Kualoa Airfield

Kualoa Airfield 1943

Nothing remains of this World War II airfield's runways.  It is possible to see the remnants of revetments along the shear cliffs of the Koolau Mountain Range.  Kualoa State Park and  Kualoa Ranch have absorbed most of the former runway but the Kaaawa coastal defenses which protected the field remain and are clearly visible today.  Very little information about the Kualoa Airfield can be found, only these few remaining pictures.  There is some evidence that Kualoa was a satellite field for units assigned to Bellows.  One story about Kualoa from a man who grew up in Hawaii says that the road to Kaaawa and the north shore crossed the airfield so the cars would have to wait whenever an airplane took off.

This photo clearly show the revetments used to protect aircraft from damage.
Revetments not only protect aircraft from bomb damage but from other aircraft which have caught fire or exploded during an attack.
