What homepage about Southern California would be complete without at least a little about the beaches? None, because the beach is such an essential part of living here. Southern California is famous for its incredible white sand beaches and amazing weather. But lets not forget that the entire state of California has a Pacific coastline and up and down the state there are hundreds of fantastic beaches. There's just something magical about feeling the warmth of the sun, the rhythm of the surf and the sand. For me one of the most relaxing things was to go watch the sunrise on the beach as a way of starting my day, I sure wish I could do that now!!

Most of the fun at the beaches is obviously in summer. The surfers will be there year around pretty much year around, but you don't need to be afraid of being overrun by by surfers, there is pretty much an informal separation of the beach into areas for surfing, sunbathing and everything else. When the weather warms you will see the beach come to life. Skaters all over the place, bicycles, all sorts of people. California beach volleyball is intense and a fair number of the members of the US Olympic volleyball team are originally from California.

The beaches are all different. To say that once you have seen one of them you have seen them all is simply not true. There are plenty of beaches and some are better than others for whatever you like. There are basically deserted beaches and the really crowded ones, surfing beaches, nudist beaches, everything. Anyone who has spent any real time on the beach knows what a pain a sunburn can be, so make sure to take precautions, especially if you are fair skinned. It's one thing to be paranoid about it, putting on extra oil every two minutes, it's another to be cavalier and not use any protection at all.

People watching at the beach is a lot of fun. I was always amused by some of the people you would see that spent the whole day with their metal detectors searching for treasure, you have to wonder how many have ever found anything at all. The locals have a live-and-let-live attitude about it all, so most anything you want to do is cool as long as you aren't bothering someone. For the truly adventurous you can go to see Venice Beach in summer, it is truly an experience you will never forget!

Surfer going for it!

I'm not a surfer but it was fun to watch them, especially on days when the waves were good. The Beach Boys introduced America and the world to all of this with songs like Surfin USA. Anyway, here for your pleasure are a few surfing links.

Sunsets on the beach are truly stunning. As the sun starts going down most people go home. I used to love to watch the sunset at the Huntington Beach Pier after a day at the beach. Won't you join me? Lets just take off our shoes and walk in the sand as the sun sets and feel the peace and serenity.
