What is a webring and how does it work?
A Webring is a way to group sites of similar interest
together
in a "ring". Links on each page in the ring allow you
to move from
one site to the next, eventually traversing the entire
ring to end
up where you started.
How do the links on a typical Webring site work?
In essence, the links on each site in the ring provide
a means
for the Webring.org database to know what site the user
is
coming from, and where they want to go.(ie, next site,
prev
site, etc....) By having the proper information on each
site
(ring id, site id#) the database then checks to see which
site is
next in line, and most importantly, what ring. When the
user
clicks on one of these links, Webring.org will search
the database
for the proper information and then send the user to
the url of
the next site in the ring.
What's the difference between the "Ring" and "Queue"?
There are 2 separate databases created.
the actual "ring", and the "queue." The queue is the
place
where ALL sites go when they are first entered into the
ring
database. At that time the site will be issued a site
ID# and
listed in the queue. Then someone will go and visit the
site to see if
the ring code has been placed on the page, if all the
information on it is correct, then the site is added
to
the ring. When a site is in the queue it can't be accessed
from the ring
code. It must be moved into the ring to be used or viewed
Who can add sites into the ring?
For now, only the administrators can, but once the ring has grown, then other members will be authorized to add new ones. As long as they meet the set criteria, our older members will be able to add new ones.
How do I edit site information?
You can edit your site by following this link to webring org. Once there put your site # and your password into the appropriate boxes. The information will be stored by Webring.
