait for Linden Warhurst's communication.
IG1: It was now quite clear The Protectorates could no longer remain on IG1 and still be safe. One of the first decisions Neil Luxmoore made as Acting Governor was that all the Protectorates sleep overnight in the Governors Quarters with Taryn and himself.....
